  1. A guard dog's submission isn't weakness — it's a whole ecosystem built around one animal's safety. Shane learns the shape of it slowly: which hunger to feed, which to starve, when stillness is the only right shape for his own strength to take. Ilya learns something rarer — that being watched doesn't have to mean being hunted. Then it breaks all at once: something Shane's own teammates were never meant to find finds its way into their locker room anyway, and the appetite that spent a year holding itself in check finds out exactly what it was protecting.

Shane Hollander has every aspect of his life under control: his diet, his training, his sexuality.

But when he’s forced to share a room with his rival for the number one draft pick, Ilya Rozanov, he begins to question every rule he thought he had perfected.

Including the one where he would never want a man. Or worse, Ilya Rozanov.

  3. Of course Yuna has a burner account, not just one, many in fact. She uses them for her job as Shane’s manager, to keep tabs on hockey news, the league, rumor mills, and on occasion, Rozanov.

How Yuna comes to care for Ilya through twitter before ever meeting him. AKA Ilya clinches the title ‘favourite son’ arguably before Shane’s parents find out about their relationship.

Nobody has ever called Ilya Rozanov safe. Never called his arms home. Until a hotel room in Tampa where Shane falls asleep and Ilya realizes, maybe he can be someone’s safety after all. If he just lets himself have it.

  5. It’s strictly a business trip. Ilya’s her client, not her friend, and they have meetings with Porsche. She’ll probably see him for a few hours here and there, and she’s content to amuse herself for the rest of the time.

Ilya seems to regard her trip differently.

Ilya Rozanov: Have you heard of Berghain?
    Yuna: No, what’s that?
    Ilya Rozanov: Berlin cultural institution

  6. “ From the moment Shane had met Rozanov’s blue eyes and shaken his hand outside a building in Saskatchawan, Shane’s entire being Knew Rozanov.” “Shane’s very being Knew him. It was a ridiculous notion that Shane chose to ignore at the time, but that didn’t make it any less true.” OR a fluffy schmoopy songfic inspired by I Knew It, I Knew You by Taylor Swift.

  7. Ilya has heard people say that suicide is a selfish act. He's heard people say it about his mother, and it used to make him furious. He’d punched Alexei for it, once, broken his nose when he said, why are you still moping over that selfish bitch, she left us without a thought, even though he knew it was his brother’s grief speaking and not his heart.

That word, selfish, made him so furious, maybe, because some small part of him believed it. Some part of himself, a part of him that he was too ashamed of to acknowledge, let alone to name, believed that his mother should have been braver. Should have been stronger. Should have fought harder to stay with him, to keep taking care of him. Would have, if she’d loved Ilya as much as she claimed to.

He knows now, now that he has Shane, that it isn’t true. He knows it is possible to love someone entirely, completely, with the purest and truest love, and for life to still be unbearable.

  8. If it’s one thing Zane Boodram was sure about himself, it’s that he was prideful. Annoyingly so to his dissenters and remarkably so to his supporters. Pride was engrained into him as a small child, growing up in the streets of Trinidad. It’s how it pushed him to climb the largest mango tree to get the big mango at the top, it’s how he dominated the street matches of football and cricket, it’s how he would walk with stride when any adult yelled his name whether it was out of correction or praise. Pride led him to hockey.

Pride is also the reason he was losing his mind when Ilya’s appearances become less notable and his mood more irritable. Pride was also the reason he noticed that when the Voyageurs were in town and a BBQ aligned with it, Shane wasn’t eating the food he cooked anymore. It was driving him crazy.

Zane Boodram notices that his friends are going through things - his pride pushes him to fix it.

  9. Shane doesn't quite remember when he became Hollander. Somewhere between mites and middle school, people started to refer to him by his last name. But he vividly remembers the moment he realized he was Shane Hollander now. Teenage hockey phenom, someone to look up to. A brand. What he didn't realize then was how being Shane Hollander would make his world seem smaller. There are so many things Shane Hollander can't do.

    OR

Shane is a good son who visits his parents on weekends. Shane Hollander is a professional athlete with a clean reputation. Hollander is a little freak who wants to get railed until he forgets he even has a name. And never the twain shall meet. So why the fuck is Rozanov calling him Shane now?

  10. MONTREAL VOYAGEURS PASS ON HOLLANDER FOLLOWING FINALS INJURY
Despite being projected as at least a top-three pick, Shane Hollander slips to 57th overall after a Grade III ankle ligament tear sustained in the World Junior Hockey Championships earlier this year.

BOSTON BEARS SELECT ROZANOV FIRST OVERALL, HOLLANDER IN SECOND ROUND
Boston bets on two of juniors' most electric players; one a sure thing, one a gamble. The Bears have never minded those.

Shane Hollander did not get drafted to Montreal. He gets drafted to Boston, fifty-seventh overall, after #1 draft pick, Ilya Rozanov. He has a plan for that. The plan does not account for Ilya Rozanov being the way that Ilya Rozanov is.

  12. Shane wants to stay right here. He wants to stare at Ilya forever. He wants to count Ilya’s moles, his eyelashes, his breaths. To memorize every part of him. 13. Shane was still trying to settle Max, cupping the back of his head, pressing him back against his chest. Body warmth, familiar scent—that was supposed to be enough. That was supposed to be some innate thing, some animalistic pull newborns had toward their parents, hardwired in them from the beginning. Shane had read that. He was pretty sure he had read that. It was probably really bad that his baby didn't have it toward him. Or, Shane is not bonding with his new baby.

He’s just about ready to doze off—his ritualistic pre-dinner, thirty-minute nap—when, suddenly, Ilya says, “Huh. Interesting.”

Shane cracks one eye open. “Hmm?”

“Oh, nothing, малыш,” he replies, though his brows are furrowed when he says it. Shane’s even more curious now.

    “No, really, what is it?”

Ilya must lose some internal debate; a deep sigh leaves his body before, wordlessly, he turns his phone to Shane.

The bright light makes him squint, still not used to Ilya and his affinity for both using the light-mode feature and turning the brightness in his phone to a maximum. He forgoes scolding him when, after his eyes have adjusted, he reads: Metros acquires Fil-Canadian Rivera; second Asian player in franchise history after Hollander.

At first he thinks, oh, that’s my name. Shane hasn’t seen his name mentioned remotely near the words ‘Montreal Metros’ ever since he transferred to Ottawa three years ago. Then, and this is when it finally dawns on him, Shane thinks: second?

“Do you have a budget?” Shane asked once, early on.

Ilya looked at him with such patent confusion that for a moment Shane thought that he didn't know the word in English. Then Ilya said, “No, Hollander. I do not have a budget,” voice dripping with disdain.

“You really should,” Shane said, parroting the line he’s heard from his parents so many times before. “It’s important to manage your finances.”

    Ilya just rolled his eyes.

  19. All year Shane had been fighting the desperate creeping desires spreading inside him, hoping they would wither and die in the airless forgotten dark of his dreams and now Rozanov, the only player at camp who might've been better at hockey than Shane, with his newly-long legs and newly-defined abs and his indifferent smirking gaze, was lying (maybe) hard above him, asking wildly inappropriate questions and claiming it was all normal and fine and good? Nonsense. If this was normal, Shane was missing way more social cues in his day-to-day life than he thought.

  20. Being a good father and a good husband turned out not to require anything extraordinary. All Ilya had to do was hold his son upright while he cried. Reach for his husband’s hand when everything else felt fragile enough to break. Explaining why. Explaining it again. Apologizing when he was wrong and letting himself be forgiven, too. Stay—especially on the days when staying felt like a decision he had already, once, been afraid he might not make. Do it again tomorrow. And tomorrow, Ilya learned, was no longer frightening when it looked back at him through brown eyes.
