Things like this didn't happen to other people; Shane knew that. He’d been alive long enough to experience the confused glances and exasperated scoffs that always accompanied his discomfort with things other people didn't even notice. He would not fuck this up – not because he couldn't handle the way the sheets touched his skin. The burning of his skin spread to his eyes as his vision blurred. He squeezed his eyes shut and scrubbed his hands over his face. He would not cry. The tears fell hot and silent. They pooled at the curve of his jaw and around his chin, puddles of shame and self-contempt. Fucking breathe, he told himself, as he turned the faucet of the shower as far as it could go. He stood watching the water pool around his feet and slip down the drain until he heard Ilya stir. At first, he wasn't sure if he had really heard his name. “Shane?… Shane?” He wanted to yell back, assure Ilya everything was fine, but when he opened his mouth, only a squeak escaped. “Moya lyubov?” He cleared his throat and tried again: “In here.”

Cliff watches him squeeze the phone between his cheek and shoulder, lifting the jersey over his head as he continues to talk, a bit distracted now by the multitasking.
“And was good practice, you know, for when I am your husband."
Immediately, the locker room goes dead silent. And so does Rozanov, in fact.
In which Ilya accidentally calls himself Shane's future husband in the middle of the Bears locker room. Worse still, they're not even dating yet.

Shane Hollander ✅ @shanehollanderofficial
I’ve seen many publications over the years speculating on my own, and my husband’s, hockey stats and accolades in relation to our romantic relationship and when the public assumes it started. We don’t owe this to anyone. But we’ve also been playing professional hockey for seventeen years and we’ve both run out of ahem, cares to give.
On the right is a photograph from the behind the scenes of our joint CCM advertisement in July of 2010. This photo predates the hundreds of combined accomplishments listed on the left.
Oh, and it was also taken about six hours before our first kiss.
-----
or; a year from retirement and out of fucks to give, shane reveals their timeline to twitter in response to the latest speculatory article on their relationship. hollanovs across the world rejoice, centaurs celebrate their beloved dads, and former teammates share the not-so-subtle clues they missed the first time.

Then the question came.
“And your dad is what, boring? Is that where you get your boring from?”
It was just Ilya teasing him. But Shane had froze. It’s not that he could say it outright. Oh, Ilya funny that you might mention that! Actually, what I got from my dad was the ability to teleport. Haha, how funny is that?

Shane has the ability to teleport. But how and when exactly do you tell your fuckbuddy/boyfriend of eight years that little fact?

Shane gestured helplessly at the empty space Wyatt had just vacated. “Rozanov. What are you doing? This is for charity.” Sliding a heavy, matte-black credit card across the counter, Ilya didn’t even blink. “I know,” he murmured, his blue eyes dropping directly to Shane’s mouth. “I’m being generous.” When Shane Hollander is drafted into working the hospital’s Valentine’s Day kissing booth, he expects awkward kisses and a miserable afternoon. What he doesn’t expect is Ilya Rozanov buying every single ticket.

When Ilya's phone is hacked and all of his private texts are leaked, Shane Hollander is grateful for insisting that he and Ilya delete their texts each day.
What he did not expect, though, was to find out that Ilya and Cliff Marlow were having sex throughout Ilya's time in Boston... and maybe still are.

Shane’s face lit up with recognition at the song. “Oh, wait, I like this one!”
Ilya watched in amused confusion as Shane stood suddenly and followed a bunch of Metros onto the dance floor. The remaining Metros hooted and hollered after him.
Hayden grinned at the sight. “Right on the dot, three drink Shane.”
Ilya looked at Hayden with an inquisitive look. “Three drink Shane?”
Hayden nodded sagely. “We’ve only seen it twice. Because he hardly ever drinks and rarely more than one drink. But three drink Shane likes to dance.”- Language:

Shane was in the last weeks of his pregnancy. He only wanted to spend a couple of days in the cottage alone with Ilya, just the two of them before the baby arrived. Everything would be alright. Nothing could go wrong, could it? They had been so naive. Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong, putting them through one of the scariest situations of their lives.

Ilya has heard people say that suicide is a selfish act. He's heard people say it about his mother, and it used to make him furious. He’d punched Alexei for it, once, broken his nose when he said, why are you still moping over that selfish bitch, she left us without a thought, even though he knew it was his brother’s grief speaking and not his heart.
That word, selfish, made him so furious, maybe, because some small part of him believed it. Some part of himself, a part of him that he was too ashamed of to acknowledge, let alone to name, believed that his mother should have been braver. Should have been stronger. Should have fought harder to stay with him, to keep taking care of him. Would have, if she’d loved Ilya as much as she claimed to.
He knows now, now that he has Shane, that it isn’t true. He knows it is possible to love someone entirely, completely, with the purest and truest love, and for life to still be unbearable.

“Shane has boyfriend?"
“Mom thinks so. He’s dodging my texts, but it definitely seems like he’s seeing someone.”
Ilya's whispered "No" was drowned out by a loud snort from another teammate, who said something like, "Good for lil' bro."
Ilya shouldn’t feel like dying. Should have expected this to happen at some point. Deserved it, even. He had been ghosting Shane for months, after all.
In which Ilya knows he's not good enough to be with his best friend's little brother. He spirals over Shane possibly dating someone else nonetheless.
Alternatively, Ilya will always be the one Shane will still run to.
