  1. Over the summer, Cliff Marlow made the decision to leave the team he won a Cup with, his hometown, and the only place he'd ever known to move to a different country, a terrible team, and basically the middle of nowhere.

And so far, he hasn't regretted it for a single second.

Or: a continuation of i know the sound of your heart showing moments from Cliff and Ilya's first season with the centaurs, a couple of shocking revelations (though they really shouldn't have been), and, of course, Cliff Marlow being the most loyal friend anyone could ask for.

  2. [Edit]: I changed the title because the subtitle is too funny not to add.

The Centaurs win the cup and celebrate late into the night. In the morning, Shane wakes up in an alternate universe - one where he never got hard in the shower and he and Ilya never hooked up.

    ------------

And Shane, not for the first time, thinks even farther back. To that day in the showers after their CCM campaign shoot. Alone under the spray, and confronted with Ilya’s perfect body, Shane’s body reacted. And truthfully, he’s always been quick to react when it comes to Ilya.

But to think… if he could just control his dick, none of this would have happened.

This perfect life he’s living. Married to the man of his dreams. Living and playing in his hometown, with his parents only 10 minutes away. With his sweet puppy, Anya. Celebrating his fourth ever Stanley Cup win. All thanks to one wayward boner.

For a wild second, Shane thinks about saying that to Wyatt.

That’s how he knows he’s drunk.

  3. Shane doesn't quite remember when he became Hollander. Somewhere between mites and middle school, people started to refer to him by his last name. But he vividly remembers the moment he realized he was Shane Hollander now. Teenage hockey phenom, someone to look up to. A brand. What he didn't realize then was how being Shane Hollander would make his world seem smaller. There are so many things Shane Hollander can't do.

    OR

Shane is a good son who visits his parents on weekends. Shane Hollander is a professional athlete with a clean reputation. Hollander is a little freak who wants to get railed until he forgets he even has a name. And never the twain shall meet. So why the fuck is Rozanov calling him Shane now?

  4. A private conversation between Shane and Rose goes viral. No, not that one. Another one. One about unrequited love, undiagnosed autism, and a preference for submission. The fallout will be impossible to handle. Especially because Ilya Rozanov probably saw the entire thing.

  5. The soundproofing in room 1221 is exactly as bad as Shane fears. He and Rozanov can hear every word as Scott Hunter engages in a deeply depressing annual ritual, and decide offering comfort is more important than keeping things a secret.

It sparks a friendship that ends up changing more than just the trajectory of those three men's lives.

  7. In 2016, Shane's career ended; it was also the year he last spoke to Ilya. Nearly a decade later, it’s 2025. Shane is the mayor of Boston, Ilya has just won his fourth Stanley Cup with the Bears, and a celebratory dinner throws them back into each other’s orbit. They’re not teenagers anymore, and no longer interested in almosts or what-ifs. This time, they want to try being partners for real. This is the story of their relationships.

  10. The Hollanders visit David's family for his mother's 100th birthday. It goes about as well as you'd expect. ~ And now was time for a sacred Hollander family (well, really Shane and Yuna) tradition: the debrief. “So, how was that for your first Hollander family function?” Yuna asked Ilya. He shrugged. “I can see why you do not visit often.”

  11. Farah, Shane, and his mom have a statement drafted by the end of the first period of the Boston v. Toronto game. By the time the Raiders are done showering and are pulled for post-game press, everyone with even a passing interest in professional hockey knows that Shane Hollander is an Unrestricted Free Agent looking for a new team.

Shane watched live as Ilya blinked stupidly, took a few seconds to process, and then quickly answered into the mic. This interview would gain millions of views over the coming months and would be cited as the source of the most chaotic social media rollercoaster the MLH ever had.

No one knew it then, but the Great MLH Seduction had officially begun.

Or: Ilya stays with the Boston Raiders instead of trading to Ottawa. This causes quite a few ripples when Shane finally ends his contract with Montreal.

  12. Shane Hollander arrives in Vegas with a question he hasn’t spoken out loud.

It isn’t complicated, exactly. It’s just the kind of question that requires honesty he isn’t sure he’s ready for - about what he and Ilya Rozanov have been doing for the past few years, about what six months of silence after Sochi actually meant, and about whether any of it is worth staying close to or whether he finally needs to go.

He gets his answer in a locked bathroom at the NHL Awards.

Ilya spends the summer convinced that Shane is fine. Upset? Yes. Angry? Definitely. But Shane always felt things fiercely despite what everyone said about him when he had his back turned. He’d calm down over the summer and then he’d be there like he always had been. He fills the silence with discipline and routine and the comfortable certainty that later is still available to him.

    He’s wrong.

By the time Ilya understands what he actually lost, Shane is already gone; and Ilya is left trying to find a way back to someone who closed the door long before Ilya had ever thought to just walk through it.

  13. Shane leaves professional hockey before locker room homophobia and contractual obligations can destroy him.
Somehow, inexplicably, he winds up on the Savannah Bananas, an exhibition baseball team.
He coaches skating for kids in the off season.
For the first time in years, Shane has fun again.
(He doesn't think about Ilya Rozanov or those two nights they shared together)
(He doesn't give Rozanov his number when, years later, they reunite)
    (Except actually he does)

Ilya pulls back first, breathing hard, eyes blazing down at Shane. He drags a thumb across Shane’s swollen lips. “Is your first time with a man?” Shane huffs a wrecked laugh, chest rising and falling fast. “Definitely not.” Ilya’s grin is sharp and almost feral. “Good. I want to hear you.” Shane is two years younger than Ilya and they play for the same team. But what if Shane was a bit wilder, less afraid to experiment sexually, and a bit more of a typical ice hockey guy? Get ready for teammates to friends to friends with benefits to lovers. (Please note that Shane/Hayden are tagged because they’re 18/19 and a little bit sexually curious and I’m a believer in over-tagging. Also from Ch4 out it’s full of explicit sex, fair warning.)

After a difficult car-shopping trip turns emotional, Shane accidentally reveals to Ilya that he’s pregnant. The dealership is bright in a way that feels artificial—too much glass, too much shine. Every surface gleams like it’s trying to convince you of something. New beginnings, maybe. Or expensive mistakes. Ilya has been in heaven since they walked in. He moves through the showroom like he belongs there, hands in his pockets, eyes lighting up every time a low-profile sports car comes into view. Red, silver, black—anything with sharp angles and the promise of speed pulls him in like gravity. “That one,” he says for the third time, pointing at a low, sleek sports car in a violent red. “No, wait—that one. Shane, look at the curves on it.” Shane trails behind, slower, his hands clasped loosely in front of him. He stops beside a dark gray SUV, running his fingers along the door absentmindedly. It’s not flashy. It’s solid. Dependable. The kind of car you don’t have to think too hard about. “I’m looking,” Shane replies, but his eyes never leave the SUV. Ilya notices—and frowns. “You didn’t even turn around.” “I saw it earlier,” Shane says. “It’s… small.” “That’s the point.” Shane exhales through his nose. “It’s impractical.” Ilya laughs, bright and easy. “You keep saying that word like it’s an insult.” “It is,” Shane mutters. They’ve been doing this dance since they walked in. Ilya drifting toward cars that look like they were built to be admired. Shane gravitating toward vehicles with wide back seats, reinforced frames, high safety ratings. Every time Shane pauses, Ilya inevitably comments. “That thing’s massive.” “That looks like a dad car.” “God, Shane, it’s ugly.” At first, Shane just rolls his eyes. Then he stops responding altogether. The salesman eventually clocks the dynamic and wisely keeps his distance. Ilya, oblivious, finally settles on a silver sports coupe parked dead center under bright lights. He circles it slowly, reverently. “This,” he declares, “is art.” Shane stands several feet away, arms crossed tightly over his chest. His jaw is set, shoulders stiff. “It’s a death trap,” Shane says. Ilya waves a hand. “Statistically, that’s not true.” “Statistically,” Shane shoots back, “you drive like an idiot.” That earns him a grin. “You love it.” “I tolerate it.” “Same thing.” Shane doesn’t smile. When the salesman offers a test drive, Ilya doesn’t hesitate. Shane hesitates—but he gets into the passenger seat anyway. The interior is sleek and narrow. Everything feels close. Tight. The door shuts with a solid click that echoes louder than Shane expects. Ilya adjusts the seat, clearly pleased. “Listen to that engine,” he says as they pull out. “She’s perfect.” Shane stares straight ahead from the passenger seat. “She’s a death trap.” “Don’t be dramatic.” Ilya pulls out smoothly, confidence effortless. “You just don’t appreciate good design.” Shane exhales sharply. “I appreciate not dying.” They drive for a few minutes in tense silence. The car accelerates smoothly, hugging the road. Ilya is relaxed, one hand on the wheel, humming softly. “This is so much better than those ugly tanks you were eyeing,” Ilya says casually. “I mean, what were you planning to haul? Furniture?” Something in Shane snaps—not all at once, but enough. “Can you stop?” Shane’s voice rises suddenly, sharp and raw, cutting through the car like a slap. “For once, can you just stop acting like everything I want is stupid?” Ilya startles, foot easing off the gas. “What?” “Stop making fun of it,” Shane says, breath uneven. “Every time I l look at something I actually like, you tear it apart.” “Shane—”

  16. “Oh my god, oh my god. Seriously, this is the best. I can’t believe you’re my neighbour. I’m calling it now, Hollander. This right here is the beginning of a friendship that will go down in history.” Ilya is 10 years old when his family moves from Jacksonville, Florida to small town Ontario. There, he forms an unexpected friendship with Shane, the boy living on the ginseng farm across the street. As they grow up and grow apart, their paths continue to cross at high school hockey games, in tabloid articles, and at one particular intimate Muskoka cottage. 17. “Y-Yeah, totally,” Shane replied. “D-Do you uh– do you know who that kid with Rozanov is?”

Scott laughed a little, tilting his head in confusion.

“Probably Rozanov’s kid,” he informed Shane, causing his brain to stall completely.

“You didn’t hear?” Scott asked, and Shane blinked, trying to reboot his mind from the crash that Scott had just caused. “It’s why he took time off,” Hunter informed him. “Found out he had a kid, I guess. Or something like that, I didn’t really get the details.”

Of all the reasons he’d thought of for Ilya disappearing for the past month, this had never crossed his mind. A million different thoughts raced through Shane’s mind. How the hell was Ilya a dad, and why hadn’t he told Shane and how the fuck did Scott Hunter of all people find out before him and—

And what the fuck was Shane supposed to do now?

After the tuna melt situation, Ilya suddenly disappears from hockey for six weeks, claiming some sort of family emergency. Shane showed up to the All-Star game ready to try and fix things, only to be shocked to find a little girl at Ilya's side with remarkably familiar blue eyes.

  18. David Hollander doesn't walk in on them at the cottage. Instead Ilya gets a phone call that his brother has died and his niece is an orphan in need of his care. Ilya and Shane have to make a new plan to make space in their lives for a toddler.

Shane’s shoulders are shaking like he wants to be pacing or screaming or both but he’s holding himself in place on willpower alone, “You can’t risk being deported, not with a kid, not for any reason. And maybe it’ll be good for you, I mean you’ll need help, right? And she’ll help you? And if they ever suspected, I mean a wife, that’s good, right? Everyone thinks you’re straight anyways –”
“Stop.” Ilya doesn’t mean to sound so loud, so angry, but he’s been through too much in the last twenty minutes to modulate, especially in English, “We talked about this. We had a plan. I would not marry Svetlana.” Because I want to marry you, says the little secret voice inside of him that’s only recently gotten permission to be loud in his head.
Shane huffs, adorably annoyed, “Ilya, marry Svetlana. For your niece. You might not be in love with her, but you do love her, don’t you?”
    “I –” Ilya swallows thickly, “I do, but –”

  20. "We're setting you up with a billet situation," Fletcher continued. "It's pretty common for first-year players, especially international guys. Gives you a chance to settle in, learn the city, have someone looking out for you."

"Okay," Ilya said slowly, not entirely sure what a billet was, but not wanting to admit his ignorance.

He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–

"You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."

The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

"Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.
