“You know why I got them, yes?” “I know why you think you got them.” “Is our anniversary.” “No, it’s not.” The sound of Shane’s stick blade hitting another puck reverberated through the otherwise empty rink. “I am the kind of guy who remembers those things,” Ilya leaned as close as he dared, snatching one of the pucks and taking a shot of his own before Shane could go again. He let out a pleased hum at himself as it sank into the upper left corner. “You’re fucking not. You’re the kinda guy who gets his roommate flowers to be an asshole, actually. You know, I’ve never met a single other person who’s ever done that.” Ilya gave an exaggerated pout, “You are being mean to me on our roommate anniversary.” “Are you going to do this every fucking year?” • • • • • • Ilya buys Shane flowers to celebrate the anniversary of them living together in their university apartment. Shane finds this a particularly asshole move from Ilya, considering they started living together in September and it's currently January. They spend most of the day arguing about it, until Shane finally comes clean about the deeper reason his roommate's "gift" has left him so off-kilter all day.

Ilya doesn’t think much of his own impulses. He goes to a bar, he finds a pretty girl, he has sex. He catches Sasha’s eye from across the locker room, and then they’re in the same toilet stall, noises bitten away before they become dangerous. Svetlana invites him over when her father is away, and he kisses her on top of her quilted bedspread, hard from the feel of her under his hands and, a little bit, from the anticipation of the beating he’ll get if the Minister walks in on him. She scratches her fingers through his hair afterwards and he traces letters into the skin above her knee.
So when he gets the impulse to buy Hollander flowers, he doesn’t hesitate. Maybe it’s because Hollander is so cute with his little freckles. Maybe because he gets irritated so easily, that flush spilling down his collarbones to his chest. Maybe Ilya just wants to reward him for opening the door after that CCM shoot, or for letting Ilya suck his dick after the All-Stars even with Scott Hunter next door.

Shane had researched many flowers and plants that were native to Russia, and he had settled on two different ones, the fern leaf peony, and chamomile, which is Russia's national flower. He had placed the peony root, and chamomile seeds carefully into a shoebox on the passenger seat next to him, as he drove in silence. He thought that maybe he was doing too much, that he was overstepping. But he would have to wait until the summer to find out.
