  1. On the twentieth anniversary of his mother’s death, Ilya can no longer avoid what she left behind — a note, and a promise he would understand in time.

  2. Then Scott Hunter looked at him, really looked at him with no panic or consternation or grief, just something heavy and piercing that made Ilya feel like his heart was on the outside of his ribcage. “Be safe out there, okay?”

“Okay,” Ilya said, softer than intended.

In real life, they both turned around and walked away into the night. But in Ilya’s memory, that never happens. They just stand there, eye-to-eye, until the sun comes up and it’s too bright to see anything else.

  4. "In the songs the old women sing, the forest does not offer mercy… it only offers trades. When Anzhelina was fourteen, she walked into the deepest thicket to find the Young Wolf, Ruslan Dragunov. She did not go with tears; she went with a crown of iron and a heart of flint. She offered him a life for a life: she would be the moon to his tide, the lioness to his pride, and the mother to his heirs, if only he would tear the throat from the Great Bear, Grigori. Ilya still wonders if the North Wind blew too hard that night, or if it was Lina’s own hand that guided the Wolf ’s teeth toward their brother Andrei, too. Perhaps he was a branch that always needed breaking. That was the night the girl died, and the Queen of the Fortress was born. She traded her spring so her brothers could finally see the summer."

  5. Instead of taking her own life, Irina Rozanova takes her youngest son and flees to Canada in the middle of the night. It only makes sense for her to flee to Ottawa. Her son really only wants to do one thing, and that's play hockey. So it only makes sense for her to find him a team for talented young players. There just so happens to be another very talented young player already on that team. - He eyes Ilya, a little weary. ‘Hey,’ he then says. ‘I’m Shane.’ Even in the short time he’s been here, he knows enough English to understand that at least. ‘Ilya.’ He says, pressing a hand to his chest. Shane nods. He says something else, too quick for Ilya. All he catches is “play”. It must read on his face, but Shane doesn’t laugh or roll his eyes or anything that the kids at school have been doing. He says it again, slower and then taps his stick on the ice, sliding a puck back and forth between his forehand and backhand. Ah, Ilya doesn’t need to fully get it to get it. ‘Da.’ He says and then he steals the puck off Shane’s stick and takes off.

  6. In a world where homophobia and queer fear doesn't exist, in a world where love can happen out in the open for anyone and everyone, Shane Hollander is still stubbornly single. As the Captain of the Montreal Voyageurs, he insists he's too focused on hockey and his career for a relationship, when in reality, old fears of being seen as "the hockey weirdo" keep him from unmasking. That is, until Ilya Rozanov enters his life. The newly single Captain of the Ottawa Centaurs, after a decade-long relationship ends amicably, is now interested in the one man who won't give him the time of day. So when Shane, while on National Television, tells Ilya he'll have to "impress him" to earn that first date, Ilya takes it as the greatest challenge of his life. What follows is a whirlwind of grand romantic gestures, public flirting, chirping (flirting) on the ice, social media ploys and and ever escalating spectacle. All while the NHL, their friends, their family, their teams, and fans across the continent watch, cheer, and place bets on when Shane will finally say yes.

  7. Irina was always a perceptive woman.

Maybe this perceptive, brilliant woman noticed how Ilya looked at boys.

Maybe that was the final straw, maybe she couldn’t handle the grief of having a son who loved boys. Maybe that’s why Ilya stumbled on his mother’s body a few days after realising he looked at boys like he could love them too.

or, ilya, religion, queerness and trying to do guesswork about someone who is long gone.

  8. Ilya and Shane settle whose name goes first with a one-on-one scrimmage. Shane wins. Ilya finds, to his own surprise, that he doesn't mind at all — and that turns out to be the easier question. The harder one is the middle name he's carried his whole life: Grigoryevich. Son of Grigori. He doesn't want to be Grigori's son anymore. He wants to be his mother's.

  9. “Look,” Shane began, hitting the edge of the basin with the flat of his palm. “I don’t know if I did something to piss you off, or…or what, but you’re being fucking weird. The phonecall? And this? What is this?”

Before he’d even really processed Shane’s words, Ilya was standing directly in front of him, grabbing his lapels, pulling him closer. Then his shoulders sagged and their foreheads met. Ilya could feel Shane shift, moving away, but Ilya kept him still. It felt so good just to have Shane near again. “You would not believe me,” Ilya murmured.

Shane let his shoulders slump in acquiescence. He gave a little shrug. “I’m already having a tough time believing that you’re acting like this.” He laughed weakly, and Ilya envisioned what it would be like to tilt his head just slightly and press his lips to Shane’s. Would he reciprocate? Pull away? The latter. The latter. Obviously.

Or, after Ilya takes the girl from the club in Montreal back to his hotel room, he falls asleep wishing that he and Shane had never been anything at all, and wakes up to a world in which that’s true.

Within a week, Ilya and his family return to Russia, leaving behind nothing but an empty house next door. Eighteen years later, Shane stumbles across a comment on his Instagram that brings back a flood of memories, emotions, and feelings that he’d thought were long buried.

  12. Irina had always been scared that Grigori’s violent anger would be passed down to their sons. She’d hoped Ilya would be different. But things were more complicated than that. Or, three times Irina was called to get her son because Ilya had punched someone. And one time when someone had his back instead...

  13. Ilya Rozanov has been saying I love you into the void his whole life.

To his mother’s cold hands at twelve, making promises she can’t hear. To his teammates through fist bumps in tunnel rituals that cost nothing because they ask for nothing. To a sleeping man, in Russian, because his native language is the only container safe enough for what he actually feels. To a country he is slowly losing the ability to love back.

He keeps saying it. No one says it back.

    Until they do.

  14. This was what tended to scare Shane the most, when Ilya was unwell: the gradual loss of him, despite being physically there. He would go quiet, blank, slow to speak and slow to respond, nothing like the pulse of intense energy and liveliness that sparked in him at his baseline. Shane missed him, when he was away in that place. It was not a place Ilya could always describe, and it was not somewhere Shane could rescue him from, or even join him in for company. So Shane waited, every time, for him to come back. He always came back. That was the only relief in it.

  16. "Oh." Hollander has gone a little red, beneath his freckles. "I am from… French Canada? Québec? Do you know? Very… very small town there, no English, only French. I try to learn, but— is a bit hard."

Ilya feels mildly stupid. He knew, obviously, that they speak French in Canada, but he didn’t know it was, like— some people’s only language. He’d sort of assumed everyone was fluent in both.

    "Huh. Cool."

"Your English is very good," Hollander offers.

    Ilya laughs.

"I mean, yeah— I grew up in Minneapolis."

  17. Aleksei is seven when his father remarries. He is nine when Yulia is born.

If things had been a little different, he would have hated her. He was prone to envy at that stage: restless, anxious, without purpose. Jealousy would have eaten him through and left room for something uglier to move in. It doesn’t, because Yulia loves him first.

Aleksei is nine and furious at the world, and he doesn’t stand a chance. His heart cracks, breaks and swallows her whole.

  18. Shane is adjusting to a lot of things in his life.

It's just a little more difficult than he'd like to comfort his new owner, in a country where he doesn't speak the language, all while trying to maintain just enough of a physical and emotional distance that he can recover from this when it all inevitably falls apart.

  19. “And because—” Ilya stopped. He was not a man who stopped easily, who lost words, whose tongue failed him. Shane did this to him: removed his fluency, made him reach for things that were not in their usual places. “Because, Ilya?” Shane stepped closer, and Ilya could smell him—the scraping tang of metal and stretched leather and beneath that, something faintly sweet—and this, in combination with the use of his name, made him dizzy, weak. “Because I would rather be known by you than survived by you," Ilya managed. “And if I am to be killed, I would rather it be by you than by another stranger.” Shane went very still. “I’m still a stranger,” Shane said after a moment. “Less now,” Ilya answered. ⋆ or: shane, as part of the winter soldier program, and ilya as the son of its creators.
