heat seeker (the many names of ilya rozanov) by Anonymous
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-02-23
Ilya Rozanov has always understood the power of a name.
On the ice, it’s a threat.
In headlines, it’s a brand.
In Boston, it’s a chant. But in Moscow, it was once a lullaby.
And in Shane Hollander’s voice, it becomes something softer. Something dangerous. Something that makes Ilya want more than he was ever meant to have. From a golden kitchen in Moscow to the roar of Boston crowds, from hotel rooms and tuna melts to hospital monitors and wedding vows, this is the story of how a boy who learned what silence feels like finds someone who refuses to stop saying his name.
And maybe—just maybe—that’s what saves him.

When Ilya finds out of his teammates has been using, his decision to turn him over to coach has the entire team penalized and they lose their momentum right before playoffs. To make matters worse, even after a press release clears the rest of the Raiders of any wrongdoings, the whole league still things Ilya is a cheater. Including Shane's team, who talks about it nonstop until one night he snaps and starts a fight with his own team on the ice.
---
Ilya stepped towards him, hand grazing his elbow to try to get him to loosen up a bit. “You said, earlier, that it was me,” he mumbled. “You fought because of me."“Just a bit,” Shane joked weakly, looking back up at him. “They just- they hate you, Ilya. My parents, my team, my fans. And I hear it so much in the locker room or during practice, but on ice I- I couldn't fucking stand it anymore.”
“Is sweet,” he murmured, threading his hand through Shane’s hair and nudging him to lay his head on his shoulder. “But their words don’t hurt me.”
Shane sighed, nuzzling against the fabric of his shirt for a moment. “Hurts me, though,” he said softly. “I don’t like hearing anyone accuse you of cheating.”

"Why are you not scared?"
"I am scared," Ilya admits. "I just am tired. Of hiding me. Of hiding you. Of hiding how much I love you. I want to go to the rink— how do you say it? Authenti."
"Authentically," Shane supplies, automatically.
"Yes. Authentically. I want to go to the rink authentically, as me," Ilya confirms.
Ilya looks at Shane, pauses until Shane meets his eyes. "I want to say: I, Ilya Rozanov, love a man, and that man's name is Shane Hollander."

Ilya shifted him gently, until Shane was half across his chest, head tucked under Ilya’s chin. The steady thump of his heartbeat under his ear was a metronome for Shane’s still unsteady rhythm. Shane let his eyes close. The thrumming in his chest was still there, quieter now but never totally gone. But recognising he wasn’t alone, that Ilya would never leave him alone steeled his nerves. or five times Shane Hollander needs a little support, and one time Ilya Rozanov does too.

Buckle On Your Belt by bunniesarebad
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-02-22
Shane has a new thing he does in bed now. He says: “Tell me I’m your favorite." "Tell me I suck you better than anyone else." "Tell me I’m the best fuck." Ilya knows he must have wanted to say this before, but thought it was too revealing. He still only says it when he’s pretty lost in what they’re doing. Ilya loves it. Loves anytime Shane is desperate and possessive and needy. It’s one of his favorite ways for Shane to be. He thinks this, and he doesn’t think anything else because he is very stupid, maybe. He says “yes yes yes” and watches Shane light up. Sometimes he says “I don’t know” just to make him blush harder, work harder, cry harder. Get even hungrier underneath him. ... Instead of Ilya pitching an open relationship in TLG, he finds out Shane thinks they already have one. Or: Ilya finally realizes how deeply he fucked Shane up by conditioning him to accept that he would never be enough for Ilya. He tries to address this insecurity in true tuna-melt fashion by showing Shane fuckboy-era sex tapes of himself with other people. Somehow, they still manage to work it out. The first time it comes up they’re still in that happy, sunshine-filled, impossible bubble. Those two weeks at the cottage, the very first time. Shane is hanging over his shoulder, pretending to supervise the way he’s frying bacon, actually just abusing the fact that they can touch as often as they want for the first time in a decade. Ilya cannot even tease him about this because he does the same thing. Finds himself plastered to Shane’s back while he showers, “helping” him take out the trash, generally being a nuisance and high on the fact that the only thing it causes is laughter, teasing. No leaving. No breaking the thing they have between them. No clock counting down minutes until he has to pretend to want to leave. “Sorry Ottawa has, like, no nightlife,” Shane says, like Ilya has any idea what he’s talking about when he’s speaking mostly into the side of his neck. He wiggles his head so he can kiss the side of Shane’s ear, edging Shane further back so he isn’t at risk of getting popped with the grease. “How will I survive the boredom, you think?” Shane laughs and it’s like someone plugged in Ilya’s cord, like he’s switched on, like he’s powered by Shane’s joy and noises and the smile he can feel against his skin. “Wellll, I’m not always here, you know. Almost never during the season. You’ll still have to spend a bunch of time bored here by yourself. Although, it’s not too far a drive to Montreal.” Shane’s smile is fading now, he can feel it where they’re still pressed together. “Is okay. When my boring boyfriend is not here, his boring family says I am welcome anytime.” And Shane is melting, grinning at that, and Ilya decides the bacon is done enough. It’s not like Shane will agree to eat any of it anyway. He doesn’t even know to be scared then. It’s so small. … Three months later Shane has a new thing he does in bed now. He says, “Tell me I’m your favorite, tell me I suck you better than anyone else, tell me I’m the best fuck”. Ilya knows he must have wanted to say this before, but thought it was too revealing. Get even hungrier underneath him. ... Another month passes and it is hard, being Shane’s boyfriend. Much better and much easier but much harder too, than just being Lily. He’s never been owned before like this. Except by the team who holds his contract, or his obligations to his family, his country. This type of owning feels freer. But it also means he has significantly less ways to make himself forget how far away he is from what he wants. How many things could happen that would break this forever. How long it’s going to be before he can see Shane again. It’s easier at home because of his team, or when he plays in Ottawa and Montreal because of Yuna and David, who he really does like to spend time with. It feels greedy almost, like he’s tricking them, when he comes over and gets all that care and attention and he hasn’t even brought Shane. They overlook this loss and act like he’s supposed to be there anyway. When he’s on the road in other cities and won’t see Shane for a while his fantasies get weirder and more embarrassing than they even were before all this, which is saying something. He wants to quit his job. Be Shane’s puck bunny. WAG maybe. Follow him on the road, show up in the WAGS section with some little kid who looks like Shane on his lap. Make him weird macrobiotic food and ask about his day and drop off his dry cleaning. He might actually consider it if it wouldn’t mean never getting Shane on the ice again, which is simply unbearable, even more than being 1000 miles away and not even getting a text back because his boyfriend is busy with some event. Shane never mentions it and he rarely mentions it to Shane except to say 53 days, 14 days, 2 days. He thinks there’s no point in talking about what they can’t change. He thinks they’re in that together. … One of his favorite parts of being a boyfriend, on the very very long list of favorite things that include not having to pretend he doesn’t want to lick Shane’s freckles at literally every opportunity and getting to hear Shane talk about him in the future tense is ditching condoms. He thinks it can’t feel much different for Shane, at least during, but Shane was made in a laboratory specifically to drive him insane with lust and comes faster when they don’t use them, just from knowing they’re that much closer, just from thinking about how Ilya’s going to stay in him afterwards, dripping out slow, leaving him just slightly less empty. He tells him this with his cheeks red and his lips all puffy and his eyes glazed over and his hand rubbing his lower stomach like he can feel where Ilya’s come inside him. This is lucky for Ilya because Ilya absolutely comes way faster than usual. He keeps thinking he’s going to get used to it but so far that is not the case. It’s still so much fucking hotter, wetter, softer he ends up ordering Shane to come before him. Or pulling out and eating Shane as a breather before he keeps on fucking into him, all messy and open and so sensitive he tears up and smacks into Ilya’s back with his heels. What a hardship. So, part of him is kind of relieved when Shane wants to keep using them sometimes. He’s not completely surprised. Shane mostly drops his aversion to all things mess when he pops a boner but it comes back tragically fast in the aftermath when the sheets are wet and tangled up and the pillows aren’t in the right place. He’s completely insane and Ilya loves it, loves him, loves being ordered to grab a towel for gods sake. So whenever Shane kind of awkwardly asks about using condoms again sometimes, he doesn’t mind at all. It just means he can focus on driving Shane out of his mind and crawling inside him and not having to do English language conjugations in his head to keep from going off too fast like he hasn’t had to since he was a teenager, before Shane ruined him, turned him into whatever he was now. If there’s a pattern to when Shane asks, if it lines up

How to Build a Legacy by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Shane knows the plan to wait to come out until they retire isn't ideal, but he doesn't have a better one. He thinks that he and Ilya can make it work, until his mom points out how long they will have to live their lives in the shadows.
But once he realizes that, he immediately knows that he can't come out. It would ruin his legacy.
He's pretty sure that's why he doesn't want to come out. No other reason. Right?
He is sure that's all it is until Ilya asks him if he would be safe if he came out. And he can't answer.

or Yuna does the math on the retirement plan and when she points this out it opens Shane's eyes.

“We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”
Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.
“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”
Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.

So Much Of You Is Left Behind by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-02-21
Loud beeps from his phone startled Ilya, and he slowed down, reaching for the device he’d put on the bar between his legs. Jane. He smiled to himself when he saw the notifications, and, checking Marlowe was absorbed in his own fitness, opened it quickly, smiling in anticipation of Shane's words.
The smile was wiped off his face almost instantly.
The blood drained from his face, and Ilya felt like the bottom had just fallen out of his world.
*****
Maybe he was naive, but Ilya always thought he had time. Time with Shane. Time to tell him what he truly meant to him.
That, somehow, one way or another, Shane would always be there.
But a text message late one night threatens to destroy the future that Ilya has spent the time carefully constructing in his mind.
Maybe Shane wasn't always going to be there. That Shane would be cruelly snatched away from him before he had a chance to be honest.
That he would be left behind. Alone.

“You're being cruel, Ilya. Please just— stop.” Pain blooms across Ilya's expression, a brief lapse in form. He's quick to recover, furrowing his brow and pursing his lips, like Shane’s made more than a simple request, like he's got Rose Landry here in his lap, parading her around like Ilya has with all his women since rookie year. Like he has any right to that pain. “Oh, so this is what it takes to make you say my name without freaking out.” Or: Shane does not go home with Rose after the club.

“Ilya,” he whispers, voice hoarse. “I don’t feel right.” The hand doesn’t pull away. Instead, it slides lower. Shane stiffens as fingers trace down his spine, lingering too long, dipping beneath the hem of his shirt. Skin-on-skin contact sends a jolt through him, not pleasure, not comfort, but something sharp and wrong. His breath catches. Then the hand grips him. Firmly. Possessive. Fingers digging into his ass through his jeans. Shane jerks slightly, confusion slicing through the fog. His heart stutters, a hard, uneven beat that makes his chest ache. "He hates me." It was Rozanov's only reply, frail and desperate and entirely unbelieving. Scott couldn't help but scoff.
"No he doesn't." Rozanov kept his steely gaze trained on the ground, making a few attempts to speak before words actually found him.
"That is what he said?" His shaky words were a timid mix of devastated and hopeful, and Scott found himself fighting back watering eyes of his own.
"More than once." Scott confirmed. "Something tells me that you don't hate him, either." With that, the dam broke.

Ilya is…he’s Shane’s entire heart. The air that he breathes, the reason for everything he does. None of it would matter without Ilya. This is the closest he’s ever come to losing him, and the thought of it - the possibility that everything they’ve been fighting for could just be lost - had struck Shane so acutely, so agonisingly.
He’d once thought that losing hockey was the worst thing that could ever happen to him. He knows, now, that isn’t true.

His entire body felt tense as the door was pushed open. He trained his eyes on the floor, monologuing before he could stop himself, “Just so you know, my buddies paid for this dance for me and I’m sure you’re very nice and very pretty and good at what you do but I’m actually gay so you can just- Do what you need to do but I don’t want you to be offended because I’m not as into this as you’re probably… usually…used to…” He trailed away as he looked up, and met the eyes of the very tall, very broad, very handsome man leaning against the doorframe. They stared at each other, and Shane blinked, struck dumb. Or, the night of JJ's bachelor party, Shane is forced into a lap dance he very much does not want. Until he does, and everything changes.

"What's happening?" asks the lone Raiders fan that Shane has found himself next to, a young woman with St. Simone on the back of her black and gold jersey.
Her friend, a handsome woman in Metros' blues, explains, "Une malédiction. A curse." Her Québécois accent lifts the ends of her sentences into a lilting melody.
"Oh." The Raiders fan frowns, concerned. "Does someone have it out for Hollander? Shouldn't sporting arenas be protected against that?"
Her friend laughs. "It's Centre Bell itself who has it out for Hollander. You've never heard the story about the TD Garden trying to eat Magic Johnson?"

"We have newest member of the team with us today, as you all have seen.”
Shane glanced up again, watching as the captain gestured vaguely toward Shane without looking at him. “Shane Hollander.” The name came out of his mouth like it was laced with poison.
Shane became very aware of many eyes turning to him now. He felt a few claps on the back and tried to force a tight smile. But his eyes wandered back up to Ilya Rozanov, who was looking at him with so much quiet contempt, that Shane started to understand the phrase ‘if looks could kill.’
/
OR: Ilya spirals into a deep depression when Shane breaks things off with him definitively after a horrifying run in with their feelings (and tuna melts).
They go no contact for close to a year until Shane is unexpectedly traded to Boston the following season.
Shane finds his new captain is a version of Ilya he's never seen before: dark, icy, and distant.
But their newfound proximity mixed with old feelings creates a complicated dynamic that they can't ignore forever.
