  1. Starting before then running concurrently with the events of Mr. Answer Man, this is Scott's perspective on the first three years of Shane and Ilya's growing relationship. You do not need to have read Mr. Answer Man to understand this (I hope!) but I recommend it.

Scott Hunter is 25 years old, Captain of the New York Admirals, and privately, achingly, gay. He meets Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov at the 2009 MLH draft day, and everyone involved immediately gets several wrong ideas. For the next three years, Scott has to navigate his place as a closeted gay man in the spotlight of major league hockey, while trying to protect an oblivious baby queer from an obviously straight Russian menace who can't seem to stay away.

  2. Three years isn't that long, really. It's long enough to get a Master's Degree in Art History. Long enough to build the foundations of a relationship that could last the rest of their lives. Long enough for a professional hockey player to figure out how to tell the world he's gay.

What happened between episode 3 and episode 5, with our sweet boys and all the people who helped them get there.

  3. This work explores the previously unseen three and a half years in the lives and the relationship of characters Scott Hunter and Kip Grady from Season 1 of the Heated Rivalry television series created by Jacob Tierney. It begins where Episode 3 ("Hunter") ends and ends with the final scene of Episode 5 ("I'll Believe in Anything"). It follows Kip's growth from smoothie barista to graduate student and beyond. It accompanies Scott on his journey as a lonely and conflicted professional hockey star who became the Game Changer he was destined to be. And it chronicles the path to sunshine for their relationship.

Season 1 of the 2025 Heated Rivalry television series is treated as canon, and this work assumes the reader is very familiar with the show and especially the Scott and Kip characters within it. A few elements are inspired by events in the book Game Changer by Rachel Reid or other books in the series, but only to the extent that it does not conflict with TV canon. There are several original characters and new roles for familiar ones.

  4. “Fuck. All that Serial Killer talk was you warning me, wasn’t it?” Kip said in a joking tone.

Scott glanced at him. Because yes, he was right. It had been a warning. And like a lamb to the slaughter, Kip had still walked into his trap.

  5. Scott Hunter has always lived his life like there's a homophobic sniper tracking his every move, who gets a 'ping' any time he acts too gay. After half the government is revealed as a Nazi front, he discovers the sniper is in fact real (though not homophobic). He's now eating Lucky Charms in Scott's kitchen, saying something about a vacancy.

So Scott gets a roommate, but at least he knows he won't fall in love with this gay brunet from Brooklyn. After all, he's still hung up on the last one.

  6. Scott Hunter is Captain America, working a thankless job with the Black Widow, also known as Ilya Rozanov, when shit starts to hit the fan.
