Ilya Rozanov, break out star of the hit show Skating Limits, has a problem. His stalker is escalating to violence and ruining the press tour for the new season. Naturally, his agent and childhood friend, Svetlana, has a solution to the problem: Shane Hollander, former Secret Service agent and private bodyguard.

Shane, however, has his reservations about the job. He doesn't work with celebrities. Celebrities are security risks and they don't listen. So Ilya will have to play ball, or Shane will break their contract, leaving him exposed to the man hunting him.

Despite the risks, they don't seem to be able to stay away from one another anyway. While Ilya contends with his growing feelings, Shane is more than ready to do whatever it takes to protect his principal.

  5. Ilya rubbed at his face with both hands, trying to knead the heaviness away. It didn’t budge. Probably just caught something from the kids, he thought to himself. Some kind of virus. Except he'd been feeling like this for weeks now. Maybe longer. It was hard to tell. The days blurred when you were tired, and he’d been tired for longer than he wanted to admit. Maybe it was something still lingering in his system. That happened sometimes, right? Viruses could hang around. He'd read that somewhere. Post-viral fatigue. Yeah. That was probably it. Some dormant virus still working its way out of him. Or, Ilya and Shane are married with kids, living the life they fought for. But Ilya's depression is rearing its ugly head again.

  6. Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice. He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone. Impact. The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp. -------------------------------- Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

  7. Shane and Ilya are about to start their first season in Ottawa as a married couple. Yay! They have been celebrating up until this moment. But anxiety always catches up to Shane when he least expects it. And a new team means new dynamics, new playing styles, and new people. Shane knows, logically, that he's ready for it. But emotionally, maybe not. *post long game*

  8. Shane swallowed hard, tears still slipping down his face, but he managed another breath. Then another. Each one shaky. Each one fragile. But they were coming. Ilya kept his hand steady against his back, the other still lightly holding his forearm. “You’re okay,” he repeated quietly. “I’m right here.” Shane’s voice came out broken and small. “I'm sorry. I couldn’t- I tried- I needed-” His words dissolved into another shaky inhale, frustration and shame mixing with the remnants of panic. Ilya didn’t press him to explain. He knew Shane’s mind was still tangled in whatever storm had triggered this. Right now, breathing mattered more than understanding. “You don’t have to say anything,” he said softly. “Just breathe.” --- The pressure gets to Shane and he has an anxiety attack mid-game.

  9. “Ilya,” he whispers, voice hoarse. “I don’t feel right.” The hand doesn’t pull away. Instead, it slides lower. Shane stiffens as fingers trace down his spine, lingering too long, dipping beneath the hem of his shirt. Skin-on-skin contact sends a jolt through him, not pleasure, not comfort, but something sharp and wrong. His breath catches. Then the hand grips him. Firmly. Possessive. Fingers digging into his ass through his jeans. Shane jerks slightly, confusion slicing through the fog. His heart stutters, a hard, uneven beat that makes his chest ache. That’s… not- *** Someone puts something in Shane’s drink. Ilya is not happy.

  10. "He hates me." It was Rozanov's only reply, frail and desperate and entirely unbelieving. Scott couldn't help but scoff.

"No he doesn't." Rozanov kept his steely gaze trained on the ground, making a few attempts to speak before words actually found him.

"That is what he said?" His shaky words were a timid mix of devastated and hopeful, and Scott found himself fighting back watering eyes of his own.

"More than once." Scott confirmed. "Something tells me that you don't hate him, either." With that, the dam broke.

    or:

Scott's still looking for his hotel room after talking to Shane Hollander. He finds Ilya Rozanov, instead.

The brush off Shane received when he suggested Ilya try medication was hardly surprising to him. What he found shocking was that he had actually done it. Without telling Shane, no less. And if that wasn't startling enough, finding out the entire hockey community knew because of one ill-timed picture Cliff Marlow took practically knocked him off balance.
    ---
“Who knew Rozanov would be the poster boy for Prozac?” Hayden muttered with a huff. “God, he’s gotta be floating on cloud nine with that dose. Normal people take like what, ten or twenty? Sixty must mean he was damn near suicidal.”

“Probably,” JJ agreed, shrugging. “I wouldn’t know, I don’t need to medicate myself to cope with life.”

“If he’s all doped up, how come he’s still always such an asshole?” one of the rookies questioned, earning a few laughs.

Shane just felt sick to his stomach. And angry. At his team and Marlow and mostly at himself. Ilya had done exactly what he asked and now, he was getting mocked for taking care of himself. In what world was that fair?

“Maybe that’s why he’s so aggressive on the ice,” another theorized. “He's trying to kill himself and take another player with him to make it look like an accident.”

  13. Shane Hollander works at a coffee shop, plays hockey, keeps his head down, and doesn’t ask questions he doesn’t need the answers to.

So when a new regular starts showing up—quiet, watchful, Russian-accented, and conducting invitation-only meetings in the back—Shane notices. When that same man takes an unsettling interest in Shane’s closing shifts, his routines, and his safety, Shane does what feels sensible: he adjusts his behavior and keeps his mouth shut.

Ilya Rozanov orders an Americano. He reads, but only in Russian. He worries when people work late alone.

They are operating with very different definitions of danger.

If he didn’t ask questions, he couldn’t be lied to.

    The rules were simple.

    1. Do not ask questions you don’t need the answer to.
    2. Do not share personal information freely.
    3. Do not be alone with Ilya Rozanov.
    4. Do not give him a reason to think you’re afraid.

He knows Ilya is starting to notice, but he doesn't know what's wrong with him, so he's just going to pretend nothing is wrong.

Or, Many years ago, Shane Hollander was assaulted.

  17. Shane Hollander is tired of wanting someone he cannot have, and he’s dying as he waits for someone who will not stay. Someone who doesn’t want to stay, not when there are so many others waiting for him. Fun of another variety, Shane left a treat amongst many.

It’s humiliating. It’s distracting. And it feels like shit.

He wishes he could erase his feelings, move on as easily. In an effort to gain back control over the ‘situation’ that has become his romantic attraction to a notorious player, Shane attempts at imitating Ilya Rozanov’s methods until he perfects them and becomes as good as keeping it light and casual as his rival.

Or Shane tries to Hoe Phase himself into a self discovery journey to choke and kill his feelings for Ilya Rozanov. Ilya is not the only who suffers from it, but he sure feels like he’s being choked and killed.

  18. It had all got too real. That wasn’t what they were. They met up a couple times each year, took what they needed from the other, and then left before the afterglow could fade. They did not – could not – have any more than that. And they certainly did not call each other by their forenames. That would imply that they meant more to each other than either had ever expressed, that Rosanov was more than just Rosanov, Shane’s arch rival on ice and absolutely nothing off ice. And that could never happen. - Or, Hayden's reaction to Shane coming back to their hotel room freaking out and in Ilya's clothes in ep 4.

  19. Shane didn't know what he should say, what he could say. They hadn't talked since that night, hadn't been in contact much. Which at first hadn't worried Shane. It wasn't unusual for them to go longer periods of time without contact, and especially with the Olympics looming so close, with them both being chosen for their teams, it had only seemed logical to focus on their duties. He hadn't worried. Had lived in that blissful state of finally knowing what it felt like to be taken, of sharing the arguably most intimate part of himself with someone he trusted. Knew he could trust. Thought he could trust. OR: What happened during those 6 months when Ilya ignored Shane? How did that time change things for Shane?
