    “Oh.” Kip sounds surprised that he’s sharing anything about himself unprompted and stands next to him to look at the painting together. “So you know all the saints and everything?”

    “Saint Christopher,” Scott says quietly and he feels so brave and reckless when he brushes the back of his knuckles against Kip’s. He’s rewarded with a little smile. “Patron saint of travelers. You’ve been watching over this traveler anyway.”

    Shawn laughs, sounding a little bit evil. “How long do playoffs last?”

    “Don’t ask,” Kip replies darkly.

    Scott took his sunglasses from the side pocket of his backpack and put them on. His phone vibrated. He pulled it out and there it was: a picture of Kip and Elena from across the street. Kip smiling, Elena pouting. Below it, the caption: "Please don't die crossing this sea of people."

    Scott laughed to himself, put the phone away, and pushed the door open.

    The screams of excitement crashed over Scott like a wave. Fans crowded the sides of the path, many with tears in their eyes, others with their arms reaching over the metal barricades, everyone wanting a piece of that night. Happy shouts celebrating the victory, hoarse voices declaring their love for the team, words of pride and admiration. Scott smiled slightly, giving a general wave as he walked, sharing looks of gratitude to both sides – until the smile froze on his face.

    "THEY TURNED HOCKEY GAY?! SERIOUSLY?! FUCK YOU, HUNTER!"

    The voice cut through the air like a blade. Scott swallowed hard, his eyes finding a compact group on the other side of the metal barricades. Not happy at all. Men, mostly, their expressions twisted with hate, being held back by the police officers doing security.

    "HOPE YOU DIE, YOU FAGGOT!"

    Kip is stressed. In fact, stressed is an understatement. There are levels of sheer terror in his eyes that Scott has never previously experienced outside of seeing his own face in the mirror during the last week of playoffs.

    He is suddenly glad he never finished college, because writing a Master’s thesis seems to be the cruelest punishment any God of Academia has ever inflicted upon its faithful followers. (Well, so far – he kind of hopes for Kip’s sake that he changes his mind about going for a PhD.)

    Scott turns his head to the side to catch his lips in a proper kiss and then rubs their noses together.

    “Your face,” he says and feels Kip’s little giggle as a soft puff of air against his cheek. He’s so weak for him, so utterly smitten. He could still melt into a puddle every time Kip so much as smiles at him.
