  1. “How’s your head, baby?” Shane asks, his voice soft and steady despite the lingering fear. “I have never had any complaints.” “Jesus Christ,” Shane sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose between his finger and thumb. He’s smiling behind his hand, though. The relief in his body is still a palpable thing.

  2. Shane is the steady ground he stands upon, the hand that guides him, the very air that he breathes. They’re so entwined now, that Ilya is certain he would cease to exist if ever they were separated. It’s maybe becoming a problem. Or, 5 times Ilya and Shane try (and fail) not to be codependent, and 1 time they just give into it.

  3. All told he got into a couple scraps a year, but nothing to write home about – he didn’t instigate, he didn’t go too far. He kept his head level and focused on what it needed to be focused on: winning the game. Sure, one time he almost punched Scott Hunter’s lights out after a game, but whatever – he was emotionally compromised then, sue him. Mostly everyone assumed that was a weird blip and let it go, and he and Scott maintained enough professional friendliness at league events that everyone figured it wasn’t personal, which it wasn’t.

All of that to say that the more and more the media went on about Hockey’s Golden Boy, the more people forgot that Shane was, at the end of the day, just like any other professional hockey player. He knew how to throw a fucking punch. He just chose not to, most times, for strategic reasons.

It became apparent that people had forgotten this very key fact almost immediately after he joined the Centaurs.

  6. Ilya’s obviously aware that there’s something up with Shane, okay? No one who spent their formative years (as well as their twenties and thirties) obsessively watching Shane Hollander Best Goal YouTube clips could glimpse what was going on with the Metros last season and think that nothing had changed. He asked and asked over the summer months, and Shane denied and denied and denied to the point where Ilya had to wonder if Shane knew there was something up with himself. But that was silly. Of course Shane knew.

Ilya likes to think he’s the Shane Hollander whisperer. He knows about Shane’s dormant exhibitionism kink and how to trigger it without triggering what neither of them like to call an anxiety attack. He knows the difference between Shane's hungry stomach grumbles and impending-stomach-ache stomach grumbles. There’s probably not a freckle on Shane’s body Ilya hasn’t licked before, if he’s being honest. That’s not really impressive or a key to revealing Shane’s psyche or anything, but it’s probably worth mentioning.

Ilya used to think Shane was a bad liar.

He would, after all, notice every time Shane stammered through a falsehood or half-truth. Sometimes he even let him.

Now, Ilya wonders if maybe they weren't built to understand one another. Cosmically destined for one another in a way that others aren't. Mama used to talk about people like that, people made by fate for one another, misunderstandings are natural even with the ones you love; but there are some people that you just get.

Shane is a bad liar. A bad liar to Ilya who he refuses to look at and when he does the shame of the lie is written in every freckle on his beautiful face.

    To others not so much.

  11. Shane had planned the pregnancy down to the week. That was the joke everyone kept making, anyway. Not that it was inaccurate. The third trimester was supposed to land perfectly during the off season so Shane could avoid flying, avoid media appearances, avoid unnecessary stress, and ideally spend the last stretch of pregnancy resting quietly at home with his husband. Instead, the third trimester was destroying him. He was tired all the time. Not regular tired either. Bone-deep, miserable exhaustion that made him want to cry if he had to walk upstairs twice in one day. His back hurt. His hips hurt. His knees hurt. His ribs hurt. Sometimes his skin hurt for reason. 12. Ilya knows that no one loves the same version of a person; his Shane is different to Yuna’s Shane, who is different to David’s Shane, who is different to J.J., or Rose, or Hayden’s Shane. And while Ilya knows he’d fall in love with every single version, he’s happy he gets this one. Happy he gets the Shane who lets himself be trusting, and vulnerable, and honest. It makes Ilya wish he could have loved Shane earlier - makes him wish he could have known him longer. But he’s just glad he gets to do it now, here, like this. Ilya had thought it was dumb, when Galina suggested it. A code word for when his mental health was bad—he and Shane didn’t even have a code word for sex, and Ilya was regularly tying Shane to the bed and slapping his ass until it was as red as a tomato.

“Is there a reason you’re calling me?” Shane asks now, voice echoey over the phone. “Or is this part of your strategy to win our argument?”

Ilya swallows hard. “Constantinople,” he says.

  14. “Wait,” Haas finally chimed in, holding up a hand. “You were so afraid of being caught you bought a building to hook up in?”

    “…Yes?” Shane answered.

Haas went a little pale. “You must have been so scared.” The mood had suddenly changed. No one thought it was funny anymore.

Shane sat up a little. “…Yes? It could have ended both of our careers. Almost ended both of our careers. And not to mention, Ilya still had a Russian passport. It was fucking terrifying.”

Luca’s face fell. “That is so sad. I’m so sorry.”

I'll leave it to others to argue whether the relationship should even be permitted by the league. But vital information was concealed from bettors by failing to disclose when it started. Hollander & Rozanov may have allowed billions of dollars to be wagered under false pretenses.

I really should have known that the people with the absolute most deranged and late-stage capitalism reactions to the Rozanov/Hollander relationship would be online sports gamblers. You got me there. That one's on me.

Halfway through Shane and Ilya’s first season playing together in Ottawa, an online sports betting company figures out how to make itself the main character when it comes to social media’s new favorite topic.

[picture] The middle of the Ottawa-Buffalo game. In front of a net, Ilya Rozanov is on one knee on the ice, flanked by two Buffalo players, stick outstretched toward Shane Hollander who has the puck on his stick.

    CENS WIN

    OTT 5 FINAL 1 BUF

The post-game press line, Ilya Rozanov sweaty and shirtless, a mic held in front of his face.

ESPN reporter: Ilya, what an amazing assist in the second period power play. You were literally swiveling on one knee avoiding two defensemen, and sliding the puck to Hollander to score.

Rozanov (grinning): Well, sometimes you have to go down on one knee for your man, you know.
