  2. It's 2023. Ottawa has a real chance at the cup again this year. First win could've been luck but a second one in a row would cement their reputation. And if these few remaining games go right, they will be looking at back-to-back wins. Shane might be the first player in MHL history who has consecutive wins in two different teams. He will never do anything to jeopardize that opportunity. But his body. Something's happening... Not to mention his temper. It can probably wait until after they get the cup though. Probably. Or, it’s Shane’s second season with the Centaurs and he’s getting that cup, no matter what his body’s screaming at him. Ilya’s more stressed about it than he is. They get the cup and a pretty amazing souvenir out of it by the end of the season though. Set in a universe where everyone can get pregnant. Men just have a harder time being carriers. It usually takes a while for them and is normally done on purpose. Hollanov is really just that “casually beats the odds” couple.

“Luch-Shane,” Ilya says, catching himself only at the last moment before he breaks their no pet names in the workplace rule. “Why don’t you get some air, yes? We can-”

Shane’s anxiety takes a quick backseat to annoyance once more, at being handled like a child instead of a grown man, like he hasn’t been doing this just as long as Ilya, like he needs someone to tell him when to take a break.

Like he deserved to have everything taken away from him because he couldn’t handle it to start with.

“I’m fine,” he says, voice icy.

The step he takes away is too big, farther than he meant to get from Ilya’s side, and the air between them feels both charged and icy.

He isn’t quite bold enough to try and fix it.

(shane is married and on the same team as his husband) (and all it cost him was his whole career and the life he spent years building beforehand) (but it's fine, really) (it's all so very, very fucking fine)

Oh, he’s not gonna like this, but he knows how to let Shane know that Hayden will be welcoming to Lily. He grabs his laptop off the coffee table and looks up transgender athletes. If he can subtly drop some facts here and there, stuff that’ll stick in Hollzy’s insane memory for anything sports-related, Shane will start opening up about Lily before he even realizes he’s doing it. Hayden will—what’s it called?—classically condition him. Fucking take that, Pavlov.

Hayden sees a picture he shouldn’t have seen, comes to some interesting but well-meaning conclusions, and maybe learns some stuff about himself along the way.

Or, according to Mx_Cryptid on Ch. 4, "Hayden allied too close to the sun and cracked [his] own egg. Poor baby."

  5. J.J. reminded himself every morning to be thankful. To be thankful for life, to be thankful for being a successful defensive man on a successful hockey team, to be thankful for his family and most importantly - to be thankful for the brothers he accumulated by playing the sport that he loves. However, in this continuous basking of thankfulness and gratitude, J.J. has sometimes found himself feeling empty. He was told many times that he was a complex puzzle, full of excitement and whimsy but very hard to put together. On many days, he felt completed; all the pieces matching together - creating a picture of beauty, wonder, and sometimes grace. But there were plenty days where he felt the piece or pieces were missing. He sought day in and day out to figure that out.

or the J.J. looks for the missing piece and finds it in Carter Vaughn.

  6. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper called it an international emergency in his address to the Canadian public. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin claimed Russia was devoting every resource to it. The endless loops of crawling chyrons titled it Hockey Held Hostage. Eventually, Wikipedia settled on ‘The Sochi Affair’:

The Sochi Affair (Russian: Сочинское дело; French: affaire Sotchi) was a multinational hostage and extortion crisis that began on Thursday, February 20, 2014, when Olympic ice hockey players, Shane Hollander of Canada and Ilya Rozanov of Russia, were abducted from the Iceberg Skating Palace during the Sochi Winter Olympics and held hostage in southwestern Kazakhstan for 3 months, 19 days.

The world was captivated when Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander went missing, but no one will ever know what they found in the face of survival.

  10. Then Scott Hunter looked at him, really looked at him with no panic or consternation or grief, just something heavy and piercing that made Ilya feel like his heart was on the outside of his ribcage. “Be safe out there, okay?”

“Okay,” Ilya said, softer than intended.

In real life, they both turned around and walked away into the night. But in Ilya’s memory, that never happens. They just stand there, eye-to-eye, until the sun comes up and it’s too bright to see anything else.

  12. Shane Hollander is benched following the fanmail video that outed his relationship with his rival Ilya Rozanov. While walking alone in Montreal he passes by a sports bar showing the Metros losing without him and he meets two unlikely companions.

“Didn’t mean to interrupt,” says Shane in soft English, looking at the bartender only, “Uh, just saw the game was on when I walked by, wanted to know the score.” He swallows thickly, “Guess we’re losing?”

The man who’d called him a homo ducks and with considerable effort, puts the table back where it had been before. He mutters something that Shane thinks is an apology to the bartender. The other man shakes his hand and reaches for a nearby chair.

In English, the man who’d called him the pride of Montréal says loudly, “A ginger ale for Monsieur Hollander, yes?”

Shane hesitates, then nods at the bartender, who wordlessly starts to pour. The two men finish righting the place and gesture for Shane to sit with them. Shane shouldn’t. But he does as the bartender comes over and sets a glass of ginger ale in front of him.

“So,” says Shane as casually as he can, “Uh, I guess you’re both Metros fans?”

Weakly, he protests, “Hey, I wasn't going t–”

“I'm letting you off easy,” Evan says, pulling his hand back. He folds his arms over his barrel chest and glowers down at the man. “I get paid handsomely to protect that man. 16. Shane Hollander’s life revolves around hockey to an almost concerning degree. The assumption by pretty much everyone who knows him is that Shane therefore has no time for love. Then they meet Liliya Rozanova, Russia’s darling figure skater and Hollander’s apparently long-time girlfriend. There’s something about this situation that isn’t quite right.

  17. It starts as an accident.

Shane’s focused, eyes locked on the ice. He isn’t thinking about anything else, let alone his response when an inevitable chirp comes. He doesn’t understand he's done anything different until later in the locker room. Ilya can’t stop talking about some chirp and Shane is only half listening until he hears his name.

“What?” He looks up with a frown. “I didn’t chirp anyone.”

“Shane, lyubimii, love of my life.” Ilya steps forward to press a smacking kiss to Shane’s forehead. “You error-screened Benoit!”

So it starts by accident, but it doesn’t take Shane very long to lean into it. He loves Ilya. The entire League knows they’re married, and it isn’t that hard to believe that a married couple would be having sex.

  20. It wasn’t his first hockey fight, not by far. After decades of playing, it was impossible to avoid the occasional scrum. It just wasn’t something that Shane purposefully tried to get involved in. He wasn’t like Ilya, he didn’t find joy in pushing and prodding at the other team until one of them snapped and threw a punch. When a scrum did break out, he hardly ever joined the fray, preferring instead to focus on managing the refs and trying to get his team out of the fight with as few penalties as possible. When Shane’s fist connected with Comeau’s cheekbone, Shane grinned. -- Or, the moment Shane realized he played his last game as a Montreal Metro and has to come to terms with everything that means after. Featuring Shane realizing he's not as okay as he seems, and Ilya trying to figure out how he can help.
