“If it ever gets bad,” he’d said quietly, eyes serious in a way that made Ilya’s chest ache, “you call me. Or you call my parents. You don’t get to drown by yourself anymore. They love you. I love you and that’s not conditional.” Ilya had brushed it off at first. He always did. “I am not drowning.” Shane had just tilted his head. “Promise me anyway.” And because it was Shane, because the word promise meant something sacred to him, Ilya had nodded. “I promise.” (ie. ilya gets sent a photo of irina while shane is in montreal and does the right thing and reaches out for help)

He meant to have this conversation months ago, if he’s honest.
Truly, he’d planned on reaching out. Had tweaked his usual Instagram message, the one that both offers condolences and community. Scott didn’t figure that Rozanov would respond particularly well to that level of sincerity, especially given the lack of details around his family life – even after his father’s death had been announced by the media. Instead, he’d decided to throw in a light chirp and remove some of the apologies as a middle ground solution.
________________Or, Scott planned to reach out to Rozanov over the summer about his father. But now -- at the Opening Banquet for the 2017-2018 NHL Season -- is as good of a time as any.

Yuna Hollander… got his number from Hayden Pike? Two people he has rarely if ever spoken to, yet who are undeniably important to Shane. Two people who have absolutely no reason to have his phone number.
His eyes scan back up and snag on that name. Lily.
She thinks she’s talking to Lily.
Ilya’s hands move before his brain. He doesn’t bother to worry about where she could’ve heard the name from, not when he knows Shane never talks to anyone about what they do. No one should know about Lily, but Mrs. Hollander somehow does. She is offering him some kind of information, and he doesn’t care what he has to do to get it—pretending to be Shane’s Boston hookup is nothing.

“Hi Irina.” Ilya feels his blood still in his veins. His vision almost immediately blurs at the sound of his mother’s name falling so gently from Shane’s lips. Shane rambles something, almost to himself, before: “I’m Shane. Shane Hollander. And I’m in love with your son, Ilya.” Ilya’s breath catches, heart lurching in his chest, fluttering almost painfully as the realization hits him: He’s introducing himself to her. . . or Shane talks to Ilya’s mom, Ilya overhears.

Kip loves Scott, so he's willing to join him wherever he's needed, whether that's at games or social events or - god forbid - MLH-mandated youth hockey initiatives. Even if Ilya Rozanov is there. OR: Kip and Ilya meet after the on-ice kiss. An unlikely friendship ensues, along with an even more unlikely double date. OR: Scott Hunter thinks Rozanov might have found a new and unusual method of torture: making friends with his boyfriend. That alone is bad enough, but when Rozanov shows up at his door with Shane Hollander in tow, Scott is left to reckon with the frankly unfathomable fact of their secret decade-long relationship. He still thinks he's too lazy to be a serial killer, but perhaps a single premeditated murder isn't off the table.

He holds out the cigarettes and lighter in one hand and the vodka glass in the other, and Ilya looks at him, surprise evident in his hazel eyes even in the dim light.
“What?” Shane grins. “Didn’t think I knew about your secret stash?”
Ilya’s smile back almost reaches his eyes, and he takes Shane’s offerings without a word.
Flint strikes and with a flick of flame, a different type of smoke starts to fill the air, floating slowly up into the trees.
Normally, Shane would wait inside until Ilya finished his cigarette, but today, he sits and leans his head on Ilya’s shoulder, willing to make the concession.
“I hate this day,” Ilya says, his face once again stony, while he lets out a long puff of smoke into the cooling air around them.
“I know,” Shane says, his fingers tracing along the soft fabric of Ilya’s sweats. “I hate it for you.”
It’s the same every year on the anniversary of his mother’s death. A long day spent with few words and deep sighs bleeds into nightfall. They sit and look out over the water, ghosts flickering across Ilya’s eyes like the firelight around them.
___Or Ilya hates this day. Shane hates it for him. They sit together anyway.

The Hollander Inn by FreeformHardcore
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-15
Now that he could finally recognize who the man in front of him was, everything flooded back into the forefront of his mind. The nights he spent in Moscow poring over hockey content on YouTube, how watching the teen that was poised to be his rival stirred up newfound ambition to become the greatest instead. He remembered that career-ending hit as well, the way Shane’s body crumpled on the ice, tiny and unconscious, body contorted unnaturally as his teammates crowded around him. He remembered the disappointment he felt at not having anyone else to best, to directly compare himself against. Time had passed, and so too did that disappointment in favor of achieving the greatness that Hollander promised. And with that time, Shane Hollander was just another name of the past. But now he was right in front of him, freckles all in the same spots and gear replaced with ugly knit sweaters. Or In which Shane Hollander never became the hockey legend he was supposed to. Ilya Rozanov did. Somehow, in the midst of a blizzard, their stories intertwined once more.

Ilya considers, then, the idea of a smaller joy, the kind so molecular no one would know how to make him feel sorry for any of it. He thinks of Svetlana and him at McDonald’s, drunk and laughing; sprints, instead of long and dreadful runs; and even then that familiar swath of freckles, all faded from weak winter sun. There are times when Ilya is sorry, and there are times when he is not. (or: Heated Rivalry, as told through so many apologies.)
