Shane collapses into Ilya’s arms after a game! Ilya, who can only watch as his boyfriend slowly dies in the hospital, is beyond devastated and desperate for a miracle. Fortunately, a surprise ally comes to help both boys! —————— “Shane is strong,” Ilya declared, snarling at the doctor like he was an opponent in a hockey game. “He will not die.” The doctor offered a kind, indulgent smile. “He’s almost settled in a room. I’ll send a nurse to get you when you can see him.” The man went to leave but stopped just outside the door. “Just so you’re not surprised… He’s a little confused, probably from the fever. He’s not making much sense.” “In what way?” David asked. “He keeps talking to someone—a woman who’s not actually there.” “Who?” asked Ilya.

After the longest season of his career, Ilya retreats to the cottage with Shane, expecting rest, recovery, and a month of stolen peace. Instead, exhaustion lingers. Small things feel wrong. And the body that has always carried him through pain begins to falter in ways he can’t explain. As concern grows and outside eyes begin to notice, the life Ilya and Shane have carefully built—careers, borders, futures—starts to feel fragile. When a medical crisis shatters their summer before answers arrive, love is no longer something they protect quietly. It becomes something they fight with. A story about what happens when the body speaks before you’re ready to listen, and the people who refuse to let you face it alone.

Hayden coughs up the first petals the night Shane's trade to Ottawa is announced.

Hayden doesn't have hanahaki and if he does, it's purely platonic and if it's not, nobody ever has to know. Especially not Shane.
