  1. It only took basically a decade but Shane finally has Ilya in every aspect. He should be celebrating and enjoying it, should be focused on slotting into his new team in Ottawa. Instead he's watching the news cycle with bated breath, waiting for the inevitable moment that his name pops up alongside words like "victim" and "Dallas Kent."

  2. Jake asked if Asher had any family he could contact for him. “We wouldn’t even need to tell them what happened, Asher,” he’d said, like the problem was that Asher needed convincing.

“I don’t have any family,” Asher had said. He’d spoken in that same dead-sounding voice that he knew seriously unnerved people, but he couldn’t help it; he’d still been perfecting his normal-person voice at that point. “I never knew my mom. My dad is dead.”

Jake had deflated visibly but tried again and asked about friends.

Asher had stared at him for a little too long but eventually produced a response after the assistant trainer’s question had spent a moment rattling around his head. “I had a boyfriend,” he’d said. He’d smiled, like a reflex. Asher wasn’t even really thinking of Gabe specifically but rather the simple concept that he’d Had A Boyfriend, But Now He Doesn’t. “Kent kinda ruined that for me.”

  3. Shane and Ilya have done everything right, with years of waiting, planning, and hoping. After too many almosts and not-quites, they go to one more adoption event with no expectations. But one quiet conversation—and one perfect baby—turn “maybe” into something a lot more dangerous: hope. And hope, it turns out, has a way of asking for more than they expected. (AKA: hurt/comfort, so much yearning, accidental family, angst with a payoff, and yes—a hard-won happy ending)

  4. Shane has found a place where he cannot be hurt. There is little enough in it, but what there is is kind: warm lights, a quiet that answers to him, and, in time, a ghost who remembers stolen plums and a husband who waited up for him with the lamps lit.

Shane remembers the husband differently. He listens anyway.

--or, a slight A/U where Shane didn't stay in Montreal after the cottage just because he wanted to or because he thought it was expected of him and those years after he came out to his team had been worse than he lets on

---OR, Shane acquires a Russian duckling, finally sets the record straight with his man, goes full 'protect the rookie' mode when his duckling is checked during a game in Montreal, and learns how to be part of a team again (in that order)

  6. “I want to meet her.” he managed to say through the wave of emotion coursing through him. “No.” Shane said, as if there was no possibility Ilya would ever get to meet his daughter. “You don’t get to decide when I see my child.” Ilya said, trying desperately to keep his voice calm, not wanting to give Shane more reason to believe he was still the violent person he left seven years ago “Yes I do. I am not going to let my child be collateral in the war you’re in with your brother like I was.” “I am legit now. I promise. After you left I have spent the last seven years cleaning us up. We do nothing criminal. I have no connections to Alexei and Russia anymore. Just let me meet her.” “No. Not until you prove it to me. I will not let any part of that life affect her.” “Can you at least tell me her name” “Her name is Masha. Well it’s Mariya, but we all call her Masha.” Or Shane Hollander found out he was pregnant with Russian Mafia member Ilya Rozanov's child and ran away. Seven years later Ilya has broken off ties to his brother and found Shane and his daughter. He wants to meet her.

  7. The phone rings and Shane startles, fists tightening in his hair as the sound grates against him. Ilya grabs the device from the counter above him and silences it, tossing it towards the living room and away from the tiny, careful bubble he's created. He watches as Shane's eyes close tightly, a small huff of rattling breath escaping him.

“How could there be a video?” He whispers, almost so quietly that Ilya nearly misses it. Maybe he wasn't intended to hear it in the first place.

Or: A sequel to Try, Try Again - the assault happened, Shane recovered, but when someone sends a link to an online video, their world is tipped upside down again.

Heed the tags! We get a bit more graphic in this one, again, I don't go into explicit detail of the assault, but it is referenced and opening scenes of the video are included. If you do not wish to do this to yourself because you like happiness, please, follow your heart and click away.

Just over four years after a zombie virus destroys the world as he knows it, twenty-five year old Ilya Rozanov is so rattled by trauma and grief that even when he's found a community to call home, he keeps everyone at an arm’s length. That is, until Shane Hollander shows up looking like death itself.

  10. “How’s your head, baby?” Shane asks, his voice soft and steady despite the lingering fear. “I have never had any complaints.” “Jesus Christ,” Shane sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose between his finger and thumb. He’s smiling behind his hand, though. The relief in his body is still a palpable thing.

  11. The week before the 2017 All-Star Game, Ilya Rozanov is placed on IR. Ten days later, he disappears from the league entirely. Boston says nothing, and for once, a notoriously fickle league closes ranks.

Every attempt Shane makes to find him hits a wall. In one last desperate, life-altering bid to reach him, Shane comes out to the world, only to be met with Ilya’s silence.

By the time the 2020/21 season begins, Shane has nothing left but hockey and regret. He builds a dynasty, guts his life, and pins the last scraps of his hope on the Metros’ newest transfer, the dangerously hot-headed Cliff Marlow.

Stepping back into the public eye after the worst three years of his life, all Ilya wants is to find some kind of purpose. Shane is done with him, he made that much clear. Ilya isn't about to try to convince himself otherwise. He just wants to prove he still has some use left in him.

Fortunately for both of them, they're still fucking stupid for each other.

  14. "We're setting you up with a billet situation," Fletcher continued. "It's pretty common for first-year players, especially international guys. Gives you a chance to settle in, learn the city, have someone looking out for you."

"Okay," Ilya said slowly, not entirely sure what a billet was, but not wanting to admit his ignorance.

He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–

"You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."

The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

"Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.

The Bears decide that Ilya should be set up with a billet for his first season. The idea of spending a year living with a man that Ilya is sure hates him is completely terrifying. And yet, it ends up being the best thing to ever happen to him.

  15. The first sound Ilya hears is a thin, discordant symphony of beeps and whirs. Something vibrating.

The next thing he hears is…wet. A sort of shaking, gargling sound, that feels like the ugliest crying he’s ever heard. And through it, Shane’s voice.

“I’m with him now, mom. He’s— he’s not fine. He’s not. I know—”

Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask.

“Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—"

Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little.

    -
Footage of the last game between Ottawa and Montreal is everywhere; it’s breached containment from the sports world, and now it seems like everyone is baying for Montreal’s blood. Except, Ilya is oblivious. Not exactly blissfully so, but as the fight for accountability within the league rages on without him, Ilya just wants someone, anyone, to tell him what happened.

  16. So what is the plan now, Mr. Spreadsheet?

“Honestly I was kind of hoping your consciousness would just click back into your body once I touched you.” Shane scratches the back of his head.

You treat me like slap bracelet, Ilya complains.

After a bad hit knocks Ilya’s consciousness out of his body — literally — Shane finds himself sheltering the soul of his decade-long situationship in the back of his head. Turns out it’s a lot harder to keep secrets when you share a body.

    (They definitely still try, though.)

  17. It had been almost two years since Shane had stepped foot in the Bell Centre in Montreal. It felt like an entirely different place through the visiting team entrance. Ilya played with Mishka ears for a moment, then sighed dramatically. “Fine, I will go to Montreal.” “What?” Shane’s heart skipped a beat. “I’m not asking you to.” “You think I’m a bad husband?” Or: Shane plays Montreal for the first time, and it goes about as well as expected. 20. “And you’re sure there’s nothing for you?” David says suddenly. “You’re not—you’re feeling okay? You’re not sick? Shane wouldn’t have any reason to think that you’re sick?”

Ilya blinks and turns to him. “I am fine. Totally fine. Better than fine, even, before today.”

    “It’s just—Shane’s acting like you’re dying, Ilya.”

“Not as far as I’m aware,” says Ilya. “And I do not think he would learn this before me.”
