There, in an overhung area that had been initially blocked from view, was what could only be described as a Greek god in Adidas track pants and La Sportiva Solutions. The god was hanging off a purple sloper with his left arm, shaking out and chalking up casually with his right. Shane barely noticed himself taking a few steps forward as he squinted at the grade. V9. Shane watched as the climber matched his hands and then carefully rotated on his toe to dip his left hand back into the chalk bag swinging at his hips. A little puff of chalk exploded out onto the man’s bare lower back, an area Shane had been trying to ignore, as he always tried to ignore the muscled backs of the bros who tore off their shirt as soon as they got in the gym. His eyes drifted upward, taking in the impressive lats, flexing and glistening with a sheen of sweat, and all the way up to the tousled blonde hair...

What the fuck. Was that…? Shane blanched as he realized that he recognized the climber. He wasn’t a Greek god at all. He was Russian. And not a god either, but that was besides the point. It was Ilya Rozanov, the top male youth boulderer in Russia, winner of last year’s IFSC Youth World Championship, where Shane had gotten 4th place.

Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics games are about to start and for the captain of the Russian hockey team, the pressure has never been higher. But the pressure from fans, still bitter over the debacle in 2014, can barely compare to that what Ilya feels inside, knowing this might be the last time he dons the white-blue-red jersey for the event, and hoping it will be worth it.
The last thing he has the time for is his best friend and for the next two weeks, competitor, Cliff Marleau, wanting to know everything about Ilya's and Shane's relationship. And Hayden Pike, who is, for whatever reason, always there.

“You play Boston soon, right? You excited?”

“Y-yeah?” Shane stutters. “It’s always nice to play Boston, I guess. Rivals and all, y’know.”

    Crosby nods. “Just be careful.”

    Shane blinks, confused. “Of what?”

“I see the way he looks at you.”

    “Who?”

    “Rozanov.”

Shane stares, and Crosby stares back, unwavering.

    “I don’t—”

“And I see the way you look at him, when you think no one is looking.”

    --

Sidney Crosby, drunk and lonely, offers Shane Hollander some advice regarding a certain Russian hockey player.

Cliff Marleau has seen too much shit not to know there is something going on between his captains in Boston and on team Canada. He knows where his loyalty lies and he is not going to be subtle about it.
He could ask them about it... or he could just drop hints and watch Shane's reaction. He just wants to confirm what he knew, he wasn't planning on it becoming fun.

    OR

Ten days left of pre-Olympics hockey camp. Marleau knows. Shane suspects that Marleau knows. Hayden suspects something and comes to a completely wrong conclusion.

Invitation to team Canada's hockey camp before the winter Olympic games 2018 cannot come at a better time for Cliff Marleau. A break from the explosive atmosphere in Boston. From a captain with something to hide and even more to prove.
Playing with the stoic Montreal captain Hollander for a while sounds like a fucking holiday to Marleau. Except something must have shifted in Montreal too, because on second look, Hollander seems anything but stoic.

    OR

It's Ilya's last year in Boston. With Shane, they have a secret and a plan. The secret cannot handle Cliff Marleau getting to know Shane and recognising too much of Ilya in him.

Shane is sitting above the covers on the bed, which they clearly made by pushing the two twin beds together. “This is my roommate, Shane,” says Ilya. Shane looks up from his phone and shakes his head as he blushes, “you’re such an asshole.” Ilya says, “Harris asked if beds were made of cardboard.” Ilya gets close to the bed frame and knocks, showing how sturdy it is. “Is not cardboard, very strong. Hard to break.” “Ilya,” Shane says in a tone both reprimanding and chirpy. Or, Ilya takes Harris’s advice and films videos for TikTok while at the Olympic village.

If you’d already decided love was more than enough, that being together was bigger than fear; if you’d already picked each other over everything else, already picked a season to make it known; if you’d exchanged rings and vows and you knew this was forever and—most significantly—no one’s idiot best friend accidentally outed you early with his stupid side-hustle video scheme: would you stick to the plan?

Or, would you play a slightly longer game to make your point; would you wait a couple extra months if it meant seizing the opportunity to go big, go bold, shove loving this much in the faces of the naysayers and the assholes and the bigots on an oh-so-convenient, quadrennially-available global stage?

    ~

Or: No FanMail. No outing. No forced free agency. Just their terms. Just their choice. Just their love.

So hell yes: Shane and Ilya use the 2022 Winter Olympics as their hard launch. How’s that even a question?

Scott Hunter’s gonna be so pissed at being upstaged that bad.

He knows that they voted him into the alternate captain position, but the feelings of inadequacy and being an outsider do more than just linger. He can’t stop thinking about it. Can’t stop thinking about the fact that he wouldn’t feel this way had the country that brought him up not turned its back on him. “I mean,” starts the interviewer curtly, “there are a lot of Canadians who feel uneasy about a foreigner even being on the team, let alone being a captain. I guess what I’m really trying to ask is: why make the switch at all? Just to get around the ban?” OR: Ilya and Shane go to the Olympics together and feelings are complicated
