  3. “When we play Boston…” The first star had gone to Shane or Rozanov all four games this season, despite them playing on the second line for three of them, but that couldn’t always be the case, and if the excited rumblings of teammates in the Metros locker room about “putting that bitch Rozanov in his place” were mirrored on the Raider’s side—Rozanov’s snort cut through the thought.

    “Then you are mine. Easy.”

Shane Hollander is a man who thrives on structure, routine, the solid ground of a ten-year plan. Ilya likes that about him, likes the embracing squeeze of having a life organized in tandem with Shane.

No one would call Ilya a man who thrives on structure. But it’s there, if not in his DNA then in the patterns of his brain. A call-and-response of: they do this, I do that.

When Ilya’s life is flayed open for the world to dissect, how will they push-and-pull their way back towards what was once a well-organized life?

“I thought we could go through the fixtures and figure out what days we’ll be in the same cities this season, or when either of us have a couple of days off in a row. Maybe make a shared calendar, so we c—”

“A sex calendar? Your parents are arriving in thirty minutes, and you are proposing making a sex calendar?” Oh, this was delicious. He’d be able to eat out on this for years, if Shane was willing to give him that long.

“It’s not a sex calendar! It’s just … when we might be able to see each other,” he finished, already sounding defeated.

“And what are you planning on doing when we are seeing each other? Not fucking?”

  5. After Shane’s kidnapping, Ilya vows he’ll never let anybody touch Shane again. The voice in his mind that sounds like his mother—her face lost to time, now even her voice fading away—urges him to leave the family business and embrace Shane as an honest man. The voice that sounds like his father’s tells him to lock up his heart and throw away the key. That way, nobody can hurt him again. (Or: after Shane is kidnapped and almost killed, Ilya chooses a different path. He’s as much his father’s son as he is his mother’s, after all.)

  6. Some things, once spoken, cannot be undone. David Hollander is sure he taught his son that. But when Ilya Rozanov and David have been getting along better than well, and Shane unwittingly fractures their efforts, leaving Ilya heavy under a loneliness the boy cannot quite name, David doesn't understand where he went wrong.

  7. He can see the silver car slowly start to back out of the spot next to Shane’s dumb practical British jeep and he runs, barefoot on the gravel, he doesn't think, he has no idea what he’s going to do, what his plan is, he just knows he needs to stop Shane's dad from leaving.

He clearly doesn't see him, but Ilya can hear the parking sensor go off inside the car as he throws himself around the side of it and up to the driver's side window, hands pressing on the glass and the door.

For a moment it's just Ilya's heavy breathing and a man behind a window looking at him like he's something to be scared of.

    The car window rolls down.

"Please." Ilya finds himself saying, and he can tell it isn't what David was expecting to hear. "Don't leave."

OR: what if Ilya ran after David when he walked in on them in episode 6?

  8. Ilya Rozanov has spent ten years circling Shane Hollander. Ten years of hotel rooms and secret phone calls. Ten years of pretending he doesn't feel it, doesn't need it, doesn't wake up reaching for someone who's already gone. Ten years convincing himself he's not good enough. That he's not worth it.

Then a plane needs to make an emergency landing near Montreal, and Yuna Hollander is on it.

So when Shane calls him from a bathroom floor, unable to breathe, Ilya stops pretending.

After five hundred miles of frozen highway, three and a half hours of driving like a man possessed, a hospital waiting room full of people who have every reason to hate him, and a boy who looks at him like he's something worth keeping, Ilya may have learned a thing or two about what it means to be loved—and to let himself love freely.

  10. The scene that greets him in Shane’s living room is at first much tamer than expected, and then wildly horrifying.

Tails, standing in front of the bookshelf, is cradling a decorative wooden box in one arm. In his other hand, there’s a bottle of something.

It’s a grey squeeze tube with boxy white lettering. There’s something familiar about it. It takes Hayden a second to place, and then he blurts, “Fuck.”

    Because it’s lube.

Or: Shane's teammates find his lube. It doesn't go the way Hayden expects.

  12. Seb loved Hammer. The only reason they weren’t together together yet, in Seb’s honest opinion, was the NHL.

  13. On very bad nights, Lyosha lets himself look. He pulls up KHL scores, reads articles about Dynamo’s powerplay. After a while, he wanders into articles about ex-KHL players who play for the MLH now. He’s a Dynamo diehard, of course, and prefers the KHL, but he’s a casual Valery Garipov fan, and it would not be a surprise to anyone that he occasionally keeps tabs on how the Puffins are doing. It would not be a red flag, to anyone watching.

The Puffins are not doing so well, as it happens. Not like another team, that leads the league and dominates conversations, to the point that even articles about the Puffins can’t help talking about them. To the point that sometimes, sometimes, there are even stray pictures. Nothing that Lyosha will ever linger on. He is his father’s son. He lives in Moscow. He has a daughter who is fifteen.

The thing is, Shane is not stupid. He learned a thing or two from his last relapse. It had been a mess, dealing with Ilya and healing the wound. It wasn’t worth the trouble, he told himself. But what if it was? What if it is? He knows his body and mind is tricking him, the way it remembers the relief and not the complications. He can’t make sense of it because the memory of the pain and the airiness and the break from everything is so, so strong in his mind it kind of overpowers everything else. Or: Shane doesn't want to keep secrets from Ilya.

  15. Shane watches Ilya shove a hand through his hair, waits for him to meet his eyes. “You pretend to want things, pretend I can have things that we both know you won’t let me have,” he says, his newfound self-esteem carrying him past the point of no return. He wishes he’d never discovered it, because it’s making Ilya’s face do something awful.

“Oh, you mean I hurt your feelings?”

Close enough, Shane supposes, his chest aching again. He goes to lift his hand again, sees Ilya zero in on the movement, doesn’t. “I guess so.”

Ilya scoffs, mean and sharp. “So sorry, Hollander, I didn’t mean to make you get so emotional about a casual fuck.”
Asshole. So many times he has lobbed the word at Ilya in exasperation, reluctant affection and disbelief, but now he thinks it with vitriolic anger. “I think you should go.”

Shane finally decides that Ilya's ability to weaponise sex isn't enough for him anymore. Ilya doesn't take it well, but Shane holds firm. Then they start to text about it. Sort of.

  17. Shane is boring the way a sniper is boring. Boring the way a glacier is boring. Very slow, very quiet, very inevitable, and then suddenly you're kinda fucked.

Or, Ilya deserves a medal for the number of lives he's saved with the power of his dick and the ability to fuck the concept of revenge out of his husband's mind.

  20. The first time Hayden asks himself if Shane Hollander is gay, he’s drunk and stupid, and it isn’t even about Shane. He’s just being maudlin, the buzz of mid-shelf tequila turned sour after he stopped a girl getting too handsy with him on the dancefloor. She’d looked at him like he was crazy.

    OR

Five times Hayden asks himself if Shane is gay and one time it's pretty fucking obvious. Because he walks in on them.
