Shane leaves professional hockey before locker room homophobia and contractual obligations can destroy him.
Somehow, inexplicably, he winds up on the Savannah Bananas, an exhibition baseball team.
He coaches skating for kids in the off season.
For the first time in years, Shane has fun again.
(He doesn't think about Ilya Rozanov or those two nights they shared together)
(He doesn't give Rozanov his number when, years later, they reunite)
    (Except actually he does)
(It's the best thing he's ever done)

"We're setting you up with a billet situation," Fletcher continued. "It's pretty common for first-year players, especially international guys. Gives you a chance to settle in, learn the city, have someone looking out for you."

"Okay," Ilya said slowly, not entirely sure what a billet was, but not wanting to admit his ignorance.

He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–

"You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."

The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

"Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.

The Bears decide that Ilya should be set up with a billet for his first season. The idea of spending a year living with a man that Ilya is sure hates him is completely terrifying. And yet, it ends up being the best thing to ever happen to him.

Ilya flirts with danger with the kind of desperation of a man drowning clawing his way to the surface in search of air. He knows it'll catch up with him eventually. He just never imagined it would lead to this: getting traded as if dumped in the trash, like his career achievements, his blood sweat and tears and everything else he's given Boston, mean nothing at all.

Or, when Ilya gets caught in a sex scandal with a man while trying to get over Hollander, he changes the trajectory of his life forever.

MONTREAL VOYAGEURS PASS ON HOLLANDER FOLLOWING FINALS INJURY
Despite being projected as at least a top-three pick, Shane Hollander slips to 57th overall after a Grade III ankle ligament tear sustained in the World Junior Hockey Championships earlier this year.

BOSTON BEARS SELECT ROZANOV FIRST OVERALL, HOLLANDER IN SECOND ROUND
Boston bets on two of juniors' most electric players; one a sure thing, one a gamble. The Bears have never minded those.

Shane Hollander did not get drafted to Montreal. He gets drafted to Boston, fifty-seventh overall, after #1 draft pick, Ilya Rozanov. He has a plan for that. The plan does not account for Ilya Rozanov being the way that Ilya Rozanov is.

For one fragile moment, he feels weightless. There's almost no time left on the clock, they can run it out without any issues. He's scored the game winner and Ilya is going to come to his home and complain about the score tonight, will bitch and moan just to tease Shane into arguing with him, before he grasps the back of Shane's neck and pulls him into a heated kiss. The next wave of pain hits and Shane folds forward, falling from his teammate's grasp as he screams.

The problem is, no one knows how to market Ilya Rozanov's (in his own words) sexy Euro masculinity to an audience of white straight men.

He needs the best. And if it happens to be his secret lover’s mother who despises his very existence, so be it.

The decision to invite Carter in his hotel room had been made last minute, and Scott wondered if it wasn't too soon. He had never really came out to anyone, really; no one in his circle knew this part of him except for Kip. And wasn't that the exact problem? He buried himself so deep inside the closet, terrified, that he couldn't even dream of getting out of it.

    Or,
Scott comes out to Carter before the 2017 playoffs' win.

“Why did you want me to meet you here today?” Shane asked. When he’d heard the request, he’d had the same thought as Jared. Was he trying to rub it in? One last chance to retaliate for a long ago rejection?

Shane had almost made it to Rozanov’s room that night in the hotel in Toronto. But when the elevator doors opened, Shane’s feet had stayed glued to the ground.

He’d been so afraid of ruining everything, only to have it ruined for him barely a year later.

Shane does not hook up with Ilya in Toronto. Six years later, his hockey career is long over and he has found a new calling that puts his media training, and his pretty face, to good use.

Consider this a remix of sorts.

Instinctively he tries to jump to his feet and rush to get it, but a heavy weight around his torso and on top of his legs prevents him from moving.
