His entire body felt tense as the door was pushed open. He trained his eyes on the floor, monologuing before he could stop himself, “Just so you know, my buddies paid for this dance for me and I’m sure you’re very nice and very pretty and good at what you do but I’m actually gay so you can just- Do what you need to do but I don’t want you to be offended because I’m not as into this as you’re probably… usually…used to…” He trailed away as he looked up, and met the eyes of the very tall, very broad, very handsome man leaning against the doorframe. They stared at each other, and Shane blinked, struck dumb. Or, the night of JJ's bachelor party, Shane is forced into a lap dance he very much does not want. Until he does, and everything changes.

Hayden had known Shane was gay for a while now.
He didn’t want his best friend to live in a world where it felt dangerous to be his true self. He didn’t want anyone to have to live that way. So lately he had been extra sensitive to the homophobia that was rampant in the NHL. He started calling out his teammates who made homophobic comments. He had already gotten in several fights on the ice over the issue. After being so passive on the issue for so long, he wasn’t holding back any longer.
So he certainly didn’t hold back when he heard Shane’s rival, Ilya fucking Rozanov, being homophobic toward Shane.
OR: Hayden is just trying to be a good ally. He accidentally commits a hate crime instead. Oops.

At a bar in Montreal, Shane is having a drink with Hayden after the rest of the team have left, and two guys approach them, trying to start a fight, calling Shane a slur. Hayden tries to be a good friend, but it's not what Shane needs. OR Shane has a panic attack and Ilya drives two and a half hours in the middle of the night to be with him “Don't stay out too late,” J.J. grinned, patting Hayden's shoulder, then Shane's. “We won't, it's way past Shane's bedtime,” Hayden nodded, earning himself a glare from Shane. Shane watched J.J. leave the bar, then turned to Hayden. Though he'd had a nice time out with the team, he couldn't help but notice himself visibly relax. Yes, everyone on the team knew he was gay now, and some of the them had even pointed out a guy in the bar here and there to ask if Shane may be interested, but, with just Hayden, who knew Shane had no interest in anyone but his boyfriend, it was different. “All those guys could have potential, you know,” Hayden grinned. “You might want to consider it.” Shane rolled his eyes. “Come on, stop.” Hayden sighed. “You know I'm joking,” he said, taking a sip from his beer. “But, you know, I also wouldn't be mad if-” The way Shane glared at him again stopped him. “He's good with kids, I'll give him that.” Shane looked around, then lowered his voice when he spoke. “I don't know how I'd ever tell the others,” he sighed. “I mean, I know they'll find out at some point, but...” “It's fine you're not ready. You told them you were gay, that was a big deal.” Shane nodded slowly. “I know,” he said quietly. “I just wish they'd stop trying to find me a guy. They always do that.” “I think they'd try even harder if they knew.” Shane looked at his hands, both wrapped around his glass. He didn't like it, but he knew Hayden was right. “At least they support you. Can't blame them for trying to find someone for you.” “I guess.” He knew he should have got used to people knowing about him by now, but even though he'd told his team mates himself, he still found it strange that now, more and more people talked about it every day. It wasn't like he was the only gay hockey player that was out, thanks to Scott Hunter, and yet, it felt different. He could imagine Scott Hunter put pressure on himself too, but he seemed to be more sure of himself, more confident in who he was. Shane was still working on that. Scott Hunter also wasn't keeping his relationship a secret. “Hey, man, are you okay?” Shane lifted his gaze to Hayden again. But before he could respond, he heard his name, his attention drawn to two men sitting at the bar. “Yeah, that's him.” Shane tensed when he locked eyes with the man that had said his name. They didn't look like they were about to ask him to sign something. “Can't believe he's still fucking playing.” Hayden had noticed too, sitting up straighter as he watched them. “You guys got a problem with my friend?” he asked, calm, but ready to stand up for Shane. “Hayden,” Shane warned. “Yeah, I've got a problem with your friend,” one of the men huffed, sliding from the bar stool and approaching their table. Shane swallowed, his heart beating faster. The other man followed closely behind. “We used to like you, you know,” he said, now directly addressing Shane. “But now we know you're a little f-” “Shut up,” Hayden snapped. Shane's pulse slammed into his throat, too loud, too fast. He didn't want to fight anyone in a bar, he didn't want Hayden to fight anyone in a bar because of him, but he also felt like his heart was beating so fast that it may jump out of his chest. “What? You gay too, Pike?” one of them laughed. Shane had read tweets and articles, even though Ilya always tried to distract him when he started scrolling and reading hate, he'd been booed at games, and he'd heard comments made about him, but it had never been like this before. It was one of the reasons he'd thought about never coming out. One of the men was close to Hayden now, towering over him, and Shane's hands clenched into fists, but he still couldn't move. He wondered if he was having a heart attack. The words blurred. The bar blurred. Voices, shuffling, chairs scraping. His heart was so fast and he couldn't focus on anything else. He gasped for air, but there wasn't enough. “Shane?” He tried to inhale again, but couldn't get enough air past the tightness in his chest. “Shane?” Hayden's face came into focus in front of him, just for a moment, then his vision blurred again. “I can't breathe.”

There’s a sign in front of Shane. It says Welcome to Scott Hunter and Kip Grady’s Happily Ever After in a cursive font that makes Shane think of Etsy. Shane’s stomach churns. He briefly squeezes his empty ring finger. He feels, all at once, like he might cry. Instead, he swallows, and breathes, and pastes a smile on his face, and marches his ass down to Scott and Kip’s fucking wedding of the century.

It had all got too real. That wasn’t what they were. They met up a couple times each year, took what they needed from the other, and then left before the afterglow could fade. They did not – could not – have any more than that. And they certainly did not call each other by their forenames. That would imply that they meant more to each other than either had ever expressed, that Rosanov was more than just Rosanov, Shane’s arch rival on ice and absolutely nothing off ice. And that could never happen. - Or, Hayden's reaction to Shane coming back to their hotel room freaking out and in Ilya's clothes in ep 4.

Ilya watches as, with shaking fingers, Shane presses something on his phone and turns it to him.
There is an article open. Ilya sees… a photo of him at Shane’s house in Montreal. A side by side comparison of them, wearing—sharing—the same shirts, and hoodies. Shane’s car driving through the gates at Ilya’s new house.
Shane hiccups, tears streaming down his cheeks.

If the percentage of gay ex-boyfriends Rose has was anything less than 70%, or if her self- esteem had been any lower, she might have been offended or hurt right now. The realization had started slowly. And still, even now, her own experience with Shane and what she knows of him only allows for the picture to change slightly and become one of him actually enjoying sex, but not anything beyond that. He is still socially uncomfortable and hates talking about sex except for that one joke that started out as one of the worst sentences Rose thinks she’s ever uttered out loud. The shy and hesitant version of Shane is still firmly cemented in her mind. Rose is curious, though. She never really stops being curious. It’s why she’s standing here, hidden, not moving a muscle or making a sound as she becomes an accidental voyeur of Shane and Ilya as Shane rides Ilya on the couch.

“You are Scott Hunter’s boy, yes?” Hockey Guy asked, and fuck, he was Russian. Not that Kip had anything against Russians, of course, but the chances were that any given Russian in the NHL was not going to be all that friendly to gay people. The only Russian NHL player Kip was at all familiar with was that Rozanov guy from Boston, and based on the “fighter, womanizer, party boy” stories he’d heard about the guy, he was really hoping that he was not the man standing next to him.
“Yeah. That’s me.” Kip confirmed, standing straighter and flashing a tight smile.
Hockey Guy grinned and offered his hand. “Ilya Rozanov. Nice to meet you.”
God fucking damn it.

“Yeah, what the hell?” Comeau echoes. “Since when do you go around defending Rozanov?”
“I – I’m not,” Hayden says, starting to carefully fold his clothes so he doesn’t have to look anyone in the eye. Maybe Shane is onto something, always folding his things instead of throwing them into his bag. Gives you a moment to concentrate on something manual, to think before having to respond to questions and comments.
“You literally were defending him right now,” J. J. points out.---

A Truth (Finally) Spoken by SuperiorJello
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-15
Shane yells at the team after he's outed via one of Hayden's fanvids. It's actually rather cathartic for him. And for the first time, the team gets to see what Shane is like when he's not keeping himself held under so much pressure, and maybe they see why he gets along with Ilya Rozanov so well. ... When Shane walked into the locker room the day after he was outed, the room was already pretty quiet, but somehow his entrance signalled the team to become even quieter; to freeze in place, perhaps even attempt to hold their breath. The door behind him thumped into the frame as an icy silence crept across the room. He doesn't know what to say, how to start. He and Ilya had made plans, of course. He had statements prepared that they had thrown together last minute based on multiple scenarios, his mom and Ilya’s agent had worked through them with them last night. But now that he was faced with a room full of men he had worked with for years, he knew that he couldn't use them here. They were impersonal, dry things meant for corporate PR and social media posts, not the sort of thing you said to your team face to face, and something about the empty silence stretching ahead told him that this wasn't going to be a Scott Hunter coming out story unless he dragged them there kicking and screaming. The scent of old socks and sweat-soaked pads turned even more sour in his lungs. Shane quickly made eye contact with Hayden, who he had talked with on the phone last night- apologizing for his fanvid being the leak. Shane forgave him, it wasn't his fault. He and Ilya should have been more careful. His friend gave him a nod, and a pained smile. He knew how badly Shane had been spiralling about all of this. Shane looked over at JJ, who he hadn't talked to. He wasn't making eye contact now, either. He sucked in a breath, and spoke. “I know you're all thinking it. And I'm releasing a proper statement on social media… right about now. Yes, I'm gay.” You could've heard a pin drop in that locker room. You could, actually, hear one of the showers dripping, and someone's phone vibrate with an incoming message. And Shane definitely heard Drapeau scoff before crossing his arms and glaring at Shane with a mixture of disgust and disdain. “You people are always being all flashy and rubbing our faces in your depravity, why can't you just shut up and let hockey be hockey, eh?” No one else said anything, though from the ashamed glances to the side from some and conspiratorial looks between some others, Drapeau was not the only one thinking it. Hayden looked ready to step in- if unsure what to say when doing so- but Shane shook his head. He didn't need him to speak for him just yet. Because Shane felt shockingly clear-headed in that moment. He'd been spiralling all night since the news had broken, held together only by first Ilya and then his mom's practicality. Even with that terror settled, he'd been low-key panicking over this reveal for the past decade, constantly worrying about when it would happen and what would do it and how people would react. And now it had. And people weren't reacting well. But that was… that was the worst case scenario. There was nothing bad left to happen. He had already talked to management, already knew he was fine with them (though maybe not good) and was definitely finishing out the season. It was done. All that was left to do was ride this out, and fuck if it wasn't a relief that there was nothing terrible left in the roster of panic in his brain. So Shane was all out of fear, and free to just feel completely, incandescently angry. He barked out a laugh, and it seemed to startle some of his teammates. “I was literally fucking doing that, asshole. I had zero plans to have some big flashy coming out moment like Scott Hunter. I just wanted to live my life and play hockey, and if no one had cared about some background detail in a video about something completely unrelated and had just moved the fuck on then we wouldn't have to be having this conversation at all. But everyone else seems to care that the person I'm in love with has a dick, so this is the conversation we're having. Yes, I'm gay. Yes, I have a boyfriend who loves me, and yes, I love him. No, we're not planning on fucking out on the ice in the middle of a game. So, is that enough for you to chill out and trust that I'm still the same fucking person who won this team the cup back to back?” He scanned over the room, and while a few people did seem to be settling, the majority weren't. And one of those was JJ. That was one regret Shane had in this. JJ was his friend, he should have told him a while ago; especially after Hayden had figured it out and the world didn't end, but Shane had always thought there would be more time. JJ’s eyes held that pain of betrayal when he spoke to Shane. “Your boyfriend is Ilya fucking Rozanov. You don't think that'll cause problems when we play the Centaurs?” But that was a question Shane had an easy answer for. “It never has before,” he replied evenly. Then Comeau jumped in. “How are we supposed to believe that? They won our last game-” “That's because they're a good team,” Hayden interjected, trying to relieve some of the pressure on Shane. It didn't really work, though from the side eye he received, the other players had a pretty good idea where he stood in the overall argument now.
