Flight 771 shouldn't have been any different than any of the hundreds of other flights that Shane has taken over the course of his career, aside from the fact that it was taking him towards his lifelong dream—towards the Olympics.

It shouldn't have been any different.

  2. At some point between getting home and finding the mess in the kitchen, Shane calls the police and his parents in quick succession.

He doesn’t remember those phone calls at all. Blocked them from his memory the second they were over—doesn’t know what he said, what his mother replied—what the operator on the other end of the line asked him.

The only proof he has of ever placing the calls is the record of them in his phone—neatly stacked over-on-another. 911 right below Mom.

Below that, a series of phone calls to Ilya (husband), some barely even twenty seconds long, just short little I love you’s and what juice did you say you wanted from the store’s. Shane actually has to scroll for a while before he finds any other number in his call log.

If Shane were to add all of that data into an excel sheet he’d have proof that Ilya took up about 90% of his call records and yet it doesn’t feel like enough.

  4. “Hello? What is going on? Did you mean to call me?” Ilya asked nervously, glancing around at his team to make sure they weren’t focused on him, confirming that most of them were either undressing and checking their own phones or teasing St. Simone about the new tattoo he had gotten the other day.

“I—I think—” Shane stuttered, and Ilya frowned when he heard another scream from Shane’s end of the line that didn’t sound like a gleeful hockey celebration. Was there something beeping loudly, too?

“I think the plane is crashing.”

And Ilya’s world came crumbling down.

  5. Ilya feels his phone buzz a few times on his way to the elevator, probably everyone confirming they are on the move. He waits until the doors close to check who their group will be tonight.

  6. Moving to Blüdhaven had been the chance for Shane Hollander to get his fresh start: he was out of Gotham and New York, and all the pressure that the expectations of those places held for him; he had all the good that he could do, both with an identity formed under a new mask and his public persona; he had the opportunity to coach gymnastics again for the love of it; and he had Ilya Rozanov. But the thing with being a hero is that the past never rests, and Nightwing’s greatest nemesis has a grudge that Shane can’t shake.

or - Shane Hollander is Nightwing, gymnastics coaching is the side gig he shares with Ilya Rozanov, and Deathstroke is the inevitable end of it all.

  7. It’s his Person.

Missed you missed you missed you, he tries to convey with no mouth and no voice and all his heart. He’s reborn the way he died; the name of his Person nestled safe against his tongue.

“Ilya,” Shane gasps, and his heart beats again.

Shane Hollander dies the second Ilya Rozanov’s plane goes down. It just takes a while for his body to catch up.

Thankfully, death isn't permanent — for either of them. Their tangled souls have been given a second chance at life, and they’re going to act like it. Which means never separating again. Ever.

After all, death can’t part them. Why should hockey?

  8. A fiery plane crash claims Ilya Rozanov’s life in January. By April, Shane Hollander is dead of a broken heart. The truth dies with them.

Yuna Hollander will do anything to get her son back, including hiring a shady shaman to resurrect him. There’s just one complication — Shane isn’t coming back alone.

Now there are codependent (not)zombies in her house wearing Ilya and Shane’s faces. When they inexplicably act more like a married couple than the bitter rivals she expected, Yuna is convinced that they came back wrong.

It’s easier than admitting she never understood them from the start.

  9. “I’m here. I’m here,” comes through, finally. “Sorry, just- I’m here. What do you need?”

“Just talk,” Ilya begs, not even caring how pathetic he sounds. “Please.”

“Okay, okay,” Hollander breathes. “You know. I keep thinking. This isn’t right. There’s something fucking wrong.”

“Of course there’s something wrong, Hollander! Your building is on fire!”

    “I fucking know, Rozanov!”

    Or:

Pre-tunamelt, in peak situationship era, Hollanov’s building catches fire… with Ilya still inside.

  10. Ilya had told Shane to leave because they needed space - they needed some room to catch their breath so they could talk about things properly. So they could say sorry and fix the mess they had made. But one day apart stretched into two, into three, into a week, and suddenly Shane was on the other end of the phone, saying, ”Maybe this isn’t going to work, Ilya.” At least Ilya is good at that part; he’s an expert in being left behind. (Or, Ilya and Shane breakup. Then the Centaurs’ plane almost crashes.)

The movement made Shane’s hand slip, another gush of blood spurting across his fingertips. “Shut up,” Shane bit in return, fraught. “Shut the fuck up.” Or: At the Montreal - Boston game in April 2017, it is Ilya who is injured instead of Shane.

  12. Pop star Shane Hollander is no stranger to crowds and success, but when an anonymous gunman at a press appearance threatens his life, the safety of his upcoming tour is called into question. Desperate to keep their cash cow not only safe, but happy, League Records hires former Spetsnaz operative Ilya Rozanov to provide 24/7 personal security for Shane. As the two spend time together, Shane Hollander realizes that the real threat to his life, to his career, is his own heart...and the way that he feels for the very man he is depending on to keep him safe.

  14. "I told him to pick up milk," Shane sobbed, the sound hysterical and broken. "That’s the last thing I said to him. ‘Pick up some milk on the way home.’ I didn't say I loved him. I didn't say stay. I didn't even look him in the eye because I was frustrated with the loss. I just told him to buy fucking milk." Ilya Rozanov has always been a master of control. Of the puck, of the media, of his own jagged edges. But lately, the edges have started to blur. The "Czar" is retreating, leaving behind a house that looks like a museum and a husband who is starting to feel like a stranger. When the last of Ilya's mess is cleared away and his ring is left behind like a final period at the end of a sentence, Shane has to face the terrifying truth: Ilya doesn't think he’s leaving a hole behind, he thinks he’s cleaning one up. Kinda compliant to The Long Game, but before Ilya talks about his depression with Shane, or goes to seek help.

  15. Ilya Rozanov has always understood the power of a name.

On the ice, it’s a threat.
    In headlines, it’s a brand.
    In Boston, it’s a chant.

But in Moscow, it was once a lullaby.
And in Shane Hollander’s voice, it becomes something softer. Something dangerous. Something that makes Ilya want more than he was ever meant to have.

From a golden kitchen in Moscow to the roar of Boston crowds, from hotel rooms and tuna melts to hospital monitors and wedding vows, this is the story of how a boy who learned what silence feels like finds someone who refuses to stop saying his name.

And maybe—just maybe—that’s what saves him.

  16. What if Shane never got injured? What if Ilya decided to finally take a step back? What if the 5th best player of MLH was suddenly spotted hanging out hockey's golden boy Shane Hollander? What if Ilya had a few feelings about it? —×— Ilya is aware of Sebastian Hawthorne like he's aware of all the top 10 players of the league. Though he knows no one can come close to him and Hollander, he still likes to keep an eye out for them. Hawthorne, or as his teammates call him, Hawk, joined the Toronto Guardians during his Rookie season and has been there for the past six seasons. He's the assistant captain. “It's like he’s already seen the play unfold five seconds ahead,” Shane had once complained to Ilya over the phone after a particularly nasty loss against the Guardians some seasons back. Ilya then got the impression that Shane didn't like him either. So imagine his surprise when the picture of Hollander and Hawk shows up on his feed: laughing and practically having the time of their lives while leaving a high-end bakery.

  17. Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are both single dads trying to figure out life, work, and parenting without losing their minds or their kids. Shane’s raising his energetic son Kai, who’s basically a little whirlwind on the ice and at home, while Ilya’s daughter Anastasiya (Ana) is smart, sassy, and has him wrapped around her finger. They meet because their kids are involved in hockey and quickly start running into each other at practices, games, and playdates. Through shared chaos, ice rinks full of screaming kids, they start to rely on each other. Casual hangouts become coffee breaks, practice pickups become dinners, and slowly, what starts as friendship begins to feel a lot like something more.

The entire world tilts on its axis.

For a moment Shane feels like he’s being burned alive, and then in an instant it’s just bitter cold; there’s ice in his veins, his lungs, his heart. God, his heart. Is it still beating? He can’t tell. Surely not. Surely, if Ilya were - if he were gone, then Shane’s heart would have fallen still. There would be nothing left for it to beat for.
