  7. "Hayden felt bad for possibly intruding on his friend’s privacy, but he was worried. His 'dad sense' as his eldest had dubbed it, was tingling. It had been a couple of minutes and he’d rung the doorbell twice yet still no answer from Shane. He tried the front door which swung open. Kicking off his shoes and leaving them on the mat, he entered the house, calling out 'Hollzy?' as he went. 'Shane? Bud?' Hayden rounded the corner into the kitchen where he was greeted by the last sight he’d ever expected. Ilya fucking Rozanov. In Shane Hollander’s kitchen. Not only that, Rozanov had clearly just been hugging Shane. Hayden’s best friend Shane, who was supposedly Rozanov’s biggest rival. What the fuck?" --- Does what it says on the tin lol.

  8. Hayden cannot believe what he’s seeing. This huge, intimidating Russian hockey player – who has rookies quaking in their skates with one glare, who never misses an opportunity for a fight on the ice, who Hayden had once overheard during a scrum let loose a volley of swear words so fucking filthy that Hayden was actually speechless – is staring at Shane with the softest, most lovesick look on his face that you’d think Shane had hung the moon in the sky himself. And Shane is staring right back like Rozanov is the sun. - Hayden and Cliff find out. Hayden has just hung up a call with Jackie, and he’s contemplating whether to maybe jerk off or watch the Friends re-run marathon that’s currently on TV when the door to the hotel room suddenly flies open and Shane comes in. Hayden scrambles to sit up in bed, flinging his phone away guiltily as though it was already playing porn. “Hey man, you’re back early.” Shane doesn’t answer at first, turning his back on Hayden to toe off his shoes at the doorway. “Yeah, just…wanted an early night.” Hayden’s brain registers for a second that Shane is wearing a completely different outfit than the one he'd left in- he’s pretty sure he had also been wearing a jacket earlier, but now it’s nowhere to be seen, instead replaced with a slightly oversized black t-shirt. But the thought immediately slips from his mind when he hears Shane’s voice- tight and quiet, and he’s known his best friend long enough to know that means Shane is either really upset or angry about something. But Shane keeps his head down and refuses to meet Hayden’s eyes. “You alright, buddy?” Hayden asks carefully, using the same voice he uses when one of his twins is on the verge of a volcanic meltdown. “Fine. Shower,” Shane bites out, then sidesteps into the bathroom and closes the door. Shane spends an inordinately long time in the shower- long enough that Hayden starts to worry he’s going to use up the hotel’s entire hot water supply. When he finally emerges with a towel wrapped around his waist, his hair is dripping and his eyes are red-rimmed. Whether it’s because he was crying in the shower, or because he was cooking himself in boiling hot water for the last hour, Hayden is not sure. Did she hurt him? Did she break up with him? He wants to ask so badly. He knows Shane went out to meet his secret hook-up. That’s all he knows, because Shane never talks about his love life with him. With anyone. It’s kind of an unspoken rule in their friendship. They’ll talk about anything else – Shane’s parents; hockey, obviously; his cottage; his plans for the summer – but whenever anything comes up about dating or relationships, Shane will change the subject, or skilfully evade the question. And after a while, Hayden stopped asking. If Shane ever wanted to tell him, he’ll tell him. On the other hand, Hayden talks to Shane about everything – when him and Jackie had that explosive fight which stupidly started because he didn’t pick up his dirty socks off the bathroom floor, or that time the twins both had chickenpox, and Arthur wasn’t sleeping through the night yet and Hayden was so fucking tired he thought he was actually going to die. And no matter what time Hayden calls to vent, Shane always picks up, always listens, calms him down, gives him advice. Because that’s just the kind of friend he is. And now Hayden can’t even return the favour. Hayden keeps his eyes trained on the TV- he’s watched three whole episodes of Friends in the time Shane was in the bathroom - and tries to keep his voice casual and upbeat while Shane rummages around in his suitcase for a change of clothes. “JJ texted if we wanted to grab dinner? There’s this place nearby that’s supposed to have amazing pizza.” “Um, I think I’ll pass,” Shane replies softly. “Headache. I’m gonna turn in early.” “You sure? I can stay in if you want some company-,” “No. You guys go. I really just want to sleep.” When Hayden leaves the hotel room, Shane is curled up in his bed, the only part of him visible is a shock of black hair poking out from under the covers. -- Cliff curses loudly, almost tripping over a box of old skates in the third dusty storage room he’d searched in the last half an hour. It’s bad enough the team physio made him come in extra early, three whole hours before the game against Montreal, but his shoulder was still a bit messed up from when they played Pittsburgh last month and they wanted to do some dry needling before the game so he doesn’t make the injury worse. On top of everything, no one told them there was some maintenance going on in the arena, so their usual physio room had been cleared out and the massage tables are nowhere to be found. And now Cliff has been sent on some fucking scavenger hunt to help locate them. Well, the tables clearly aren’t in here, so he gives up and heads back down to go yell at the physio. At this point, he’ll lie down naked on the fucking ice to get his needling. As Cliff goes down the hallway, he passes the away team’s change room, and he decides to poke his head in to see if the tables might be in there. The room is already set up for the Voyageurs for that afternoon’s game, but it’s otherwise deserted. The tables aren’t in there either, and Cliff about to head back out when Rozanov suddenly comes around the corner into the change room. He doesn’t see Cliff right away- and Cliff has half a mind to jump out from where he is and scare the fucker to death- some payback for Rozanov’s usual antics and chirps. Then he catches sight of Rozanov’s face- and well, he looks like absolute shit. His handsome face – and even Cliff can objectively admit the guy is good looking- is withdrawn and there are dark circles under his eyes, like he barely got any sleep. Cliff watches silently as Rozanov stops in front of a stall- Shane Hollander’s stall- Cliff realises with a start as he catches sight of the nameplate. He’s carrying a nondescript black paper bag, and Cliff watches curiously as Rozanov starts to put the bag in Hollander’s stall, hesitate for a moment, then reaches inside and pulls out something. A white T-shirt.

  9. He walked back to the living room, where Jackie and Hayden were standing, having a whispered conversation, Shane’s jacket folded over Jackie’s arm. They stopped talking and turned to Shane as he entered. “Hey, bud,” said Hayden slowly, not moving. “Uh, do you want me to leave?” asked Shane, gesturing to his jacket, panic rising in his throat. “What? No. No. Absolutely not. We were afraid you’d try and sneak out of here, so I grabbed your coat and keys,” explained Jackie. “Oh,” said Shane, letting out a shaky laugh as he ran his hand through his hair. “Good call. I can’t say it didn’t cross my mind.” or Ilya has a new philosophy in how he picks fights, Shane doesn’t understand the appeal of a moral victory, and Hayden is so fucking glad he married Jackie.

  10. “You can prove it? What, that Rozanov is your Boston girl?” Shane nods, and Hayden looks at him with disbelief. “Go ahead, then. Prove it.” He gestures at Shane, urging him to do so. “Fine. I will.” Shane pulls his phone out from his pocket with determination and unlocks it. He opens his messages with Lily and presses call in the top corner. The contact page for Lily fills his screen as the call connects. He turns the phone to show Hayden the screen then puts it on speakerphone. Hayden crosses his arms and watches intently as they wait for the call to connect. It rings four times before the call connects. “Ilyaaa.” Shane says into the speaker before Rozanov can greet him. He ignores the way his mouth pulls into a grin when he hears the response. “Hollander?”

  12. JJ patted Hayden on the back when the video sprung from the collision to Hayden's punches. Honestly he was pretty impressed with himself. He was able to get a few good swings at Marlow in before the refs separated them- but that wasn’t important right now. He could feel good about it after he knew Shane was okay. Besides, for some reason Hayden wasn’t focused on his form while punching. He didn't even notice the rest of his teammates' fighting for Shanes honor. For some reason his gaze lingered on Rozanov. Rozanov who looked pained at Shane crumpling. Rozanov who seemed scared for his rival. Rozanov who wore his heart on his sleeve while skating up to Shane. Did Hayden get punched so hard he started seeing things? - Or, Hayden starts putting together the puzzle of Ilya Rozanov while on his way to the hospital to visit Shane. Too bad he has no idea that Shane Hollander is also a part of this puzzle.

“Lily,” Hayden says automatically. “You know about Lily?”

Something flickers across Rozanov’s face. His jaw twitches. “Yes, I know about Lily.” He raises his eyebrows.

Hayden feels like a complete asshole, all of a sudden. There’s just been too much going on to even think about Shane’s mystery girlfriend. “Shit, I should probably, like, call her, or something? I don’t know this girl at all, but Shane’s been obsessed with her for years. If she was watching the game, she would have seen him get hurt.”

“You don’t need to call her,” Rozanov says, and when Hayden glances at him, he still looks fucking miserable but now he’s rolling his eyes, a much more familiar expression of disdain on his face. “She’s sitting right here.”

  15. Shane is at a sports bar in Tampa when people at his table start talking shit about Ilya. It becomes impossible to keep his mouth shut. Or, an alternative retelling of how Hayden finds out. Shane never really got the point of going out after a game, and he certainly didn’t understand going out with players from the opposing team. Still, he somehow found himself at some sports bar in Tampa, seated around a table with Hayden, J.J., and what felt like half of Tampa Thunder. It was actually just three of them, one of whom J.J. knew from junior hockey. Or something. “—and I swear we just got her to sleep through the night.” Brandon Wheeler, one of the Tampa players, rubbed a hand over his face. “And then suddenly she just started waking up again at 5 A.M.” Hayden winced. “That time’s really rough. Have you tried a white noise machine?” “Darla’s sister keeps suggesting it, so I guess we should.” Shane tried hard to keep a polite expression on his face. Sitting in a sports bar in Tampa talking about babies wasn’t really his idea of a good time. His idea of a good time was to go to the hotel and nap. Or FaceTime Ilya, but Ilya was occupied at the moment. Shane’s eyes flicked unbidden to the game on the TV. The Centaurs were playing at home against the Admirals and, by some miracle, they had yet to concede a goal. They hadn’t scored one either, but they weren’t losing. Ilya popped up in frame, mouthing off to Scott Hunter who rolled his eyes at him, and by now Shane was familiar enough with this dynamic to bite back a laugh. He watched his boyfriend on the screen, surrounded by people who had no idea. He wasn’t the only one watching the game, though, and one of the other Tampa players scoffed loudly. Andy Something-or-other. “Rozanov is such a fucking scumbag,” he spat, turning away from the game again. “I hate playing against that guy, he pisses me off.” J.J. snorted into his beer. “Is there anyone Rozanov doesn’t piss off?” Feeling his shoulders tense, Shane forced himself to reach out for his ginger ale and take a slow sip. It wasn’t the first time he’d found himself roped into similar conversations, but it was his absolute least favorite situation to be in. He hated hearing people who knew nothing about Ilya tear him to pieces. It was one thing when people said bad things about Shane, but there was something so fucked up about listening to people dig into the person he loved most in the world. “Oh, yeah, I guess you’d know better than anyone,” Brandon said, gesturing at Shane with a laugh. “That guy’s been in your face being annoying for years. Don’t know how you haven’t punched the daylights out of him.” Shane just shrugged, not finding it in him to agree with it. A few years ago, he’d have played along a little, just half-hearted insults and laughs, but he was fed up with all of it. “Shane’s a saint,” Hayden said, clapping him on the shoulder. “He wouldn’t punch the worst person you could think of, probably.” Shane rather wanted to punch Andy, actually. There was something about his face. Of course, Ilya Rozanov had impeccable timing and chose that moment to score. Shane sucked in a breath because it was a fucking cool one too, and he watched as Ilya pumped his arms over his head, skated over and crowed in Scott’s face before being engulfed by his team. They zoomed in his beaming face and Shane had to press his lips together to not smile along with him. Everyone else around the table groaned and the goal with the ensuing celebration added fuel to the fire. “I hear he’s honestly fucking disgusting,” Andy said. “Has like three women going and none of them know they’re the sidepiece.” Shane should honestly just laugh. Because it was so obviously stupid and made up shit. But he didn’t want to laugh. He actually kind of wanted to cry because it was so unfair. If they were out, they wouldn’t be saying this. If they were out, he could defend Ilya freely. In the back of his head, he knew they would just say something else. Would say he was cheating on Shane, probably. And still, the anger was building inside him. Brandon nodded at his teammate. “It’s people like him that give the rest of us a bad reputation. Everyone assuming we all cheat on our wives, like we’re all complete animals.” “Yeah, fuck, it’s so annoying,” Hayden said. “I get that shit all the time.” The third Tampa player finally chimed in as Shane was quietly planning his escape. “Probably has a bunch of kids everywhere. They’ll be their own hockey team in like 20 years.” Everyone else laughed at that. Obnoxiously loudly, like it was the funniest thing any of them had ever heard. Something snapped in him, something he’d been holding together with the force of his will and the clench of his teeth. Maybe it was the implication that Ilya would be a shitty dad that finally broke every single resolve. “He’s actually a good guy,” Shane said quietly, but the whole table fell silent for a moment. J.J. looked at him with his eyebrows raised, and the Tampa players still had signs of laughter in their expressions. “You’ve been enemies for like a decade,” Brandon said. “What do you mean, good guy?” “Rivals,” Shane corrected, his hands twisting in his lap. “And yeah, almost a decade. So I know him better than you, then, don’t I? And Rozanov isn’t just whatever you see on the ice or hear from the rumour mill.” “Alright, relax?” Brandon laughed, dismissive.
