Shane Hollander knows he’s not a small guy. Years of hockey and workouts have built up his muscles, and lucky genetics from his father’s side places him just shy of six feet. He’s checked hockey players half a foot and several pounds more than him, knocked Scott Hunter into the ice in the one fight he’s ever actually thrown hands in. But as much as Shane loves the game, the fast movements, passes, and team camaraderie, there were times where he could only feel regret at following the path of athletic fame. He puts on the media smile he practices in the mirror as he brushes his hair each day, uses the bright lights of press conferences to erase his view of the audience, and keeps his answers simple and focused on hockey.

The number of people outside the arena still makes him feel crushed in on all sides, small. Eyes trained on his face, cameras flashing, pens and cell phones being passed into his hands. The itch of it all settles under his skin.

@OttawaPoliceDispatch: Police have been dispatched to a house alarm in Galetta, On. Possible break in, destruction of property.

@OttawaOfficialPoliceDepartment: Recent Missing Persons Report filed for Shane William Hollander at 9:25 pm

  2. When kidnappers looking to make millions in ransom money take Shane and Ilya, only Ilya walks away. The year that follows is a hollow existence of grief and mind-numbing devastation.

Then, exactly one year later, Ilya wakes up back in the warehouse on the day of the kidnapping. It’s a surreal, unexplainable second chance. Armed with the knowledge of what will happen, Ilya fights a desperate battle to change the outcome and bring Shane home alive.

  3. Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice. He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone. Impact. The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp. -------------------------------- Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

  4. Shane has a new thing he does in bed now. He says: “Tell me I’m your favorite." "Tell me I suck you better than anyone else." "Tell me I’m the best fuck." Ilya knows he must have wanted to say this before, but thought it was too revealing. He still only says it when he’s pretty lost in what they’re doing. Ilya loves it. Loves anytime Shane is desperate and possessive and needy. It’s one of his favorite ways for Shane to be. He thinks this, and he doesn’t think anything else because he is very stupid, maybe. He says “yes yes yes” and watches Shane light up. Sometimes he says “I don’t know” just to make him blush harder, work harder, cry harder. Get even hungrier underneath him. ... Instead of Ilya pitching an open relationship in TLG, he finds out Shane thinks they already have one. Or: Ilya finally realizes how deeply he fucked Shane up by conditioning him to accept that he would never be enough for Ilya. He tries to address this insecurity in true tuna-melt fashion by showing Shane fuckboy-era sex tapes of himself with other people. Somehow, they still manage to work it out. The first time it comes up they’re still in that happy, sunshine-filled, impossible bubble. Those two weeks at the cottage, the very first time. Shane is hanging over his shoulder, pretending to supervise the way he’s frying bacon, actually just abusing the fact that they can touch as often as they want for the first time in a decade. Ilya cannot even tease him about this because he does the same thing. Finds himself plastered to Shane’s back while he showers, “helping” him take out the trash, generally being a nuisance and high on the fact that the only thing it causes is laughter, teasing. No leaving. No breaking the thing they have between them. No clock counting down minutes until he has to pretend to want to leave. “Sorry Ottawa has, like, no nightlife,” Shane says, like Ilya has any idea what he’s talking about when he’s speaking mostly into the side of his neck. He wiggles his head so he can kiss the side of Shane’s ear, edging Shane further back so he isn’t at risk of getting popped with the grease. “How will I survive the boredom, you think?” Shane laughs and it’s like someone plugged in Ilya’s cord, like he’s switched on, like he’s powered by Shane’s joy and noises and the smile he can feel against his skin. “Wellll, I’m not always here, you know. Almost never during the season. You’ll still have to spend a bunch of time bored here by yourself. Although, it’s not too far a drive to Montreal.” Shane’s smile is fading now, he can feel it where they’re still pressed together. “Is okay. When my boring boyfriend is not here, his boring family says I am welcome anytime.” And Shane is melting, grinning at that, and Ilya decides the bacon is done enough. It’s not like Shane will agree to eat any of it anyway. He doesn’t even know to be scared then. It’s so small. … Three months later Shane has a new thing he does in bed now. He says, “Tell me I’m your favorite, tell me I suck you better than anyone else, tell me I’m the best fuck”. Ilya knows he must have wanted to say this before, but thought it was too revealing. Get even hungrier underneath him. ... Another month passes and it is hard, being Shane’s boyfriend. Much better and much easier but much harder too, than just being Lily. He’s never been owned before like this. Except by the team who holds his contract, or his obligations to his family, his country. This type of owning feels freer. But it also means he has significantly less ways to make himself forget how far away he is from what he wants. How many things could happen that would break this forever. How long it’s going to be before he can see Shane again. It’s easier at home because of his team, or when he plays in Ottawa and Montreal because of Yuna and David, who he really does like to spend time with. It feels greedy almost, like he’s tricking them, when he comes over and gets all that care and attention and he hasn’t even brought Shane. They overlook this loss and act like he’s supposed to be there anyway. When he’s on the road in other cities and won’t see Shane for a while his fantasies get weirder and more embarrassing than they even were before all this, which is saying something. He wants to quit his job. Be Shane’s puck bunny. WAG maybe. Follow him on the road, show up in the WAGS section with some little kid who looks like Shane on his lap. Make him weird macrobiotic food and ask about his day and drop off his dry cleaning. He might actually consider it if it wouldn’t mean never getting Shane on the ice again, which is simply unbearable, even more than being 1000 miles away and not even getting a text back because his boyfriend is busy with some event. Shane never mentions it and he rarely mentions it to Shane except to say 53 days, 14 days, 2 days. He thinks there’s no point in talking about what they can’t change. He thinks they’re in that together. … One of his favorite parts of being a boyfriend, on the very very long list of favorite things that include not having to pretend he doesn’t want to lick Shane’s freckles at literally every opportunity and getting to hear Shane talk about him in the future tense is ditching condoms. He thinks it can’t feel much different for Shane, at least during, but Shane was made in a laboratory specifically to drive him insane with lust and comes faster when they don’t use them, just from knowing they’re that much closer, just from thinking about how Ilya’s going to stay in him afterwards, dripping out slow, leaving him just slightly less empty. He tells him this with his cheeks red and his lips all puffy and his eyes glazed over and his hand rubbing his lower stomach like he can feel where Ilya’s come inside him. This is lucky for Ilya because Ilya absolutely comes way faster than usual. He keeps thinking he’s going to get used to it but so far that is not the case. It’s still so much fucking hotter, wetter, softer he ends up ordering Shane to come before him. Or pulling out and eating Shane as a breather before he keeps on fucking into him, all messy and open and so sensitive he tears up and smacks into Ilya’s back with his heels. What a hardship. So, part of him is kind of relieved when Shane wants to keep using them sometimes. He’s not completely surprised. Shane mostly drops his aversion to all things mess when he pops a boner but it comes back tragically fast in the aftermath when the sheets are wet and tangled up and the pillows aren’t in the right place. He’s completely insane and Ilya loves it, loves him, loves being ordered to grab a towel for gods sake. So whenever Shane kind of awkwardly asks about using condoms again sometimes, he doesn’t mind at all. It just means he can focus on driving Shane out of his mind and crawling inside him and not having to do English language conjugations in his head to keep from going off too fast like he hasn’t had to since he was a teenager, before Shane ruined him, turned him into whatever he was now. If there’s a pattern to when Shane asks, if it lines up

  5. Anya’s barking continues. At this rate, he will need to check on her at the very least to stop the headache that is slowly forming behind his eyes. “Anya! Come on!” Shane calls once more as he sets his phone down on the small table next to his seat, along with his half-finished coffee. Suddenly, before he can register what is happening, Shane feels a strong arm snake around his torso. Rough fibers scratching the exposed skin of his stomach where the hoodie remained unzipped, leaving him exposed. Just as a cry of shock starts to work its way up his throat, a gloved hand reaches around his mouth, smothering anything that would have left his lips. The arm around his middle tightens, and he feels the hard, cold tap of metal against his waist where he assumes his attacker’s hand is. 'A gun'.

    ....

“Grab him. I’ll start the car and we can get out of here.” Joe says over his shoulder as he makes his way to the front door.

  9. It had all got too real. That wasn’t what they were. They met up a couple times each year, took what they needed from the other, and then left before the afterglow could fade. They did not – could not – have any more than that. And they certainly did not call each other by their forenames. That would imply that they meant more to each other than either had ever expressed, that Rosanov was more than just Rosanov, Shane’s arch rival on ice and absolutely nothing off ice. And that could never happen. - Or, Hayden's reaction to Shane coming back to their hotel room freaking out and in Ilya's clothes in ep 4.

I’ll send a nurse to get you when you can see him.” The man went to leave but stopped just outside the door. “Just so you’re not surprised… He’s a little confused, probably from the fever. He’s not making much sense.” “In what way?” David asked. “He keeps talking to someone—a woman who’s not actually there.” “Who?” asked Ilya.

  16. Time was doing that thing again. The medics should be here by now. The rubber band was pulling back, everything in slow motion, everything but Shane and Ilya. Ilya, whose brusque, lofty demeanor could occupy a whole room, who was so still and not lofty now, whose head was bleeding onto Shane's lap. I needed whump & hospitals so I wrote it Shane had seen bodies before. Not like, mid-emergency-situation, but suited up and made up and already in caskets. Just two. Not people he really knew. His grandmother, when he was 8. He'd only met her a couple of times. Her glossy red-oak coffin had been mounted on a wheeled table and someone had lifted him up to look at her. He vaguely remembered the soft, cotton-candy tufts of hair puffed up around her bland face; how pale she was, how old-looking. He hadn't formed a clear enough memory of her alive to know whether or not she looked like herself going into the ground. What he remembered most about that funeral was his mother crying very quietly against his father's shoulder. His mom never cried. In eighth grade, his art teacher, Renee, died suddenly. He was already on his way to giving up on art, as hockey took center-stage in his life, but he hadn't told her yet. She was well-loved. Kind of an odd woman, freer with her feelings and affection than Shane expected people to be, easy to amuse and always light on her feet. He guessed her family was the same way, because her daughters held an open-casket funeral right there in the school auditorium and invited anyone who wanted to come. Shane couldn't imagine inviting a whole school to look at his dead mom. Shane's parents took him. He hadn't known what he would feel; of course he was sad that she was gone--they'd had a rapport, and she really liked Shane, even though he wasn't all that good at art. But he didn't know her. His father stayed in line with him for the viewing while his mother made the rounds, socializing and offering condolences and sharing memories. It had seemed strange to get in line for something like this. To say goodbye. But that was what people were doing, and Shane Hollander went with the flow. He remembered this funeral because he hated it. Everything leading up to the viewing was fine. A little sad. Nothing unexpected. Students hung their art on a corkboard and a few people spoke. Her daughters spoke. Shane thought about how it would feel if it was his mom. That made him sad. But the viewing wasn't exactly sad. He didn't know what the word for it was. It was...uncanny, maybe. He hated it. Renee still had her long, light hair, blonde struck through with coarse silver. She was dressed in an outfit that she would have worn to school. Patterned dress, layers, heeled boots with laces, a yellow scarf around her neck. Her nails were painted a glossy red. They shone where her hands were crossed over her stomach. Shane heard someone behind him say, they did a wonderful job. She could just be sleeping. But Shane didn't agree. Renee was not sleeping. Renee was not even Renee. She looked like a puppet of herself. The light was gone out of her. The color of her skin was wrong in a way Shane couldn't quite identify. Her hands were stiff, forced together, and he couldn't believe they were the same hands that he'd seen at the pottery wheel in class, shaping soggy lumps of clay into trinket trays. It was the first time in his life that Shane had gotten a glimpse of what death actually meant. That a person could truly stop existing. His teacher had been there one day, a whirl of life and energy and laughter, and now her body was still here, but she was gone from it. It had made him feel sick. The only saving grace was that her eyes were closed. He didn't think he could stand to see her eyes. He dreamed of her dead eyes opening for a week afterward, of a glazed stare with nothing behind it. The dreams weren't about Renee, exactly, but more about death in general; the absence of life; the fragility of physicality. It wasn't a dramatically life-altering experience. There was no epiphany, no sudden surge of energy that propelled Shane into pouring all his energy into hockey, into living, into embodying his physical form for as short a time as he might have it. It was just a moment in time. A subtle shift in worldview. One of the many maturities a person accumulates as they grow up. Everyone confronts death for the first time some time. The only thing was, Shane didn't expect to be doing it again so soon. He was twenty-four. He hadn't thought of his grandmother or Renee in years. Had no reason to. But he was thinking of them now, while he stared at Ilya lying prone on the ice. Hockey wasn't the most dangerous team sport--that honor probably went to football, or maybe rugby, Shane honestly didn't know--but it wasn't easy on a person, either. Everyone knew someone who knew someone who had at least been disabled by an on-ice accident. And there were the horror stories, the rare deaths, the skate-slashing and head-banging and high-speed collisions. Two bodies slamming into each other at 25 MPH was not a pretty sight. Ilya's body. It occurred to Shane that he hadn't moved in some time. It couldn't have been very long-- there hadn't been a surge of movement from the crowd yet, no follow-up to the hushed gasp that Ilya's collapse had warranted. But it felt, suddenly, like time had caramelized, and Shane was stuck in it. He was looking at Ilya, whose eyes were closed, and around whom Harris was flitting frantically, and around whose head a dark puddle had begun to form, oozing out from the place Ilya's helmet had been knocked off, and he was telling himself to move, to go across the rink and check on him, but time would not let him. Until it did. The universe snapped back like a rubber band. It had slowed only long enough for Shane to set his sights on his target, the way the world slowed when he was about to take a shot, and as soon as it let him go, he was catapulting across the ice, probably dangerously fast, but he didn't care. He was in the zone. Stray players who had only just begun to realize what happened, who were slowly turning around to look at Ilya and then at Shane, were obstacles he easily avoided. The path lit up before him like magic. It had always been this way with hockey, with skating, and now it was this way with Ilya, too. He made it before anyone else did. Except Harris, of course, who had hit Ilya, accidentally. Harris was bent at the waist, hands on his knees, wheezing from the impact and trying to say Rozanov. "Get out of the way," Shane snapped, and didn't look around to see Harris comply. He knelt beside Ilya. His eyes went first to his hands. It wasn't a choice. He wanted to look at Ilya's face, to see if his eyes were open. But he couldn't do it yet. It was too scary. Hands first. Rozanov's hands were crossed over his stomach, and an image of Renee's superimposed itself over them, glossy red fingernails, plastic-y dead skin. Shane's breath left him. But Ilya's hands were clenched and twitching. Holding himself. Not dead. Not still. Not yet. That made it safe enough to look higher. His eyes were closed, his helmet half-off. He'd been taking it off when Harris slammed into him.

  19. “Because I can’t fucking do this, Ilya. I’m going to my parents’, I- I need a break, alright? Shit.” Shane’s gaze locked onto his keys and he picked them up, stalking towards the door. He needed a break from the arguing and he needed to go somewhere he could breathe and collect his thoughts, so he could process this correctly and talk about it with Ilya civilly. Everything was still suffocating and overwhelming and Shane needed out, needed to go sit in his car and drive in silence to his parents’ place. - Ilya had seen enough breakups to know what one looked like. Shane ignored him, and looked irritated, and said he couldn’t do this (this, like everything between them could be reduced to a single word other than love), and said he needed a break (his confidence in Ilya’s English was comforting up until Ilya realised it meant Shane didn’t feel the need to say the dramatic I’m breaking up with you that characterised the ends of relationships). or, hollanov fight and misunderstandings resulting in an injury ensue
