“Oh my god, oh my god. Seriously, this is the best. I can’t believe you’re my neighbour. I’m calling it now, Hollander. This right here is the beginning of a friendship that will go down in history.” Ilya is 10 years old when his family moves from Jacksonville, Florida to small town Ontario. There, he forms an unexpected friendship with Shane, the boy living on the ginseng farm across the street. As they grow up and grow apart, their paths continue to cross at high school hockey games, in tabloid articles, and at one particular intimate Muskoka cottage. OR: A childhood friends to strangers to lovers AU in which Shane Hollander (up and coming indie rock star) and Ilya Rozanov (brooding artist) take nearly fifteen years to figure their shit out.

Ilya would have been more peeved at how crowded the place was, if not for the sight before him. He leaned on the thick black matted flooring of the boxing ring, half hiding his face in the hopes no one would clock the hungry look on his face as a shirtless Ryan Price and extremely fit-looking Shane Hollander taped down their gloves. Or: Do we need an excuse to punch Dallas Kent in the face? Companion piece to There have been threats and If you're afraid of wolves. August 2016.

There’s a bulletin in the newspaper delivered to the cottage on Sunday morning, a brief warning to locals and tourists alike. Try not to go hiking alone. If you do, be sure to let someone know where you are and when you’ll be back. You never know what could befall you—who you could meet—in the woods! It’s a shame Shane doesn’t read the paper before slipping out in the predawn morning, Ilya fast asleep beside him.

Boston bets on two of juniors' most electric players; one a sure thing, one a gamble. The Bears have never minded those.Shane Hollander did not get drafted to Montreal. He gets drafted to Boston, fifty-seventh overall, after #1 draft pick, Ilya Rozanov. He has a plan for that. The plan does not account for Ilya Rozanov being the way that Ilya Rozanov is.

“Hello,” Ilya repeats, still kind of stuck on those freckles.
“Hi?” the man says.
“Hi,” Ilya says—again.
Oh god, he's said hello three times now. He should literally say anything else. His name, probably. His phone number, preferably.
“Hi,” Ilya says again, because he can’t help it. “I am—”
“Are you Nick?” the man asks, and it comes out as a breathless sound.

Shane could deny it – he could try to pretend the man in the audio whimpering for more isn’t him, that it’s a scam, that it was fake or edited. He could get lawyers involved, or take it to the press before anything leaks and control the narrative himself. But he doesn’t know how much more the blackmailer has, and he can’t risk Ilya getting outed or deported or – well, he can’t risk Ilya.

If Ilya could do it all over again, there is one thing he would change.
It's not a big thing. It’s so tiny, in comparison to everything Shane gives him: all his love and patience and kindness and his mocking smiles on the ice and his quiet laughter in the mornings and long summer days at the cottage and, yes, his body, his beautiful insatiable body that craves Ilya and welcomes Ilya and belongs to Ilya, as Shane swears over and over again. Ilya is so fucking lucky, so fucking amazed every time they touch, still overwhelmed with gratitude that never fades no matter how many times and how many ways they savor each other. It doesn't matter at all, really, that there is one way he's never had Shane, and never will.
But still. If he could do everything over from the beginning, he would ask Shane to fuck him, first.
Or: Ilya really wants Shane to fuck him. He figures out a way to persuade Shane to want it too.
Or: whoops, I over-identified with Ilya Rozanov (as a bisexual of Annoying experience) and then I needed him to get railed.

When Ilya Rozanov goes down on the ice, the Boston Bears are already moving to defend their captain. No one expects Shane Hollander, captain of the Montreal Voyageurs, to be the one who throws the first punch.
Or: the Boston Bears figure out Ilya and Shane's relationship first-and decide that instead of letting their captain move to Ottawa, they'll just kidnap his boyfriend instead. Shane Hollander would make a better Bear anyway.
