  1. After his life came crumbling down last season, Shane is healing. He's married to the love of his life, everyone knows, and he can finally lay claim to the man he once called his rival.
He didn't realize that his new rival would take the form of some busty blonde model from LA, though.

  2. “What do you want, Rozanov?”

Once upon a time, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov had been something of fated rivals. And then. Rozanov's national team crashed and burned in the 2014 Olympics in his own country. Shortly thereafter, he requested a trade to a Canadian team without much explanation, and by the end of the season, he was playing for Ottawa. Years of buildup and progress thrown away. The rivalry lost its luster after that, with Rozanov hardly a competition.

Now, Rozanov was looking at Shane as if they shared a private joke. “I have, ah, Marly, what's the word? Proposition? Proposal?”

“Business offer,” groaned Marlow, drawing his eyebrows together.

“That,” Rozanov smirked. “Let's sit down, Hollander. Hear me out.”

Or: Shane and Ilya never started hooking up. Several years into their career, some things are very different. At an All-Star game, the only out and proud player in the MLH approaches Shane with the suggestion to start a charity together. It's the beginning of something life changing.

  3. “I might be busy having sex with Troy,” Ilya said tightly.

Ilya makes a joke about having sex with Troy. What he doesn't know is how deeply the joke hurt Shane. Two days and many unanswered calls later, they finally talk. And Ilya learns how much Shane has been silently carrying all these years.

"Would you even choose me, Shane?"

    "I already chose you, Ilya."

Or: Shane crashes out after years of stupid jokes about his diet, homophobic slurs thrown at him, racist environment, and one unfortunate joke about Troy Barrett.

  5. “I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a while,” Wiebe admitted. “Though originally I was going to reach out to an actress. Get a nice, pretty, girl next door type on his arm for a year or so. Straighten out his image just enough to get him back to ‘loveable bad boy’ instead of 'on the edge of being cancelled‘. But hey, now I can kill two birds with one stone!”

Shane Hollander is a working actor in need of some exposure to get his big break. Ilya Rozanov is an international rock star in need of a reputation boost after his latest scandal. The powers that be think a PR relationship between the two will get everyone what they want.

So begins a year long, very public romance as Hollywood's latest young 'it' couple. Can Shane survive the scrutiny that comes with fame in exchange for a shot at success? Can Ilya keep it together long enough to fulfill the contract? And will either of them make it to the end date without a broken heart?

  6. There were things about Shane Hollander that existed only in the dark, and those things were most of him.

or; a moment of vulnerability at a team gathering turns into a viral scandal overnight when a video of Shane coming out is leaked to the press.

Suddenly, everyone is watching. Everyone is talking. Everyone is judging.

It all goes to hell—until maybe it doesn't.

  7. After a viral photo outs Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov while they're still busy pretending their years-long situationship is mostly just sex, the fallout gets complicated fast. The world reacts badly. Their teams react worse. Ilya's future in North America starts to look alarmingly fragile, and Shane, who has never met a disaster he didn't try to control into submission, throws himself into fixing what can still be fixed.

Ilya has spent his whole life being wanted for the wrong reasons and discarded for the right ones. Shane has spent his whole life believing that if he is careful enough, good enough, controlled enough, he can keep disaster from reaching the people he loves.

A practical solution emerges, then a house, then rings.

Somehow, by the time they say their vows, both of them are certain they are the only one who means them.

  9. Listen. Shane knew it was dumb to feel anything like jealousy over this stupid game. It was a stupid game when it didn't involve Ilya, and it was even stupider when it did. He should tune them out and leave them to it, like he always did.

But nobody was having sex with Ilya but him. Nobody else was even thinking about it.

Or - The Montreal Metros like to play Would You Rather. For some reason, sex with Ilya comes up a lot.

  10. “Shit,” Hunter said, eyes wide. He shot a glance up and down the hallway and held up his hands in the universal sign of “calm down.”
“I can pretend I didn’t see anything,” he said quickly.
“There’s nothing-“ But Shane was losing the ability to speak. His throat was closing up, his vision darkening, his heart feeling like it was being squeezed by barb wire.

What if Scott Hunter caught Shane sneaking out of Ilya's room? What if this change meant Shane had someone to talk to, and then the number of people in his corner kept expanding?

A what-if homophobia can be fixed by a Swedish hockey coach and rational argument. Featuring accidental cock-blocker Hayden, better communication skills, good Montreal team mates, coming outs, drinking games, and canon divergence.

  11. The Montreal Metros are out of the playoffs, and Shane’s just found out that his grandmother has died. For reasons he doesn’t understand, she’s left him her dog, a poorly-trained mutt named after his childhood favorite food. And to make matters worse, the Ottawa dog park where he goes to train Tonkatsu is apparently the new hangout of one Ilya Rozanov.

Shane doesn’t know why his rival was traded to Ottawa, or how he gets his dog Anya to behave so easily. He shouldn’t be so fascinated by Rozanov, but he can’t help but be drawn to him. And the dogs aren’t helping.

I still got tossed on my ass the second I went too far over the line, and threatened by the commissioner, and told to kill myself on just about every social media platform because my nightmare that I’d get outed came true. And you, after everything you did, got to come out to a supportive team and fans, get a slap on the wrist, and have your happy fucking ending.”

  14. Shane’s ex-girlfriends keep coming out as queer. He’s trying to be supportive, he really is, okay? Listen, he’s an ally! But it’s sort of becoming a problem. For pretty obvious reasons, because people are definitely starting to notice—Ilya most of all.

(AKA, I give Shane the most absurd queer community and convoluted coming-of-age journey of all time and it still somehow gradually makes things better in the long run.)

HE ADOPTED HER AS A ROOKIE???

    @historybuff617
The adoption story is actually pretty well known around Boston.

After he was drafted, Shane flew to Japan to visit his grandparents in Kyoto before reporting to the organization.

On the trip back, he stopped in Paris and met a young woman who was trying to escape an abusive husband.

He helped her get safely to Canada, connected her with organizations that support women fleeing domestic violence, and stayed in contact while she got back on her feet.

When she gave birth by the end of his first year as a professional baseball player, she made the incredibly difficult decision to place the baby for adoption.

    Shane adopted her.

Her name is Sofia Yuna Hollander.

  17. All told he got into a couple scraps a year, but nothing to write home about – he didn’t instigate, he didn’t go too far. He kept his head level and focused on what it needed to be focused on: winning the game. Sure, one time he almost punched Scott Hunter’s lights out after a game, but whatever – he was emotionally compromised then, sue him. Mostly everyone assumed that was a weird blip and let it go, and he and Scott maintained enough professional friendliness at league events that everyone figured it wasn’t personal, which it wasn’t.

All of that to say that the more and more the media went on about Hockey’s Golden Boy, the more people forgot that Shane was, at the end of the day, just like any other professional hockey player. He knew how to throw a fucking punch. He just chose not to, most times, for strategic reasons.

It became apparent that people had forgotten this very key fact almost immediately after he joined the Centaurs.

  18. "Never have I ever checked out my teammates in the locker room." Comeau said, looking directly at him. Shane left his beer exactly where it was and met Comeau's gaze without saying a word, waiting for someone else to break the silence, because surely that had to have been a joke. "Come on, Cap. It's no fun if you're just gonna lie." Drapeau let out with a quiet snort. Shane frowned, genuinely confused. "What?" 19. It occurs to Shane, distantly, that he’ll have to wear the defaced jersey and his sweaty uniform pants if he wants to leave the locker room. He really, really wants to leave the locker room.

His feet won’t move, though, like the bottom half of his body is suddenly made of lead, while the rest of him twists uncontrollably in the wind. His head feels like it’s floating off into outer space.
