“I was,” Ilya waves at the clothes, flushing pink. “Cutting tags.” It’s Shane’s turn to blink at him. “Tags?” “Yes,” Ilya says, rubbing his nose. God, it’s unfair how good he looks—wearing Shane’s old hoodie, curls flopping over his forehead and blushing pink. “Did not think you would come back so early. I was going to finish and put them all back before you noticed.” Shane stares at him. “Why?” he asks, soft. “You don’t like them,” Ilya shrugs, like it’s simple. Ilya’s cutting off the tags from his clothes because Shane doesn’t like them. Ilya, who in all the years Shane has known him, has never once seemed bothered by them. “Yesterday,” Ilya explains, reaching over the bed and dropping the scissors on the bedside table, next to a pile of cut off tags. So many of them. “You were pulling at collar. Like this,” Ilya tugs at the collar of his own shirt, mirroring what Shane did for probably a millisecond yesterday. “You saw that?” Shane asks, awestruck. Fucking hell. or, ilya rozanov is deeply, deeply in love with shane hollander. the one where ilya rozanov is the loverboy of all time.

“Go?” Rozanov repeats, and Shane thinks he manages to nod, thinks he manages to spin some kind of excuse that he knows Rozanov doesn’t really buy, but he needs to go. He needs to get out of here. He needs to find somewhere quiet and calm where he can ride out this panic and painful tightness until he can catch his breath again. He needs-
He needs to go.
“I’m sorry,” he says, turning heel and resisting the urge to just book it right for the front door only because he’d rather not have to explain to Hayden why he returned from a hookup with Boston Lily in men’s clothes that he certainly didn’t leave in.
It’s not until he makes it halfway up the stairs to Rozanov’s bedroom that it occurs to him in a cold rush that it isn’t just anxiety that makes it this hard to breathe.
“No,” he tells himself firmly, white knuckling the bannister and trying to take a deep breath just to prove that he can.
It wheezes.

It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof. But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together. (how ilya learns about shane's food allergies) (and how shane learns what it's like to have someone who always saves him a seat at the table) (and who also makes sure there's food he can eat on the table to start with)

Shane makes some changes to protect his privacy. People notice. *5+1 of Shane establishing his boundaries. AU where Shane and Ilya were never caught at the cottage. Hayden Hayden frowned as the door beeped angrily at him and flashed red. 1919, he was sure of it. He’d typed in that code hundreds of times since Shane’s first official year as a Metro when he’d bought the condo and had him over to watch hockey and chirp at the television with him. He knew the code to Shane’ s place like the back of his hand. He must have typed it in too fast, too lazily. It wouldn’t be the first time. Hayden typed it in again, frowning when it beeped and flashed at him again. Hayden knocked on the door instead, waiting for Shane to answer. He relaxed a little when Shane answered, his damp from a recent shower, dressed in baggy sweatpants and black hoodie that looked fleecy and warm. “Hey Hayd,” he greeted, stepping aside to let Hayden pass. Hayden returned the greeting and took off his shoes before he passed the kale chips he brought to Shane. “For you. All dressed for me,” Hayden smiled. “Did you change your code?” Shane led the way into the kitchen, humming. “Yeah, sorry, remind me to text you the new one.” Hayden watched as Shane tipped the bags into two separate bowls, letting him grab the drinks and meet him on the couch. They switched cans and bowls and sat and watched the teams warm up for the Florida vs Toronto game. “Barrett’s a fucking mess,” Hayden said, watching him skate laps. “Tell me about it,” Shane agreed, cracking his can of ginger ale. “Did you see that hit he took from Bennett last week?” “Fuck, yeah,” Hayden remembered. Bennett had cleared across the rink in about three seconds flat to smash Barrett into the boards. Even through the television, Hayden had been able to see the glass shake and Barrett’s head bobble in shock. “I bet it’s his shoulder,” Shane said. Hayden turned to ask him how he knew, but Shane was looking down at his phone and smiling. Hayden knew that smile. “How’s Boston Lily?” he asked. Shane locked his phone and tucked it under his thigh as he reached for his kale chips. “Fine.” “Are you guys..” Hayden trailed off. Shane looked at him with a raised eyebrow, his face blank. “Are we..?” “Like, exclusive? It’s been ages,” Hayden tried. Shane just looked at he television. Hayden could see him twitch, and realised he could hear the repeat buzzing of his phone, sandwiched between his leg and the couch cushion. “Is she sending you like thirty text in a row? Jackie does that,” Hayden laughed. Shane loosened up just a little and nodded. “Yeah. I don’t get why she doesn’t just send one long one.” “I know!” Hayden smiled, thrilled that Shane was sharing something about his mystery girl. “It’s like she has to narrate every thought as she has it.” “Yeah,” Shane agreed. “I’ll still be replying to the first message and ten more come through. And by then, she’s already moved on from the first thing.” “Women,” Hayden lamented. Shane's posture tightened just a little, and Hayden kicked himself. He had been doing so well – Shane had shared something, even if it was the most stereotypical thing about an annoying girlfriend that every man could have said. For Shane, it was huge. Hayden looked at Shane, and for the first time in a while, he was struck by how young he looked. Sure, at twenty six, Hayden already had the twins and one on the way, but Shane had always seem sort of delayed in having a personal life to make room for hockey. It was nice to see him splayed out on his sofa, chips in his hand, talking about a girl as he chewed on the string of his hoodie. “So you guys talk about, like, regular things?” Hayden asked, doing his best to sound nonchalant and like he didn’t care. Shane shifted on the couch a little next to him. “Yeah. I mean, we’re friends, so. We talk.” Hayden nodded to himself. Friends. He could work with that. “That’s cool,” Hayden said, grabbing more chips for himself. “I mean, Jackie’s my best friend, so, I get it.” It might have been too much, but when Hayden snuck a look at Shane out of the corner of his eye, he could see that Shane was doing his best not to smile. Hayden was happy he had Lily, he really was. He wasn’t even a little bit heartbroken that Shane talked to her more than he talked to him.

"What is your problem?" Shane demanded, his voice sounding thinner than he liked, laced with the exhaustion of the night. "I gave up our bedroom and the guest room and now you're here". He heard the rustle of fabric as Ilya settled onto the far end of the couch, claiming his territory with his infuriating, unspoken intensity. "We sleep in same place no matter what," Ilya murmured, the low, steady vibration of his voice hitting Shane somewhere deep. "So stay put or I follow you around home".

Shane sighed, but nodded. “I’m just so tired of this. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life dealing with it.” Shane thought he was angry, but the sentiment just came out sounding sad.Ilya took a deep breath, running his wedding band along Shane’s cheek. “I know, Sweetheart. But you also have me for the rest of your life. Dealing with it with you. Tears pricked the corner of Shane’s eyes. Ilya pressed a kiss over his heart, where his head still lay. "Hi, solnyshko.” The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper. He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes. “Ilya-” was all Shane managed before strong arms were wrapped around his waist and lifting him off the ground in a greeting all too familiar from years ago. OR When Shane Hollander & Ilya Rozanov spent their summers as teens in an elite hockey camp, they quickly became inseparable friends. But they lose touch when Shane moves on as a prospect for the NHL and Ilya for the KHL. Years later, Montreal makes a bold move to take the hottest player in the KHL. After hearing of the Russian's reputation, the Montreal Captain is tasked with keeping his old best friend and new teammate out of trouble.

Market Analysis (or Shane Has Spent His Life Being Financially Responsible and Has a Few Things to Teach Ilya) by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers | Heated Rivalry - All Media Types
2026-05-30
Shane has married Ilya, a known chaos monster, with a penchant for fast cars and designer clothes. Shane has spent his life making sure he was financially responsible. Now it's time to merge these two different approaches to money management; It does not go the way Shane thinks it will.
They had been married for 32 days.
And now was the big conversation: estate planning, their assets, and what combining them would look like.
Shane had found a financial planner. Had set the appointment.
He was, after all, Shane Hollander; he had approached his financial future with all of the key characteristics of a Hollander. His mom had guided his career, negotiating sizable contracts for him, and his father worked for the Treasury. It was in his blood.
Ilya, meanwhile, had approached today's meeting with the same organizational energy he brought to most things in his life, except hockey: confident, yet chaotic, and generally not stressed out about whether things would work out in his favor.

“Y-Yeah, totally,” Shane replied. “D-Do you uh– do you know who that kid with Rozanov is?”
Scott laughed a little, tilting his head in confusion.
“Probably Rozanov’s kid,” he informed Shane, causing his brain to stall completely.
“You didn’t hear?” Scott asked, and Shane blinked, trying to reboot his mind from the crash that Scott had just caused. “It’s why he took time off,” Hunter informed him. “Found out he had a kid, I guess. Or something like that, I didn’t really get the details.”
Of all the reasons he’d thought of for Ilya disappearing for the past month, this had never crossed his mind. A million different thoughts raced through Shane’s mind. How the hell was Ilya a dad, and why hadn’t he told Shane and how the fuck did Scott Hunter of all people find out before him and—
And what the fuck was Shane supposed to do now?

"We're setting you up with a billet situation," Fletcher continued. "It's pretty common for first-year players, especially international guys. Gives you a chance to settle in, learn the city, have someone looking out for you."
"Okay," Ilya said slowly, not entirely sure what a billet was, but not wanting to admit his ignorance.
He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–
"You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."
The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.
"Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.

Ilya has been thinking about his mother again. Not that he ever really stops but lately...Yes, lately he is thinking about Irina Rozanova but also about Irina Sokolova. About Irina before Alexei or Ilya. Before Grigori Rozanov. Irina Sokolova - the champion figure skater. The world championship title she won. The routine she developed and agonised over and perfected but never took to the Olympics.
And he has been doing something stupid. Something he absolutely should not be doing. But he is one year away from reaching an age his mother never got to see and he needs...something. He’s pretty sure it’s this particular something.
But Dr. Galina has been implying that perhaps it is only stupid in the way that falling in love with your arch-rival is stupid. So maybe he should just give up already and get on with it.

~And from your lips, he drew the Hallelujah
Ilya Rozanov leaves Boston and signs with Ottawa, trying to fight a slow slide into emptiness and find meaning in his life again. Shane Hollander is a lonely, struggling artist who lost his spark. When they meet by chance, they both have to decide what's worth living for.
Or…Shane never gets the chance to become a pro hockey player, so they meet later in life. Basically, they’re both sad boys, but the healing will be worth it (mostly soft fluff, very low angst). More baggage, fewer hangups.
~You see I used to live alone before I knew ya.
——————————————————
“So maybe we would have played together,” Ilya said.
“Yeah. Maybe we would have been rivals,” Shane said, and that got a grin out of him. He couldn’t quite imagine it, but he thought that would have been fun, facing off against Ilya Rozanov. In another life.
Ilya nodded slowly. “And yet here we are, meeting anyway. Maybe we were meant to.”
