  1. The Montreal Metros are out of the playoffs, and Shane’s just found out that his grandmother has died. For reasons he doesn’t understand, she’s left him her dog, a poorly-trained mutt named after his childhood favorite food. And to make matters worse, the Ottawa dog park where he goes to train Tonkatsu is apparently the new hangout of one Ilya Rozanov.

Shane doesn’t know why his rival was traded to Ottawa, or how he gets his dog Anya to behave so easily. He shouldn’t be so fascinated by Rozanov, but he can’t help but be drawn to him. And the dogs aren’t helping.

  2. Hayden and Jackie exchange a glance. “Have you noticed anything . . . different . . . about Arthur?” Hayden asks. Now it’s Shane and Ilya’s turn to exchange a glance. Shane shrugs. “Not really,” he says. “He’s kind of just like I was when I was a kid. Maybe being quiet is a bit odd for this family, but it’s not abnormal.” He expects Ilya to back him up, but Ilya hesitates. “He does not play like his sisters,” Ilya says. Shane looks at Ilya out of the corner of his eye. Clearly he’s missed something. Ilya isn’t making jokes, which means something about this conversation is serious. “You’re not worried about him, are you?” Shane asks. “No, no, no,” Jackie says. “We weren’t worried at all, actually, because he’s so similar to you. But, well, his preschool teachers pointed out some things and we looked into it a bit, and we ended up getting him tested. And, well. He’s autistic.” or Arthur Pike gets diagnosed with autism. Shane has some revelations. 9/13/2026 Update: I have now poisoned this fic to protect against AI scraping. The real word count is 6,714.

  3. His cottage is devoid of life, hollow of any signs of people. Water droplets drum against the glass panes facing the lake, the low, thick clouds oppressive as the sheets of rain obscure any view past the edge of his dock. It only adds to the feeling of loss, the echo of a misfit strung tight through his veins.

Inside his foyer, he can smell the fading scents of his parents, the stale air of a building that's been closed up for seasons, and the sharp, acrid scent of a loneliness that's clung under the skin since before he became an adult; one that's strong enough he's leaving traces of it behind.

It's a familiar one, a tinge that's clung underneath his normal neutral redolence of the muted tart bite of a haskap berry, oak, and the edge of winter snow that's seeped from his pores since he touched his first pair of skates. The taste of bitterness in the air that makes him grateful and angry and so fucking sad that it's been a part of his life since he was seventeen years old.

OR: After the attempted duo photoshoot that ended with Shane walking out, he finds himself at his cottage, three weeks before the 2014 Stanley Cup finals.

  4. Ilya was barely back from the World Juniors and had barely met Shane Hollander when his hockey career was taken from him. He was so close to escaping everything in Russia, only to be caught by his brother, ruined by his father, and forced to marry Svetlana to escape.

Now he's finally on his own, with his shitty studio apartment, his shitty job as a facilities tech in the Raider's Stadium, and his overall shitty life. Nothing could get worse from here, and he has no reason to think it'll get better. Until he runs into Shane fucking Hollander while smoking behind a club, maybe he could get a second chance with the man he's been secretly crushing on for years?

  5. In Vegas, after the MLH awards, Shane asks to go bare and Ilya goes along with it. Afterwards, Shane, who had realized how he felt about Ilya during those 6 months of radio silence, tries to tell Ilya. Ilya, scared and caught off guard, breaks Shane's heart and tells him to leave.

A month later, Shane finds out he's pregnant. He decides to keep it. He tells the Voyageurs. It goes how you'd expect. They drop him. But he has his baby. While he focuses on keeping his body healthy for the baby, Yuna focuses on finding a team that will take him and give him what he wants for the end of the pregnancy. Only one team will - The Boston Bears.

Things are looking up for Shane. Until he loses everything...again. His world falls apart in the span of a few hours. Again. His mind can't take it and he breaks.

A little over a year after Ilya broke Shane's heart, Shane starts a new season as a newly minted Boston Bear. Will he be able to play with the man that broke his heart and act like nothing happened? Will Ilya?

I still got tossed on my ass the second I went too far over the line, and threatened by the commissioner, and told to kill myself on just about every social media platform because my nightmare that I’d get outed came true. And you, after everything you did, got to come out to a supportive team and fans, get a slap on the wrist, and have your happy fucking ending.”

  8. The Boston Raiders don't know who Jane is.

They only know she lives in Montreal, Ilya sees her whenever they're in town, and she seems to be the only person on earth capable of keeping Ilya Rozanov on a leash.

After two weeks of bag skates, Marlow decides they're desperate enough to call her.

He probably should've asked Ilya who Jane actually was first.

  9. Marleau had a fun thing going on with Rozanov, back in the day - those nights were the hottest of Marleau’s life. Girls and booze and occasional… stuff, between them. It wasn’t weird or anything. But he kinda… misses it? He’s not sure why it stopped.

Until he catches Rozanov with Hollander; all at once, he’s got answers to questions he never dared ask… as well as a whole lot more questions. And an invitation.

  10. “Hello Shane. This is Ilya again, calling about your solar panel quote. Call me back when you are able, the number is—”

Shane pokes the delete button so hard he worries about his phone screen. Every day, this fucking company calls him. Sometimes it’s Elaine or Cyrus, but Shane finds it the most irritating when it’s Ilya. Something about his attitude in his definitely-not-attractive-and-distracting Russian accent makes him sound smug, like he knows he’ll get the sale.

He will never get the sale.

Shane Hollander is never getting solar panels installed. Someone should probably tell Ilya, the solar panel salesman.

  11. They’ve been struggling a lot with time zones recently.

They’ve always texted each other no matter where either of them are, or what time it is. It used to just be sexts and hotel room numbers and deleted messages. Now, it’s also funny videos and articles about hockey and long, rambling threads, only messages with their names deleted. They video call nearly every night. Nothing is really specific to the time.

    Except.

“Good morning,” “goodnight,” sappy and saccharine, sent as soon as they wake up and right before they go to bed. That’s been a thing since the cottage, especially on nights they can’t call. Good morning, goodnight, easy when they’re both on the same continent, easy when there’s no time difference versus a 7 hour one, but Shane keeps sending the wrong one by accident lately, and Ilya teases him because -

    “Shane?”

    “He’s in Russia,” Shane rasps.

  13. “Who are you waiting for? Maybe I can call him and get him here, then we go?”

Hollander’s face scrunched up, and he hummed like he was trying to remember who he was waiting for.

    “Ilya.”

    “Yes?”

    “Yeah. Ilya.”

    Ilya blinked.

     What?

“Yes, is my name. Who are you waiting for?”

Hollander huffed and pushed himself up a little so he could glare Ilya down.

    “‘M waitin’ for Ilya. Roz’nov. Y’know ‘im?”

“Yes, Hollander. I know him,” Ilya said, trying to keep his voice even.

OR: The Voyageurs are in Boston for a game, and Shane is really struggling being in Rozanov's city after he left him on his couch. He goes out and gets drunk. Ilya finds out Shane is alone at a club and too drunk to stand and can't fight the urge to help him out.

  14. Shane twists in Ilya’s arms to glare at him. “You shouldn’t be here if you have a wife,” he hisses. «Who the hell are we - you - married to?» Rozanov barks. Ilya’s attention on Shane doesn’t waver as he responds, first to Rozanov: «Our wife is the prettiest - constellations of freckles that spread in the summertime and big brown eyes like a baby deer’s even when they’re full of murder. Maybe especially then.» He bestows a kiss upon the furrow between Shane’s brows and thumbs the leaking tip of his cock. “Mm, maybe you’re right. My wife is very much the jealous type.” Or: After Shane doesn't get kissed in Vegas, a thirty-something Ilya Rozanov wearing a wedding ring engraved with Shane's number shows up to kiss him breathless in the elevator and give his younger self a lesson in how Shane deserves to be spoiled. (or or: Ilya uses a harmless bit of sexy dream magic to right an old wrong and show his husband a good time.)

Hi everyone! It’s been awhile. Sorry this chapter is late. I was traveling over the weekend and my plane almost crashed, it lost an engine mid-air but thankfully we landed safely and everyone is ok. But I was writing this chapter with the plane wifi so I lost half of my edits and had to rewrite it. Hope you enjoy!

  16. Shane’s ex-girlfriends keep coming out as queer. He’s trying to be supportive, he really is, okay? Listen, he’s an ally! But it’s sort of becoming a problem. For pretty obvious reasons, because people are definitely starting to notice—Ilya most of all.

(AKA, I give Shane the most absurd queer community and convoluted coming-of-age journey of all time and it still somehow gradually makes things better in the long run.)

  17. "Ah, you are going to prison," Ilya says as the door swings open. "I always knew they would get you. It's probably the time you tried to scam our neighbours with very overpriced lemonade and brownies."

Katya rolls her eyes at him as she pushes inside.

"Not everyone can get a million dollar hockey contract at 18."

"We should have bought her an apartment," Ilya says, turning to Shane.

"The website said they encourage people to live on campus for at least their first year. It's easier to make friends!"

  18. Ilya Rozanov has a gift.

He can speak to animals, which has earned him an incredibly successful career as a pet psychic, and far too much information about what people do when they think their pets aren’t watching.

    Shane Hollander has a problem.

His cat, Pork, is permanently miserable. After exhausting every sensible option, Shane turns to the supernatural for assistance.

After their first appointment, Pork grows visibly happier - his cat’s found a hobby and renewed sense of purpose for achieving his only goal: to destroy Ilya for good.

  20. "What the fuck," Marley says, as soon as they're back in the living room; he's one of the loudest voices but is by no means alone—Ovi can hear seven other distinct voices over the poorly contained din. "I thought—hang on, he's cursed?"

"So all the games he played, all the—fuck. What the hell is Montreal doing?" Mamrie asks, like any of them know.

"Do you think Pike and Boiziau know?" Carmie asks, before the rest of his words are overtaken by everyone else yelling about what to do next.
