  1. They’ve been struggling a lot with time zones recently.

They’ve always texted each other no matter where either of them are, or what time it is. It used to just be sexts and hotel room numbers and deleted messages. Now, it’s also funny videos and articles about hockey and long, rambling threads, only messages with their names deleted. They video call nearly every night. Nothing is really specific to the time.

    Except.

“Good morning,” “goodnight,” sappy and saccharine, sent as soon as they wake up and right before they go to bed. That’s been a thing since the cottage, especially on nights they can’t call. Good morning, goodnight, easy when they’re both on the same continent, easy when there’s no time difference versus a 7 hour one, but Shane keeps sending the wrong one by accident lately, and Ilya teases him because -

    “Shane?”

    “He’s in Russia,” Shane rasps.

  2. "Ah, you are going to prison," Ilya says as the door swings open. "I always knew they would get you. It's probably the time you tried to scam our neighbours with very overpriced lemonade and brownies."

Katya rolls her eyes at him as she pushes inside.

"Not everyone can get a million dollar hockey contract at 18."

"We should have bought her an apartment," Ilya says, turning to Shane.

"The website said they encourage people to live on campus for at least their first year. It's easier to make friends!"

Or, Katya Hollander-Rozanov is moving into her dorm at McGill. No one is handling it particularly well, but they're trying.

He’s smiling behind his hand, though. The relief in his body is still a palpable thing.

  6. There, in an overhung area that had been initially blocked from view, was what could only be described as a Greek god in Adidas track pants and La Sportiva Solutions. The god was hanging off a purple sloper with his left arm, shaking out and chalking up casually with his right. Shane barely noticed himself taking a few steps forward as he squinted at the grade. V9. Shane watched as the climber matched his hands and then carefully rotated on his toe to dip his left hand back into the chalk bag swinging at his hips. A little puff of chalk exploded out onto the man’s bare lower back, an area Shane had been trying to ignore, as he always tried to ignore the muscled backs of the bros who tore off their shirt as soon as they got in the gym. His eyes drifted upward, taking in the impressive lats, flexing and glistening with a sheen of sweat, and all the way up to the tousled blonde hair...

What the fuck. Was that…? Shane blanched as he realized that he recognized the climber. He wasn’t a Greek god at all. He was Russian. And not a god either, but that was besides the point. It was Ilya Rozanov, the top male youth boulderer in Russia, winner of last year’s IFSC Youth World Championship, where Shane had gotten 4th place.

When the NHL hosts a charity gala during the 2016 All Stars weekend, both Shane and Ilya are put on auction as donors bid on a chance to go on a date with them in support of a good cause.

Too bad they bet on each other.

  8. After two decades together and a lifetime built around hockey, Shane has exactly one goal for their first vacation after retirement: Executing the perfect road trip.

He’s planned every hotel, every restaurant, every scenic stop, and enough contingency plans to survive a natural disaster.

Ilya’s contribution consists of one backpack, a passport, and an unwavering commitment to ignoring at least half Shane’s itenerary.

As they make their way from New Orleans to Portland, the best memories are the ones Shane never planned for.

  9. All told he got into a couple scraps a year, but nothing to write home about – he didn’t instigate, he didn’t go too far. He kept his head level and focused on what it needed to be focused on: winning the game. Sure, one time he almost punched Scott Hunter’s lights out after a game, but whatever – he was emotionally compromised then, sue him. Mostly everyone assumed that was a weird blip and let it go, and he and Scott maintained enough professional friendliness at league events that everyone figured it wasn’t personal, which it wasn’t.

All of that to say that the more and more the media went on about Hockey’s Golden Boy, the more people forgot that Shane was, at the end of the day, just like any other professional hockey player. He knew how to throw a fucking punch. He just chose not to, most times, for strategic reasons.

It became apparent that people had forgotten this very key fact almost immediately after he joined the Centaurs.

  10. It occurs to Shane, distantly, that he’ll have to wear the defaced jersey and his sweaty uniform pants if he wants to leave the locker room. He really, really wants to leave the locker room.

His feet won’t move, though, like the bottom half of his body is suddenly made of lead, while the rest of him twists uncontrollably in the wind. His head feels like it’s floating off into outer space.

    Traitor.

Things get worse for Shane after he and Ilya get outed to the world. Ilya and the Centaurs help soften the blow.

A string of messages from Ilya and a phone call from his mother confirm the worst: something has happened, and he doesn't know what.

Shane freezes so completely that even his breathing falters. Every instinct buried deep inside his prey-animal heart surges awake at once, and his pulse begins hammering against his ribs hard enough that he swears the entire tunnel must be shaking with it. The sound comes again, slow and deliberate, accompanied by the faint whisper of feet dragging across loose soil. Through the opening beside him, a shadow briefly glides across, blocking the sunlight, before disappearing again.

Silence settles over Shane as he stays still, frozen. It lasts one heartbeat and then two, before a quiet hiss curls through the air behind him, familiar enough to make every hair on the back of his neck stand upright.

"Well, hello, зайчик," the man's voice says, an amused warmth in his voice that leaves Shane flustered. A low chuckle follows before he continues, "What a pretty little tail you have there."

  16. Shane has his cornerstones of control: Ilya, food, and hockey.

He can keep them all discrete and harmonious - a well-oiled machine.

Hockey belongs on the ice. Shane and Ilya belong at the cottage. Hayden belongs at a distance where Shane doesn't have to explain himself.

Except Hayden really should know about Ilya, shouldn't he? And surely telling him can't blow Shane's life up too much. Ilya doesn't think so, but Ilya routinely asserts that his skates are "too American and trying to humble him", so maybe Ilya's opinions aren't always to be entirely trusted.

OR: Hayden Pike loves Shane a lot. Enough to tolerate the Russian shitbag that is Ilya Rozanov? Well...

  17. ‘What is the song about, uncle George?’

Shane listens, transfixed, as Rozanov on the other side of the speaker explains to the yawning twins that the song he was singing was his mother’s favourite. He deflects when they ask what the song is about and if they can learn it. There is something in the way he says it that tugs at Shane’s heart.

‘I can maybe teach you something else, da? Is like a poem, something I learned when I was small like you?’ he offers another suggestion and the girls sound delighted. Shane doesn’t have the heart to complain that they should be sleeping, not learning poems and that it’s long past midnight already.

Something cold settles low in Shane's stomach at her hesitation. His mom almost never hesitates, always confident and firm in what she is doing. Whatever she's about to say, it's probably no small thing.

"There's something I need to tell you," she says quietly. "Something we need to tell you."

"Mom?" Shane asks, confused. Shane stares at his mother, waiting for the rest of the explanation, but nothing comes. Mom keeps both hands on the steering wheel, her eyes fixed firmly on the road ahead. "What do you mean?" he asks quietly.

    "David isn't your biological father."

  19. A detailed look at Shane and Ilya's perspectives of seeing each other for the first time, as well as Ilya's perspective of their first interaction in the classroom. Spoilers: they're utterly enamoured by one another but are too afraid to admit it. This is a one-shot based on my original it's always been you. I highly recommend reading it first (at least up until the second chapter) to understand the context of this work.

A blur explodes from the undergrowth.

Shane barely has time to register movement before something slams into him hard, the impact driving all the air from his lungs. The world flips sideways, the ground rushing up to meet him, and he grunts when he lands, pain erupting from his shoulder. Dirt and debris fly, getting into his eyes, and Shane hisses at the pain, shaking his head violently.

Something massive lands on top of him. Shane's first thought is 'Holy shit, it's a bear.' The bear that killed the moose has followed him, has decided Shane is its next victim, and he opens his burning eyes to blurrily look at the animal on top of him.

    It's not a bear.
