  1. Set during The Long Game

When Troy first joined the Centaurs, Ilya hadn't exactly been thrilled and in the moment he had decided to save his phone number under a not so flattering name... which he never changed, that is until Troy, almost a year later and by now close friends with Ilya, finds out and demands for his contact name to be changed. Ilya eventually agrees but of course he doesn't make it easy for Troy, who will have to win a bet in order for his wish to be granted.

Feat a small conversation between Ilya and Shane in chapter 1 and a slight side dish of social media-twitter reactions in chapter 2

  2. Set after my previous fic "The Whole Time", can be read as a stand-alone but it will make more sense if you read that one first. Both are also set post The Long Game.

It's Ilya's turn for his own Wired Autocomplete Interview and, unlike Shane, he refuses to run his mouth... or that was the plan at least... whether he's successful or not, that's up for debate.

Including, once more: lots of teasing, lame jokes, cursing, viral tweets, trending hashtags and one exasperated Shane Hollander.

  3. Ilya had stripped down to a tank top, his curls flat on his face until he shoved them back. He was shivering uncontrollably despite the heat Pike blasted into the backseat. “Tell me where it hurts,” Ilya’s voice was ragged. His hands were chilly as he ran them over Shane’s bare chest, under Ilya’s wool jacket. Ilya was soaking wet; his hair dripped ice onto Shane’s face. “Hollander–” “There should be another blanket—“ “Just fucking drive,” Ilya snapped. He blew into his hands, warming them as best he could before cupping Shane’s icy cheeks and turning his face toward him. “Shane,” Ilya said, his voice cracking. “Open your eyes. Please.” Or: Ilya just needs Shane to not die. Missing scene from There have been threats between chapter 7 and 8.

  4. His outstretched glove hangs there, frozen, as the noise of the arena mutates into a ringing buzz. Then he’s moving, pushed away by Marlow, and then Boston’s goalie. There’s a flurry of movement, a trainer with a towel, more blood dripping onto the ice, and he just. Stands there. Staring.

Ilya is helped off the ice. Shane doesn’t even tap his stick.

Remember when Sidney Crosby caught a puck with his jaw? That doesn't happen to Shane. That happens to Ilya.

  5. Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.

But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.

or: Ilya's father doesn't die during the 2016/2017 season. His brother does.

  6. He's getting good at this game: sneaking his questions between advances, keeping Shane in that warm state of mind where he'll actually answer them, and stifling the panic rabbiting in the base of his skull.

“So, this is thing?” He asks, tilting his head to try and catch Shane's eye. “You are most charming murderer.”

“Don't be a dick,” Shane huffs.

“Me? Never.” Ilya ducks to kiss Shane's cheek, then his nose, then the opposite cheek, pressing their faces together. He can't help kissing Shane again, on the temple this time, before he continues. “I must be lucky,” he says, “to know you are most boring man alive.”

Ilya goes to Shane's place for the first time since discovering he's a murderer.

  7. “Sometimes, when people are very sick and they don’t get the medicine they need, they can feel very sad, and the sickness tricks them. It makes them think they’ll never feel better. They end their own lives so that the sadness will stop. That’s what happened to your grandmother.” Sonya furrowed her brow and took a bite of her yogurt. “I don’t understand.” “I didn’t understand either, solnyshko. I wish I knew the answer. The sickness is very confusing, sometimes.” “Are you or daddy sick?” Ilya has a difficult conversation with his five-year-old daughter.

  8. Shane came through the door with four cases of Pedialyte stacked in his arms. Ilya had asked him to pick up one on the way home. One. "Last time Niko had the flu, he liked the grape one best," Shane said, studying the cases with his brow furrowed. "But that was over a year ago. And his favorite Gatorade flavor right now is lemon-lime, so I figured it'd be safer just to get a variety pack—" Ilya stood beside him and watched him unload the cases. There were times—many times —when Ilya's feeling of endearment toward Shane was so overwhelming, so consuming, that the only way he could describe it was that he wanted to crawl inside his skin and live there. He settled for stepping in close and pressing a kiss to Shane's temple instead. Or, The flu sweeps through the Hollander–Rozanov household. Just as Shane thinks he's the last man standing, he goes down hard.

  9. “I felt…bad. It felt bad. I had missed you so much and then I finally saw you again and you -” Shane cut himself off. “I know you didn’t mean to,” he started again. “I know you weren’t trying to be… I don’t know. You didn’t mean to.” “I didn’t mean to what?” Ilya’s pulse quickened. Shane wouldn’t meet his eye. Shane took a deep breath. “You didn’t mean to hurt me.” Ilya felt the words like a sucker punch to the stomach. He swallowed hard, fighting to keep his voice level. “I hurt you?” ___________ An offhand comment from Yuna triggers a conversation between Shane and Ilya about that night in Ilya's Vegas penthouse after the MLH awards. Ilya knew he had fucked up, but maybe not how much. Maybe now he can make up for it.

  10. "It had never really been in Ilya’s plans to start a Youtube channel for paranormal investigation..."

Ilya Rozanov is the playboy darling of the oft-forgotten ECHL who never quite lived up to his full potential, but he’s also known for spending the off-season hunting ghosts with his teammates Bood and Troy.

When they dare to investigate the tragic ruins of NHL legend Shane Hollander's former cottage, they are expecting to be confronted by a cursed haunting, a vengeful demon, or at the very least... some entertaining Youtube-worthy content. What Ilya is not expecting, however, is to form an inexplicable bond with the ghost of a hot hockey player and discover that nothing (literally nothing at all) is quite as it seems.

OR; Shane is a ghost, Ilya can see dead people, and it's entirely possible that they once knew each other in a past life.

  13. For one, singular, blissful moment, nothing is wrong when Ilya wakes up.

    And then the bubble pops.

With something less like a pinprick and more like a gunshot.

After Ilya is outed he has to deal with being the only openly queer player in the league, being Russian, and being in love with Hollander even after he ran away all at once. It sucks. He does it anyway.

  14. Shane Hollander sends a courtesy text to the wrong number.

    Ilya Rozanov answers.

What starts as an accident turns into a habit — late-night messages, honesty, and a version of Shane that exists without an audience.

Ilya figures out who he’s talking to long before Shane does.

    He doesn’t say anything.

    Instead, he keeps replying.

  15. “I am out for the season?”

    “Probably."

“Are you by any chance looking for a trophy husband?”

    “Ilya.”

    “Yes? No?”

“It’s one season, Ilya, we’re not—it’s bad because you’re hurting, not because—I’m not letting this fuck anything up for us, okay? We’ll figure something out,” Shane says, resolutely.

or, you know what they say about the best laid plans

ilya’s first year in ottawa looks a little different than originally planned, maybe sort of because he ends up spending it recovering a broken leg in his boyfriend’s apartment, but probably mostly because he meets jackie pike

  16. Question: Do you have nicknames for each other?
1 point: No, and I wish we did. 2 points: No, but I don’t really like nicknames, anyways. 3 points: Yes, he’s my shnookums and I’m his pookie-bear!
“What is… shnookums?” Ilya muttered. “And what is this type of bear?”

  17. When Lindsay, the team operations manager, had pulled them into a meeting to discuss the rooming arrangements for the season, he’d been expecting Shane to get flustered, and turn bright red, and stammer out something like we wouldn’t want to make anyone on the team uncomfortable. Ilya, in fact, had just opened his mouth to say as much to her, but Shane beat him to the punch.

“If it can be arranged and doesn’t throw off anything, that’d be great,” Shane said.

Ilya gaped at him. “You want to room together?”

Shane just looked baffled. “What do you mean? We’re married. Of course we’re rooming together.”

    --

Or: Shane says he wants to room with Ilya on the road. He tells the team he wants to room with Ilya on the road. He tells Ilya he wants to room together on the road. But Tanner Dillion is an idiot, and now Ilya can't stop thinking what if Shane gets sick of me?

  19. Ilya's eyes snapped. Something hot behind them. "You think you are better than me?"

Shane shook his head. It was like comparing apples and oranges, he wasn't sure how to even measure who was better. "No, and you know that's not what I meant. It's true, I'm more likely to get called up before you, and-"

Ilya propped himself up, nose now inches from Shane's. Shane couldn't help looking at his lips, flushed from running. To his horror, Ilya seemed to notice, and he started grinning.

"I think I will catch you." Ilya said, casually. "I cannot let you play without me. Would be no fun."

  20. “Rose called. She flies to LA tomorrow but she’s gonna come visit us for a couple hours today. She’ll be here at 4, gone by dinner.” Shane delivers this news while placing his bundle down by the firepit. He stands and brushes his hands, then raises a smiling face towards Yuna and Ilya. Yuna will not deny she’s excited to meet Rose Landry, but the timing… if Ilya’s fixed glare on the rippling water was anything to go by, it admittedly could be better. “Rose Landry is coming today.” Ilya says, confirmation rather than question. “Yeah, I mean, she’s been so supportive and she’s been keen to see the cottage. I knew she was in the area but she didn’t think she’d have time to come by, but she does, and it seems like a good opportunity for you to meet her, and-" ~ Ilya and Shane steal away for a two night stay at the Cottage in fall. Yuna and David are there for the afternoon when Shane receives a call from Rose, who he invites over that afternoon to see his place and meet his mystery boyfriend. Ilya has feelings, Shane has regrets, Yuna and David have hearts of gold, and Rose, as usual, has what it takes to make a whole lot of male anxiety melt away.
