“He wants doll brushes because he’s seen the girls at the park brushing their plushies with them. Their dolls too, obviously. But he wants to brush that pelt you brought him-”
David sets his crossword book down, giving Yuna his full attention.
“What?”
“The pelt of fur? Looks like a wolf, or maybe one of those big cats?” Yuna says, waving her hand dismissively. “Either way, I don’t think doll brushes are the right choice. We can look into getting him a set of actual grooming tools, he needs to learn that the right tools for the right job are an important-”
“Yuna. Sweetheart.” David interrupts. “I did not buy our son a piece of dead animal as a souvenir from Russia.”

The Boston Bears group chat had sixty-three new messages in the span of three minutes.
His coffee forgotten, Ilya swiped open the chat, scrolling quickly to find the source of the commotion. A link to The Athletic, posted by Jensen, their captain, followed by a string of exclamation points. Ilya tapped it, the headline materializing on his screen like a blow to the chest:
BREAKING: MONTREAL VOYAGEURS’ SECOND DRAFT SHANE HOLLANDER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Ilya's pulse jumped, hard and sudden in his throat. The mug slipped from his hand, not falling but landing too heavily on the counter, coffee slopping over the rim. He set it down properly, his movements mechanical, and forced himself to read the rest of the headline:
20-YEAR-OLD ROOKIE OF THE YEAR STEPPING AWAY TO PURSUE HARVARD BUSINESS DEGREE
Or

Scott felt like his lungs were collapsing. He’d had the wind knocked out of him plenty of times, but tonight there had been no hit, no fall. His heart was pounding and his chest wouldn’t open up to let him get enough air. This had to be a heart attack. He must be dying.
He sank down onto the cold ground, hoping faintly that he’d landed somewhere out of the way. The last thing Scott needed was for Kip to be the one to find his body.

“Yuna,” his mom said, grabbing Ilya’s hand, which was still outstretched. She looked up at the smiling man. “Sorry, I just- I didn’t know Shane had a, uh, a boyfriend.” That somehow got Shane’s focus back again. Air flew back into his lungs as he opened his mouth. Everything came out louder than intended. Was he screaming? He might be. Maybe not? Who knew. Not him, that was for sure. His brain was fried. “No, no, no. Mom, it’s not, we’re not. Rozanov is not my boyfriend!” “Yet,” Ilya filled in. And Shane stopped breathing again. -------- College Shane brings a hook up to his parents house. When Ilya gets a text from Shane in the hospital that just says “I’m so sorry,” he has no idea what to think. He expects the worst, except he doesn’t know what the worst possibly is. Ten minutes later Ilya receives a text from a phone number without a contact. His heart seems to stop as he opens it. “Ilya Rozanov,” it reads, and then on another line, “this is Yuna Hollander, Shane Hollander’s mother. I’m inviting you to dinner at Montoya's at 5:30pm tonight. It is private and quiet. Please be there.” Shane accidentally spills the beans to his parents while high on pain meds and Ilya has to have dinner with them alone.

He drives to the airport with an unshakeable urge to pull over and turn around. He smokes four cigarettes in a row before he boards the plane, then chews an entire pack of gum on the flight to try and cover the worst of the smell.
He exits the airport half-hoping that Shane has chickened out of the whole thing. Then he spots him, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel in the most boring suburban dad car Ilya has ever had the misfortune of laying his eyes on, and he’s so happy to see him that his legs feel unsteady beneath his weight.

So, you like New Yorker? by oxfordcommachameleon
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

“So,” Ilya cleared his throat, the word sounding too loud in the stillness. “Shane tells me you like New Yorker.” Shane’s dad looked at him from where he was rinsing out a glass in the sink, visibly surprised that Ilya had spoken first. “Oh. Yes,” he said after a beat. “I like to read in the mornings. I love the crossword. Do you read The New Yorker too?” “No.” “Oh.” or While Shane is outside with his mother, Ilya finds unexpected understanding and warmth in a quiet kitchen conversation with the man who helped raised the boy he loves.

At first, Yuna thought she saw a ghost. When Rozanov appeared next to her son, at first she didn’t recognize him. She had seen his picture on tv or on tabloids countless times, so it was not like she didn’t know what he looked like, but in those ten years the antagonism between him and her son had grown so much that he resembled, in her mind, a mythological creature. It was like facing a folkloristic monster that you had seen in books and never thought could actually exist. But there he is, standing still behind Shane, wearing a Boston’s t-shirt – the audacity! – his hands crossed in the front like a young scholar waiting for the teacher to judge his polished uniform, in complete silence, while Shane is mumbling some sort of explanation. And then Shane says: “This is Ilya.” ~ * ~ Yuna and David had known about Ilya Rozanov since he first crossed their son's path. But after that day at the cottage, they discover a whole new aspect behind the mask that Ilya has worn for all those years.

But the truth is, Ilya is nervous. or, ilya and david share a moment while shane and yuna go outside. set during s1e6.
