Summer, 2021. Shane Hollander is Major League Hockey's hottest free agent. MLH fans and organizations alike must grapple with their expectations: Hollander is not the young man the league discarded in 2017, for better or worse. There is more to his life than hockey, even if he says frustratingly little about his boyfriend, another player known only as Lily.
When the Ottawa Centaurs lace up for the 2021-2022 season with a stacked lineup, failure is not an option. What the world believes to be the newest iteration of a longstanding rivalry just might be hockey's greatest love story.

The sun was shining through the cottage window, painting the room in a golden light. Shane, ever the early riser, has been already up for an hour or so, watching Ilya’s every feature transform in the changing light. The faint amount of freckles that dot Ilya’s face –not the same kind Shane has, but still visible for those who are close enough–, his long, naturally curly eyelashes, his slightly parted lips and twitching nose are all things Shane could never get enough of. or Shane and Ilya spend a lazy day together durring their stay at the cottage.

“I want to meet her.” he managed to say through the wave of emotion coursing through him. “No.” Shane said, as if there was no possibility Ilya would ever get to meet his daughter. “You don’t get to decide when I see my child.” Ilya said, trying desperately to keep his voice calm, not wanting to give Shane more reason to believe he was still the violent person he left seven years ago “Yes I do. I am not going to let my child be collateral in the war you’re in with your brother like I was.” “I am legit now. I promise. After you left I have spent the last seven years cleaning us up. We do nothing criminal. I have no connections to Alexei and Russia anymore. Just let me meet her.” “No. Not until you prove it to me. I will not let any part of that life affect her.” “Can you at least tell me her name” “Her name is Masha. Well it’s Mariya, but we all call her Masha.” Or Shane Hollander found out he was pregnant with Russian Mafia member Ilya Rozanov's child and ran away. Seven years later Ilya has broken off ties to his brother and found Shane and his daughter. He wants to meet her.

“Shit,” Shane said. He grabbed Ilya's arm and lifted it so he could lean in and smell his armpit. The scent was intoxicatingly strong but it was also different than usual. It was subtle, an extra richness on top of the usual familiar notes of almond and tobacco. He would have noticed the change if they'd been around each other more consistently but he was only just getting used to having his alpha's scent all over him again. But now that he knew to look for it, there it was. “Are you in rut?” *** Shane and Ilya are looking forward to their second summer spent at the cottage together. Ilya's rut makes those plans look a bit different.

The cottage is their safe place. Only Shane’s parents have ever visited; only they know the address. If Ilya is secretly smoking and on his work phone at the cottage, Shane wonders how worried he should be. When he asks, Ilya's voice is soft despite his frown
“Vicky said it was urgent," Ilya says. "Something in Russia.”
Normally, Shane wouldn’t ask anything beyond that. But again, they’re at the cottage and Ilya is on his work phone. Shane asks.
“There is a man we thought dead,” Ilya says. “Turns out that he is maybe not so dead.”
Or: How the Russian mafia ruins a perfectly nice stay at the cottage, and how Shane isn't just good at shooting hockey pucks.

Shane doesn’t know how to grocery shop for two. He doesn’t know how to do any of this, really. He’s keenly aware that this was the longest stretch of time he’d be spending alone with Ilya, with any one person ever, outside of his parents.
In a way, it feels like playing house, unpacking the groceries and setting out a set of towels and washcloths for him. It is playing house. This is what it might feel like, to be able to have him all the time. The thought feels impossible to contemplate, terrifying to dwell on for longer than a minute or two at a time.

“No vodka?” Rozanov asks, tsking in disapproval but looking amused. “What then? What does the great Shane Hollander want when he does a good job? What is your vice, Hollander?” “Hmmmm, mangoes,” Shane sighs out wistfully. It’s not a dangerous allergy for him, but it does mean being itchy and sometimes a little queasy for a couple of days after. Really he knows that he should probably avoid them altogether, but with every other restriction he has and with how controlled he is with his life even outside of that, it’s his one little indulgence, a pressure-relief valve of one bad choice to let some steam off at the end of a season, when he carves out time in his cottage when he can make his annual bad choice and enjoy a few days of wild mango madness before he makes himself buckle back into the restraints he usually keeps his life in. He looks up when he hears Rozanov snort. “Mangoes?” Rozanov repeats, tugging his shirt over his head. “Really?” “They’re good,” Shane defends. “Better than vodka,” he adds, pointedly. (shane has food allergies but makes an exception for mangoes) (5 times ilya didn't find out about this allergy and 1 time he did)

“Oh my god, oh my god. Seriously, this is the best. I can’t believe you’re my neighbour. I’m calling it now, Hollander. This right here is the beginning of a friendship that will go down in history.” Ilya is 10 years old when his family moves from Jacksonville, Florida to small town Ontario. There, he forms an unexpected friendship with Shane, the boy living on the ginseng farm across the street. As they grow up and grow apart, their paths continue to cross at high school hockey games, in tabloid articles, and at one particular intimate Muskoka cottage. “Y-Yeah, totally,” Shane replied. “D-Do you uh– do you know who that kid with Rozanov is?”
Scott laughed a little, tilting his head in confusion.
“Probably Rozanov’s kid,” he informed Shane, causing his brain to stall completely.
“You didn’t hear?” Scott asked, and Shane blinked, trying to reboot his mind from the crash that Scott had just caused. “It’s why he took time off,” Hunter informed him. “Found out he had a kid, I guess. Or something like that, I didn’t really get the details.”
Of all the reasons he’d thought of for Ilya disappearing for the past month, this had never crossed his mind. A million different thoughts raced through Shane’s mind. How the hell was Ilya a dad, and why hadn’t he told Shane and how the fuck did Scott Hunter of all people find out before him and—
And what the fuck was Shane supposed to do now?

After the tuna melt situation, Ilya suddenly disappears from hockey for six weeks, claiming some sort of family emergency. Shane showed up to the All-Star game ready to try and fix things, only to be shocked to find a little girl at Ilya's side with remarkably familiar blue eyes.

Ilya makes it eight minutes and nineteen seconds before he finally gives into the urge to speak.
“So…now we just wait?” he murmurs, staring down at the spot where his line meets the water, imagining what the feeling might be like when a fish actually bites on the worm at the bottom.
“Yes.” Shane bites out, laser-focused on his own rod.
Ilya sighs and looks around the calm lake, nothing but the sound of birds and the occasional lap of water against the side of their boat to fill his ears.
“Canada continues to amaze.”

When Shane lifts up from the mat to enter Cobra pose, Ilya has magically appeared in front of him.
One minute nothing but the sunny skies, clear air, and gentle wind.
The next, an intruder.
The coast was supposed to be clear. Last he had checked, his boyfriend was asleep in bed, sprawling out all over the place and mussing up the pillows after a rousing round of Shane riding Ilya until they were both screaming.
For any mortal man, that would be at least an hour long nap.
But truly, there is nothing Shane can do to make Ilya miss Yoga Time.

It wasn’t his first hockey fight, not by far. After decades of playing, it was impossible to avoid the occasional scrum. It just wasn’t something that Shane purposefully tried to get involved in. He wasn’t like Ilya, he didn’t find joy in pushing and prodding at the other team until one of them snapped and threw a punch. When a scrum did break out, he hardly ever joined the fray, preferring instead to focus on managing the refs and trying to get his team out of the fight with as few penalties as possible. When Shane’s fist connected with Comeau’s cheekbone, Shane grinned. -- Or, the moment Shane realized he played his last game as a Montreal Metro and has to come to terms with everything that means after. Featuring Shane realizing he's not as okay as he seems, and Ilya trying to figure out how he can help.

So here he was. About to walk through the door into the empty-looking tattoo shop. Which he had researched extensively and had the best reviews. And he’d specifically called and asked if they could accommodate a private, after-hours appointment. So it would be really rude for him to bail now. He just needed to move his legs...
As he contemplated calling and cancelling and offering to just pay over the phone as an apology for wasting their time, Shane saw someone walk up to the glass door and open it, sticking his head outside.
“Want to come in, or are we doing tattoo out here?” The man asked, startling Shane out of his thought-spiral. He was tall, broad, and a lopsided smirk pulled at his left cheek, dimpling it. Shane swallowed hard.

There were many things about Shane's upbringing in Canada that Ilya found hard to understand. Like why he insisted on hiking into the brush to find the "perfect" marshmallow sticks for a bonfire. To Ilya, it seemed like a lot of unnecessary effort and a high risk of mosquito bites when they could just buy a pack of skewers and be done with it. But, like with everything that came with Shane Hollander, Ilya had learned to love it. And now here he was, years later, the one leading Shane and their kids through the woods behind the cottage on this warm summer evening. Or, Shane and Ilya take their kids on a weekend getaway to the cottage.

Set towards the end of The Long Game. The day after Ilya loses the playoffs and tells Shane he's like his mother, Shane hustles them off to the Cottage. A lot of feelings that haven't been discussed get discussed.
“Moya lyubov, I know we have plans to be very honest with each other, yes?”
Shane pulls away slightly, but he only makes it an inch or two, because Ilya’s still hugging him close. “No, no, do not run away, Hollander. Stay.”
Shane stops trying to move and lets himself sag back into Ilya. Ilya huffs contentedly, “Yes. Good. We have this plan, and it is a good plan. But you said we have time, yes?”
“Forever,” promises Shane, “I’m with you forever, Ilya.”
“Yes,” Ilya agrees, another gentle kiss pressed to the corner of Shane’s mouth, and Shane turns a little so that it turns into a real kiss. Ilya smiles against his lips as he pulls away, “So maybe we slow down? We do not have to share all of our feelings today, okay?”

“Rose called. She flies to LA tomorrow but she’s gonna come visit us for a couple hours today. She’ll be here at 4, gone by dinner.” Shane delivers this news while placing his bundle down by the firepit. He stands and brushes his hands, then raises a smiling face towards Yuna and Ilya. Yuna will not deny she’s excited to meet Rose Landry, but the timing… if Ilya’s fixed glare on the rippling water was anything to go by, it admittedly could be better. “Rose Landry is coming today.” Ilya says, confirmation rather than question. “Yeah, I mean, she’s been so supportive and she’s been keen to see the cottage. I knew she was in the area but she didn’t think she’d have time to come by, but she does, and it seems like a good opportunity for you to meet her, and-" ~ Ilya and Shane steal away for a two night stay at the Cottage in fall. Yuna and David are there for the afternoon when Shane receives a call from Rose, who he invites over that afternoon to see his place and meet his mystery boyfriend. Ilya has feelings, Shane has regrets, Yuna and David have hearts of gold, and Rose, as usual, has what it takes to make a whole lot of male anxiety melt away.
