  2. In 2003, Shane Hollander is assigned a PenPal, and gains a friend. A friend who smokes, calls him boring, and gives him ridiculous nicknames.

Across the world, Ilya Rozanov practices his English with a curious Canadian boy whose name he can't fucking remember.

Or, before they were Canada's Shane Hollander and Russia's Ilya Rozanov, they were Cat and Elijah. Shane has no reason to suspect his childhood PenPal is his hockey rival, and Ilya has never even considered that the man he's falling for is also the boy he already fell in love with through letters and postcards.

  3. Lachlan Pucey joins the Montreal Metros as a rookie with all eyes on him. After a year spent in the AHL, developing and preparing for his NHL debut, he's not going to let anything distract him from playing the best hockey he can and proving to everyone watching that he's just as good of a player as his old man was and his big brother is.

Hank Crawford is a second round draft pick that comes into the league after two years playing the college circuit. He's got no one's expectations to live up to save for his own, but there's a lot riding on him making a name for himself in Montreal. It's the best day of his life when Shane Hollander calls to invite him to training camp in September, bar none.

Lachlan and Crawford are fast friends. Hard not to be when they have so much in common, when it's so easy to kill an afternoon hanging out and playing video games beside each other on the couch. When it starts to feel like the only deep breaths they're able to take are the ones they take when they're side by side, on the ice or at home or out in the city.

They're fast friends. Good friends. Best friends. That's all they can be; hockey is everything else.

  4. This is a love letter to the all the millenials like me who played it too careful and forgot to enjoy our youth. Shane and Ilya, enjoy it for me, do good. Fuck it good, fuck it right. Life is too short to live it scared.

    The arena is too loud.
That’s the first thing Shane notices; not the ice, not the lights, not the jersey on his shoulders that suddenly feels wrong in a way he can’t articulate. The sound hits him like pressure, like something physical, a wall of noise that vibrates in his chest.
He’s already bent over for the faceoff when it hits him- skates set, stick down, weight forward. His body is exactly where it’s supposed to be even if his brain is still skidding uselessly, trying to catch traction.
There’s only a split second before the puck drops.
    It stretches.
    He lifts his eyes.
    Ilya.
Young. So fucking young. Is he dreaming? Not worn by years of hockey, travel, interviews and losses and victories that stack so high they blur together. He’s young again; sharp boned, bright eyed, unable to grow a beard to save his life. Bears black and gold instead of Centaurs red. 'If I look down am I going to be pantsless too?' He thought absently, no way this was real... right?

When the Montreal Metros claim him as a "wasted" mid-round draft pick, the rivalry transforms from a professional grudge into a desperate lifeline. On the final night of the 1988 Calgary Olympics, he risks everything, his family, his career, and his safety, to start a new life in the West. Forced into a high-stakes billet under the roof of his bitter professional rival, Ilya must navigate a world where freedom feels like a new kind of prison.

As Ilya struggles to adapt, the crumbling Soviet empire reaches across the ocean, searching for leverage to help pull him back.

  6. 1987. New York Admirals Captain Scott Hunter is fifteen seasons deep into the kind of hockey career most players can only dream of and keeping one hell of a secret. He navigates his life in NYC, intimately aware at every turn that a single photograph or a trace of a rumor could end his livelihood.

Kip Grady has never known how to hide. A grad student and early organizer for ACT UP, he spends his days marching through the Village and organizing mutual aid, fighting for a queer community battling for its life against a devastating epidemic. When their paths cross, Scott is forced to consider the limits of his carefully constructed closet and decide if he is finally ready to stand in the light.

OR: Scott and Kip meet in 80s NYC at the height of the AIDS crisis.

    Additional Spoilers Here

I promise that these characters do not, at any point, contract HIV: Scott, Kip, Ilya, and Shane.

Scott and Kip, as well as Shane and Ilya, will all have the happiest ending possible given the constraints of the time period.

And what if, in preparation for this trip - which Shane knew about for months and Ilya did not - Shane learned enough Russian to get by? Oh and they're attracted to each other but neither one of them made the first move before they're on a plane together, and suddenly they've got to spend 3 months living in the same apartment, in Russia, under the watchful eyes of Ilya's family and a team full of teenage hockey players...

Hi everyone! It’s been awhile. Sorry this chapter is late. I was traveling over the weekend and my plane almost crashed, it lost an engine mid-air but thankfully we landed safely and everyone is ok. But I was writing this chapter with the plane wifi so I lost half of my edits and had to rewrite it. Hope you enjoy!

  11. In room 1410, Ilya Rozanov is ready to walk out the door after successfully getting his 19 year old hockey rival into bed. He knew how to make this moment happen and he knows what they have to be to each other now that it's over. But as he turns the doorknob to leave, he's stopped with questions he never expected. And giving Shane Hollander what he needs in that moment will change everything.

I note which chapters are SFW vs NFSW, because many of you said knowing meant the difference between reading this on your lunch break or having to wait. (Thank you for wanting to read my work that much.)

Covers the first two years of their rookie seasons (which is mostly skipped over in the show/books). Canon divergent from the first hookup seen in HR s01ep01. Most things are from the show but the timeline is a mix of both; Hunter and Marleau are aged up per the show instead of as young as they are in the books. (Also, Shane and Ilya don't wait *two years*, they stick to the book timeline. IYKYK.)

Please note this will the first in a series; you can subscribe to the whole series as well so you don't miss anything :)

  14. All year Shane had been fighting the desperate creeping desires spreading inside him, hoping they would wither and die in the airless forgotten dark of his dreams and now Rozanov, the only player at camp who might've been better at hockey than Shane, with his newly-long legs and newly-defined abs and his indifferent smirking gaze, was lying (maybe) hard above him, asking wildly inappropriate questions and claiming it was all normal and fine and good? Nonsense. If this was normal, Shane was missing way more social cues in his day-to-day life than he thought.

  15. His throat felt thick and Scott coughed to hide the hitch in his breathing. "I’m not ashamed of who I am. I love Kip. I've won a Stanley Cup and made history as the first out MLH player. I think we could win the cup again this year, or at least make it through a couple rounds of the playoffs because our team is incredible. So fucking what I’m inconvenienced by showering last? It’s worth it."

  16. How did he let this happen?

    Shane's not sure.

One moment, he was on the gym floor not staring at Rozanov's gorgeous sweaty body. Then Shane was standing up, but his legs were weak for some god forsaken reason and Rozanov was there, just an arm around his waist to keep him upright, and now...

    Well.

Now Shane's on his knees on the floor of Ilya Rozanov's shower.

  17. Shane Hollander meant nothing to Ilya Rozanov. And the oh-so-perfect son of the major, society’s sweetheart, had little to nothing to do with a Russian immigrant barely getting by, working at the factories. Sure, they have been fucking for over half a decade, but that...that was just fucking. Ilya knew that. It was just stolen moments, in dark alleys and shady motels. It meant nothing.

So why did it hurt so much to see Shane with his perfect, pretty fiancée at the pub?

    or

After hearing about Shane's engagement, Ilya gets drunk and hooks up with a man. But he isn't careful enough, and the police arrest him for sodomy. Shane does everything in his power to get him out of prison.

  18. Kip wonders how long it takes for “having a fight and not talking” to turn into “had a fight and never spoke again”. Currently it has been six days, which feels like an eternity. Kip’s birthday—which Scott didn’t come to—had been Scott’s last night at home before a road trip, and he is supposed to be home tomorrow. On the nightstand, his phone buzzes repeatedly, and he picks it up to see what’s got his group chat so excited. Maybe someone interesting stopped by the Kingfisher.

SCANDAL! HOCKEY STARTS CAUGHT IN STEAMY AFFAIR!
Kip’s stomach drops before he even clicks the link. It’s some gossip website, with an article about how Rozanov and Hollander have apparently been involved going back years and a ton of photos and videos have been leaked. Kip doesn’t want to look but he sees them anyway, and it’s… a lot. He closes the article, feeling queasy.

  20. “I think you don’t hate me as much as you want to. I think you’re curious about me. I think-” Ilya leans in, voice dropping even lower. “I think you watch my highlights. Late at night, when no one is looking.”

Shane Hollander is bred for greatness: son of a future Prime Minister, Canada’s golden boy, first overall pick. Ilya Rozanov is Russia’s answer: the President’s son, cocky and brilliant, everything Shane is supposed to beat.

Their rivalry begins at seventeen with an overtime goal and a blown kiss. It evolves in hotel rooms and stolen hours between games they’re supposed to hate each other through. For seven years, they hide what they are while the world watches them compete, until one catastrophic hit forces Ilya to make an impossible choice in front of twenty thousand people.

What starts as Cold War propaganda becomes something neither of them can control. And when you’re in love with your rival, winning and losing stop meaning what they used to.
