  1. They’re just outside the club when Shane’s legs suddenly feel like they're stuck in thick tar. He feels sluggish―slow and too heavy for his own body. And all of sudden, it’s all wrong.

He’s not drunk. He knows that now, unfortunately, which means Ilya is right: There was something in his drink.

  2. “Bratva,” Shane says. His accent is hauntingly perfect. “Kingpin, I’m assuming based on how easily you move around. Boston, New York, and Los Angeles.” Shane hesitates and then― "Solntsevskaya. Your family heads it.”

“My father is not a good man," Ilya says, and it's more than enough confirmation for Shane. "I do not admire him or what he made even though it makes me very powerful man.”

    “And the rest of it?”

“All correct,” Ilya says with a smile.

Or: the Mafia AU in which Ilya owns the Russian mafia in America and Shane still plays hockey, but with a mob-boss mother.

  3. The first time that Ilya Rozanov’s face ends up in this news, it is a damning photo―one with both of his and Shane's face―and Ilya doesn’t know if it’s a good thing that he sees it first.

Shane is on a run and then he will shower. His phone is on the nightstand charging because despite the fact that Ilya may head the North American bratva, Shane is the psychopath between them. He prefers to run without headphones in. It’s almost enough for Ilya to second guess his relationship.

Or: How Shane Hollander, famous hockey player, gets outed by a photo of him kissing his very quiet, completely unremarkable boyfriend, but make it a Mafia AU

  4. As far as games go, it isn’t the dirtiest that Shane has suffered through. There are dirty hits and chirps that are a little meaner than usual and the Voyageurs are no better, but no one leaves on a backboard and Shane doesn’t have anything worse than some scattered bruises.

That changes when he meets up with Hunter for drinks afterward. Shane is not unused to irritated fans in rival cities, but getting punched in a bar after a game is not on his list of things to do. Between everyone standing in Scott Hunter's apartment, though, Ilya is the one who looks the most upset by it.

  5. Ilya swallows thickly and slowly drags his eyes up to meet Shane’s. “I hurt you. You are bleeding.”

Ilya’s body suddenly feels heavy. He knows it’s his fault. Nothing Shane says will convince him otherwise. Shane may have insisted that it was fine―that Ilya didn’t need to take the time opening him up like he usually did. He’d seemed eager for it too.

“Hey, it’s alright,” Shane says casually. “I’ll do laundry later. It’ll be okay.”

“I don’t care―” Ilya can’t help but say it harshly, “―about the fucking laundry. I care that I hurt you.”

  6. It starts as an accident.

Shane’s focused, eyes locked on the ice. He isn’t thinking about anything else, let alone his response when an inevitable chirp comes. He doesn’t understand he's done anything different until later in the locker room. Ilya can’t stop talking about some chirp and Shane is only half listening until he hears his name.

“What?” He looks up with a frown. “I didn’t chirp anyone.”

“Shane, lyubimii, love of my life.” Ilya steps forward to press a smacking kiss to Shane’s forehead. “You error-screened Benoit!”

So it starts by accident, but it doesn’t take Shane very long to lean into it. He loves Ilya. The entire League knows they’re married, and it isn’t that hard to believe that a married couple would be having sex.

Or: Five times Shane chirped back at comments about his relationship, plus the one time he didn't

  7. “This is… something more than just a hook-up, right? It's not just me?” He chances a glance at Ilya who is watching him impassively.

“Is special,” Ilya agrees, his voice so quiet that Shane almost doesn’t understand. “Is to me. Different. Better. I think," Ilya says after more prompting, “we do this again. I think would be nice to be together.”

“Yeah.” Shane can't help but smile at the idea. Except― “But not public? Just―Until we figure out this whole professional hockey player thing, maybe?”

“Okay," Ilya agrees easily. "Secret." He presses a short kiss to Shane’s lips. “For now.”

    “For now,” Shane echoes.

Or: What if Shane and Ilya had been a little less paranoid and a little more open during that first hookup? What would their relationship have looked like then?

  8. At some point during the drive, Shane's anxiety spikes in a new direction. All night, it’s been hyper focused on Ilya―something Shane does not want to look deeper at, considering the phone call he was woken up with and the fact that Ilya was, in fact, in trouble. About halfway to Ottawa, however, it shifts.

Zane Boodram knows it’s Shane who is coming. He knew Shane’s voice; was not surprised when Shane answered the phone instead of some unknown ‘Jane’. Zane Boodram knows.

  10. Shane arrives at Ilya’s penthouse with a touch of anxiety and no idea what to say.

Ilya has been ignoring him since the publication of the report that revealed years of doping by the Russian national athletics teams. He may have read Shane’s messages, but he hasn’t responded to any. Shane has no idea how he’ll react to Shane’s sudden appearance at his home, but he has to try.

  11. The cottage is their safe place. Only Shane’s parents have ever visited; only they know the address. If Ilya is secretly smoking and on his work phone at the cottage, Shane wonders how worried he should be. When he asks, Ilya's voice is soft despite his frown

“Vicky said it was urgent," Ilya says. "Something in Russia.”

Normally, Shane wouldn’t ask anything beyond that. But again, they’re at the cottage and Ilya is on his work phone. Shane asks.

“There is a man we thought dead,” Ilya says. “Turns out that he is maybe not so dead.”

Or: How the Russian mafia ruins a perfectly nice stay at the cottage, and how Shane isn't just good at shooting hockey pucks.
