The Things We Can Change by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-10-06
This is a love letter to the all the millenials like me who played it too careful and forgot to enjoy our youth. Shane and Ilya, enjoy it for me, do good. Fuck it good, fuck it right. Life is too short to live it scared.
The arena is too loud.
That’s the first thing Shane notices; not the ice, not the lights, not the jersey on his shoulders that suddenly feels wrong in a way he can’t articulate. The sound hits him like pressure, like something physical, a wall of noise that vibrates in his chest.
He’s already bent over for the faceoff when it hits him- skates set, stick down, weight forward. His body is exactly where it’s supposed to be even if his brain is still skidding uselessly, trying to catch traction.
There’s only a split second before the puck drops.
It stretches.
He lifts his eyes.
Ilya.
Young. So fucking young. Is he dreaming? Not worn by years of hockey, travel, interviews and losses and victories that stack so high they blur together. He’s young again; sharp boned, bright eyed, unable to grow a beard to save his life. Bears black and gold instead of Centaurs red. 'If I look down am I going to be pantsless too?' He thought absently, no way this was real... right?- Part 1 of TTWCH

Ilya leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, a silhouette painted in moonlight and shadow. And Shane thought, as he often had, that he might explode from loving this man so much. That thank god they’d had a kid because now Shane had someone else important and hallowed to pour this love into, or else it might be too much to bear.

In a world where homophobia and queer fear doesn't exist, in a world where love can happen out in the open for anyone and everyone, Shane Hollander is still stubbornly single. As the Captain of the Montreal Voyageurs, he insists he's too focused on hockey and his career for a relationship, when in reality, old fears of being seen as "the hockey weirdo" keep him from unmasking. That is, until Ilya Rozanov enters his life. The newly single Captain of the Ottawa Centaurs, after a decade-long relationship ends amicably, is now interested in the one man who won't give him the time of day. So when Shane, while on National Television, tells Ilya he'll have to "impress him" to earn that first date, Ilya takes it as the greatest challenge of his life. What follows is a whirlwind of grand romantic gestures, public flirting, chirping (flirting) on the ice, social media ploys and and ever escalating spectacle. All while the NHL, their friends, their family, their teams, and fans across the continent watch, cheer, and place bets on when Shane will finally say yes.

“I’m sorry I’m not him,” Shane says, looking away.
“Who?”
“Future me. Whoever you fell in love with.” What’s unsaid hangs in the air: whoever fell in love with you. Because this Shane – 2010 Shane – doesn’t love him. Is amused by their daily lessons, comforted by his presence, even grateful. But love?
“That’s the thing, Shane,” Ilya says. His eyes are shining. “You are, right now, exactly who I fell in love with.”
In 2031, Shane wakes up in the hospital certain that it's 2010. Ilya is there to remind him of the two decades he's missed and the life they've built along the way.

Ilya Rozanov's life takes an unexpected turn when a deadly plane crash in 2021 takes his life, right after a fight with his long-time partner, Shane Hollander. Though instead of the afterlife, Ilya is sent back to December 2008, just before his NHL career began, on the very day that he first met Shane. He finds himself in a familiar world, with knowledge of both the future and knowledge of the man he loves and the friends he holds dear. As Ilya navigates this new reality, he rebuilds his relationship with Shane, who is still finding his path in both hockey and his identity as a gay man. With their rivalry blossoming into a different experience than the one Ilya experienced the first time around, the two face challenges around acceptance, family pressures, and the struggles of being openly gay and lovers in the sports world. Throughout their journey, Ilya contemplates his first life, cherishes the present, and strives to alter the course of their futures (and the futures of their friends) for the better. Or, Ilya Rozanov discovers first hand what the butterfly effect is, and how it can drastically alter the future.

The lamp next to him provides a light glow as Shane opens his laptop, shaking out his nerves. Navigating to Google is harder, and he almost backs out completely. But he knows that closing his computer now would be far worse in the long run, confirming something about him.
Something that probably isn’t even true.

"You should grow this longer," Rozanov once said, running his fingers through Shane's practical cut, the same one he had since he was fifteen. Rozanov's blond curls had fallen in his eyes. Behind them, his blue eyes glittered like he was looking at the sun. "You would be so lovely."
It felt like being lit on fire.
Or; Shane is Rozanov's girl.
