Shane makes some changes to protect his privacy. People notice. *5+1 of Shane establishing his boundaries. AU where Shane and Ilya were never caught at the cottage. Hayden Hayden frowned as the door beeped angrily at him and flashed red. 1919, he was sure of it. He’d typed in that code hundreds of times since Shane’s first official year as a Metro when he’d bought the condo and had him over to watch hockey and chirp at the television with him. He knew the code to Shane’ s place like the back of his hand. He must have typed it in too fast, too lazily. It wouldn’t be the first time. Hayden typed it in again, frowning when it beeped and flashed at him again. Hayden knocked on the door instead, waiting for Shane to answer. He relaxed a little when Shane answered, his damp from a recent shower, dressed in baggy sweatpants and black hoodie that looked fleecy and warm. “Hey Hayd,” he greeted, stepping aside to let Hayden pass. Hayden returned the greeting and took off his shoes before he passed the kale chips he brought to Shane. “For you. All dressed for me,” Hayden smiled. “Did you change your code?” Shane led the way into the kitchen, humming. “Yeah, sorry, remind me to text you the new one.” Hayden watched as Shane tipped the bags into two separate bowls, letting him grab the drinks and meet him on the couch. They switched cans and bowls and sat and watched the teams warm up for the Florida vs Toronto game. “Barrett’s a fucking mess,” Hayden said, watching him skate laps. “Tell me about it,” Shane agreed, cracking his can of ginger ale. “Did you see that hit he took from Bennett last week?” “Fuck, yeah,” Hayden remembered. Bennett had cleared across the rink in about three seconds flat to smash Barrett into the boards. Even through the television, Hayden had been able to see the glass shake and Barrett’s head bobble in shock. “I bet it’s his shoulder,” Shane said. Hayden turned to ask him how he knew, but Shane was looking down at his phone and smiling. Hayden knew that smile. “How’s Boston Lily?” he asked. Shane locked his phone and tucked it under his thigh as he reached for his kale chips. “Fine.” “Are you guys..” Hayden trailed off. Shane looked at him with a raised eyebrow, his face blank. “Are we..?” “Like, exclusive? It’s been ages,” Hayden tried. Shane just looked at he television. Hayden could see him twitch, and realised he could hear the repeat buzzing of his phone, sandwiched between his leg and the couch cushion. “Is she sending you like thirty text in a row? Jackie does that,” Hayden laughed. Shane loosened up just a little and nodded. “Yeah. I don’t get why she doesn’t just send one long one.” “I know!” Hayden smiled, thrilled that Shane was sharing something about his mystery girl. “It’s like she has to narrate every thought as she has it.” “Yeah,” Shane agreed. “I’ll still be replying to the first message and ten more come through. And by then, she’s already moved on from the first thing.” “Women,” Hayden lamented. Shane's posture tightened just a little, and Hayden kicked himself. He had been doing so well – Shane had shared something, even if it was the most stereotypical thing about an annoying girlfriend that every man could have said. For Shane, it was huge. Hayden looked at Shane, and for the first time in a while, he was struck by how young he looked. Sure, at twenty six, Hayden already had the twins and one on the way, but Shane had always seem sort of delayed in having a personal life to make room for hockey. It was nice to see him splayed out on his sofa, chips in his hand, talking about a girl as he chewed on the string of his hoodie. “So you guys talk about, like, regular things?” Hayden asked, doing his best to sound nonchalant and like he didn’t care. Shane shifted on the couch a little next to him. “Yeah. I mean, we’re friends, so. We talk.” Hayden nodded to himself. Friends. He could work with that. “That’s cool,” Hayden said, grabbing more chips for himself. “I mean, Jackie’s my best friend, so, I get it.” It might have been too much, but when Hayden snuck a look at Shane out of the corner of his eye, he could see that Shane was doing his best not to smile. Hayden was happy he had Lily, he really was. He wasn’t even a little bit heartbroken that Shane talked to her more than he talked to him.

  3. Admitting how they really feel after Shane's panicked debacle with Rose, Shane and Ilya figure out what being in love without hiding it is like, especially when your boyfriend gets creamed on the ice. “Concussion and a fractured collarbone but…” “Could have been worse.” “Could have been worse!” Shane agrees cheerfully, his brows knotting as he notices Ilya’s discomfort, reaching out his good hand. “Hey, heeey! C’mere!” Ilya sighs, taking Shane’s hand. “Yesss, bet-ter… I’m sorry I didn’t text you last night,” Shane pouts, and Ilya cuts him off, shaking his head and stroking his thumb across some of Shane’s freckles. “No, no, it’s okay, don’t worry about that. How are you feeling?” Shane shuts his eyes. “Loopy. Pretty bored and headachey. Not awful.” His glazed eyes open again and he looks up at Ilya. “How about you?” “Didn’t sleep at all. Worried like hell about you.” “I know, I’m sorry… and I was planning on asking you something last night! I’m mostly pissed that got fucked up.” He pulls Ilya’s hand to his mouth for a kiss. “Will you… come to my cottage this summer?

  5. hayden had no clue why ilya fucking rozanov of all people was in shane's room when he arrived at the hospital, but thanks to his best friend's lack of filter on a hefty dose of painkillers, it doesn't take him long to find out. The hospital room door closed softly behind him as Hayden walked towards the bed. He was frowning, still trying to figure out why he'd had to wait while Ilya fucking Rozanov of all people visited Shane before him. Shane's eyes were half-lidded, glazed with a cocktail of painkillers, a dreamy smile plastered across his face. "So," Hayden started, his voice cautious. "That was... weird. Ilya Rozanov here in your hospital room. For like, ten whole minutes. What the hell was that about?" "Oh hey, Hayden. Heeeeeyyyy-den, " Shane said in a sing-song voice. "He came to check on me. Isn't he the sweetest?" Hayden stared at his best friend. "Sweetest? Shane, buddy, the doctors said you had a concussion, not a personality transplant. That was Rozanov. The guy who plays like he wants to murder us. I don't think he even has a 'sweet' setting." "Oh, pfff," Shane sighed, waving a hand dismissively. The movement was loose and uncoordinated. "That’s just his game face. Like Batman. But underneath? Total marshmallow. He was really worried about me. I wanted to hold his hands to stop them shaking so much, but he was paranoid about the nurses coming in, I could tell." Hayden pulled the visitor’s chair closer and sat down very slowly, as if making any sudden movements might worsen Shane's apparent delirium. "You... wanted to hold hands? With Rozanov? I’m gonna need a minute here." "I thought he might speak to me in Russian," Shane continued, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial, affectionate whisper. "It's nice when he does that. You know how his voice gets all deep and rumbly? It vibrates right in your chest. It's relaxing, like a cat purring. A really big, angry cat." "I'm not sure anything about that guy counts as relaxing," Hayden said doubtfully. "No, s'nice," Shane insisted, his brow furrowing slightly at Hayden’s lack of understanding. "Soft, like a lullaby. I could listen all day. Like the voice notes he sends. You know, the ones you make fun of because they're so long." Hayden paused. "The voice notes? From Lily, you mean." Shane rolled his eyes, a dramatic motion of annoyance. "Yes, from Lily. He sends the long voice notes when he's stressed. We talked about this." "We talked about Lily," Hayden’s voice was faint. "The girl you've been sexting for years. The one you always see when we're - " Hayden stared blankly at the wall. The pieces were suddenly fitting together in his mind, regardless of how much he didn't like the picture they were forming. "Lily... is Ilya. Your Lily is Ilya Rozanov." Shane let out a huff of laughter. "Well, yeah. You think I have two high-maintenance hockey obsessives who text me at all hours? I do not have the energy for that. I mean, sometimes I don't have the energy for one, with all the late nights and the sneaking around, " Shane continued, oblivious to Hayden's spiralling crisis. "But it's worth it. It’s actually really romantic. Like a spy movie." "A spy movie," Hayden repeated, his voice muffled by his palms. "Yeah." Shane shifted, wincing slightly, but the smile never left his face. "You know the grey hoodie he wears? The one with the bleach stain on the cuff?" "I can't say I've ever noticed." "Well that’s his 'Lily' hoodie," Shane said, his eyes sparkling with a secret he thought they already shared. "For when we have to be all stealthy. I love that hoodie. It smells like his cologne and hotel soap. It makes me think of stairwells, or service elevators, or..." Hayden looked up, horrified. "Service elevators? You’re meeting up with the captain of the Boston Raiders in service elevators?" "Well, and hotel rooms, obviously," Shane retorted. "Sometimes my place. Or his. He made us tuna melts." "Tuna melts," Hayden repeated. This was the detail that broke him, he realised afterwards. Not the sex, not the secrecy, but the fucking sandwiches. "He acts like he’s this big tough guy," Shane says dreamily. " 'I am Ilya Rozanov, I am machine' but he takes such good care of me, Hayds." Shane’s energy began to flag as the conversation drained the last of his reserves. He sank deeper into the pillows, his eyelids fluttering. "He called me, you know," Shane mumbled, his voice thick with sleep. "From Moscow. After the funeral." Hayden softened at the mention of Ilya's loss. "He called you?" "Yeah. He was so sad. About his dad, about a lot of things. He told me he loved me." Hayden froze. "He said it in Russian," Shane said. "But I knew. I could feel it. He thinks he always has be alone, but he doesn't. I’m gonna marry him one day, H. We’re gonna get a house and he’s gonna make me sandwiches and we’re gonna be so boring. You'll come visit, right? You and Jackie and the kids?" "You love him," Hayden murmured. It wasn't a question. "Yeah," Shane sighed, a long, contented exhale, his eyes finally closing. "Don't tell him that though, cos we haven't said it yet. He’s my very favourite person. He likes to think he’s

  6. Ilya was used to it, a lot of women find it attractive and sexy when he speaks Russian– it might be one of the reasons why they would hook-up with him. Though, he would never expect Shane to like it too. Ilya had a hunch, but he did not pay attention to it. He thinks it was just Shane being curious or being attracted to Ilya, but the patterns were getting too hard to ignore. It was subtle, very subtle. Not obvious enough for everyone in the room to notice it, but then no one is watching or observing Shane like he does, perhaps that is one of the reasons why he was the only one who noticed it. When Ilya was too tired, too annoyed, too worried, or too angry to translate whatever was on his mind into English, he just let his thoughts to exist as they were. It was easier for him anyway, even after years of living outside Canada, he still can't express himself fully without slipping a Russian word or two. Ilya thought everything was normal, Shane doesn’t mind when Ilya suddenly speaks in Russian mid conversation, but then he started to noticed it lately. Every time a Russian slipped out of him in moments he wasn’t watching himself, Shane would react every time.
