Everything was still suffocating and overwhelming and Shane needed out, needed to go sit in his car and drive in silence to his parents’ place. - Ilya had seen enough breakups to know what one looked like. Shane ignored him, and looked irritated, and said he couldn’t do this (this, like everything between them could be reduced to a single word other than love), and said he needed a break (his confidence in Ilya’s English was comforting up until Ilya realised it meant Shane didn’t feel the need to say the dramatic I’m breaking up with you that characterised the ends of relationships). or, hollanov fight and misunderstandings resulting in an injury ensue

His brain feels fuzzy and his eyes blur and whether it’s from unshed tears he hasn’t noticed yet or for another reason completely, he isn’t sure. He isn’t sure how he got from point A to point B, but all he knows is suddenly he can’t breathe. Suddenly, he’s six feet under, water encasing his lungs as they shrivel and expand into nothing. Well she wasn’t sure if he was actually cheating yet. It took her everything to wait until morning. But when Shane finally awoke she asked that damn question. "Who is Lily?" (OR: Rose finds an asleep Shane looking at a text thread with Lily. Only she'd never heard of a Lily before and feared the worst. Luckily for her, Shane explained everything. Or well, almost everything.)

You think I invited you here just so you could spend Christmas alone?” Looking away, Ilya shrugs. “I am intruder here, Hollander. You have family. I do not. Makes situation… difficult, maybe. You forget the world thinks we are rivals.” “Not difficult,” Shane says immediately. “You want to come, you’re coming.” Or: Ilya's in Montreal alone during the week leading up to the Winter Classic. Shane doesn't let him spend Christmas alone.

Textbook fucking definition. Maybe it's what he needs to give up on this. He just needs to hear Shane say it, that's all. —— Shane freaks out.
