  1. “Ilya, baby,” he started, instinctively, in English. “Slow down a little, I-” “Что?” he murmured, blinking at him, confused now. “Почему…?” Or: Ilya is the one taking a hit on the ice. He’s brought to the hospital, concussed. When he wakes, he can only speak Russian… and Shane has been studying.

  2. The hockey world is shocked when #1 draft pick Ilya Rozanov backs out of the NHL last second and opts to play for the KHL in his home country. Nobody knows why, and he leaves North America without comment. So Shane does what any kid with a crush did in 2010. He emails him. Or; the Hollanov epistolary email fic

  3. Without a word, Ilya snaps his fingers and when Shane looks up he is holding Bood's phone in his hand. For a fleeting moment, Shane considers throwing the phone the full length of the bus just to get it away from his husband.

He watches the way Ilya's eyes drag across the screen, reading whatever is in front of him. Ilya's jaw muscle twitches, his eyes narrow, and his nostrils flare. His whole face shifts from the beautiful man that he loves into some chiseled marble statue depicting the depth of man's rage.

  4. In Vegas, after they’d said everything right up to the edge of I love you, Shane and Ilya came up with a plan. It was long term, with many, many steps. There might be a spreadsheet somewhere that Shane won’t admit to.

But it’s a plan, nonetheless. Over the summer of 2014, they tweak it and add things important to the both of them. There are even many, extensive, contingency plans.

  5. Finally, Shane lifts his eyes from the computer screen. He removes his glasses, a move that Ilya silently mourns, and sets them aside. Shane's eyes are duller than usual, and the tiniest bit bloodshot. His cheeks are flush in a way that is not fun and sexy but reads more fever and germs.

    He looks so tired.

“You, and do not take this the wrong way, look like shit.”

    “Fuck off, Rozanov!”

What they don’t expect is how difficult — and how hopeful — it will be to finally build a life together.

As the Centaurs rebuild, Shane and Ilya navigate new teammates, new expectations, and the unfamiliar challenge of letting their relationship exist outside of stolen moments and long-distance phone calls.

Because it turns out, being on a losing hockey team might be the easy part.

He sounded distracted. “Okay…” Shane didn’t buy it. Why does Ilya take longer than usual in the bathroom post-sex? Why is he just staring at the wall after he's changed the sheets? Ilya Rozanov does not make it two weeks on Zoloft before the worst side effect hits hard and fast.

    or,

“Barrett, I fucked up,” he says.

    “Roz?” Barrett sounds dazed.

“I fucked up,” he repeats, and he realizes how drunk he sounds. He’s in so much trouble he almost hangs up.

“Roz, what's going on,” Barrett says.

Bozhe, he’s going to have to say the words.

Now with part two, featuring buckwheat pancakes, psychiatry for millionaires, important conversations, and Troy and Ilya’s worst “your mom” joke.

  12. “If it ever gets bad,” he’d said quietly, eyes serious in a way that made Ilya’s chest ache, “you call me. Or you call my parents. You don’t get to drown by yourself anymore. They love you. I love you and that’s not conditional.” Ilya had brushed it off at first. He always did. “I am not drowning.” Shane had just tilted his head. “Promise me anyway.” And because it was Shane, because the word promise meant something sacred to him, Ilya had nodded. “I promise.” (ie. ilya gets sent a photo of irina while shane is in montreal and does the right thing and reaches out for help)

  15. In a timeline where Scott never worked up the nerve to kiss Kip, Ilya and Shane still make their relationship official but he never decides to play for Ottawa. Instead, they stick to a long-distance relationship which leads to Hayden hiding in a bathroom while his best friend crawls into bed with the most abhorrent man in the entire league.
    ---
“He did not hit you on purpose,” Shane defended. “And you attacked him after he helped you up, remember? If the medic didn’t bench you, starting a fight would have. You probably got the better end of the deal.”

Good, Hayden thought to himself. At least he wasn’t going to throw JJ under the bus for what was clearly an accident.

Ilya tsk’d in annoyance. “Don’t act like he didn’t take the opportunity to throw a punch,” he replied. “I saw you go after Marleau, too.”

“Well, I had to go after someone. I couldn’t just stand there why everyone was fighting and look like an idiot,” Shane responded with a shrug. “Besides, it was mild payback for him sending me to the hospital.”

“He said you fight like Pomeranian,” Ilya retorted with a straight face. “Puppy mitts that barely hurt.”

“Freckles?” He askes and points to the dots on his cheekbones. Ilya nods in agreement and commits the word freckles to memory. “You like my freckles.” The blush is back when Shane realizes what he said.
Ilya has the sudden thought that this moment is important, a voice in his head that might sound like his mother, or might be his own that says, don’t fuck this up, not this one. Ilya decides very suddenly that he is going to listen, and against every instinct ingrained in him, decides to be honest.

  19. Leaning over Shane was a man. He had dark hair and was annoyingly handsome, the sort who looked like he’d never struggled with a grammatical case in his life.

Shane laughed. Ilya turned his head.

That was his husband. His Shane. His beautifully focused Shane, with the scattered freckles and the adorable way he leaned into a problem. And he was gifting that hard-won laugh to a stranger.

Ilya is happy Shane is learning Russian. He just wasn’t prepared for how it would feel to watch someone else teach him, correct him, and make him laugh.

Ilya reacts normally. Which is to say: not at all.

Every Thursday. Like I have for the entire time we've been together." "You know what you're doing." Shane's lips twitched. Just barely. But Ilya saw it. "I'm folding a hoodie."
