  1. Before Felix could remove his headphones, he heard it. Heavy, borderline panicked breaths. Felix realized that it must be Hollander. His mic was not turned off when he left the interview. Footsteps. And then a door opening and closing. They had filmed the interview that morning at the offices of the Irina Foundation. It sounded like maybe he had gone into his office.

“Hey, what is it? What is wrong?” Another voice. Unmistakable anywhere. Even if Felix hadn’t spent weeks now listening to it, he would still have recognized Ilya Rozanov’s voice.

    –

So he approaches Shane and Ilya about filming them over the course of the 2020/2021 season to create an honest documentary that tells the true story of their lives. 6. And now, as Shane flew down the ice, carrying the puck back and forth with his stick, he found himself enjoying his own breathlessness. He felt his stomach jolt and his hands grow clammy with the excitement of the breakaway. The rink seemed to fade away as he got closer and closer to Toronto’s goalie. He did not see the crowd start to stand, sensing the impending goal. He did not see Montreal’s bench lean further over the boards, praying for the win that would clinch their spot in the cup finals and already imagining the glory of securing another title.

He did not see Todd Masterson.

  9. "Rozanov?" he says, almost without meaning to. Surely he's mistaken and is about to be told to fuck off. Or, even more alarmingly, he is correct, and then he is certain to be told to fuck off, and possibly punched in the face. The man shifts, eyes drifting from his drink up to Scott and— well, there's no denying it. The captain of the Boston Raiders is drunk in Scott's neighborhood dive bar.

"Fuck," the response is slow, the delayed reaction of molasses spilling out of a jar carelessly knocked over on the kitchen counter. "I must have overdone it. I have summoned the Ghost of Hockey Past."

Scott could just leave. He could turn on a heel, and leave this drunk asshole to discover on his own what consequences are.

Because he's stupid, though, because he's nothing if not a responsible captain even when the drunken idiot in question isn't even one of his own teammates, and yes, because a small part of him can't help but love a good train wreck when he sees one, he sits down instead.

  12. The best players, Stefan's mentor had told him, are like racehorses: highly strung, and easily spooked. Hollander was the best of the best. And his career - the challenge of working with him and his particular routines - had elevated Stefan's standing in the Honorable Siblinghood, so it was as much professional debt as favouritism that had Stefan taking a particular interest in Hollander, by the time he came out to the locker room. Stefan expected to be working with him until one or other of them retired. [...]
If, after that, Hollander's skate laces were replaced before they started to wear thin, and if the new laces passed through the hands of at least two fully-sworn Senior or Very Senior Equipment Managers before they met his skates, that was within Stefan's discretion. He never even spoke of it, directly, to his team.

  17. He answered the phone, pressing it tight against his ear even as he maneuvered his way through the locker room and toward the hallway. “Hey. Is everything all right?”

There was a moment of silence, shaky and stiff that worried Scott more than the five separate calls did. Scott’s frown deepened, pulse beginning to hammer beneath his skin. He threw caution to the wind, unable to think clearly over the nausea beginning to roil in his gut. “Kip? What’s wrong?”

“Is this Scott?” An unfamiliar voice filtered through the speaker and into Scott’s ear, doing nothing to calm the anxiety slowly ratcheting up higher and higher within him.

Scott paused for a moment in the doorway, not caring if his teammates noticed him. “Who is this? What’s going on?”

“This is Kip’s dad.” Scott braced himself against the doorframe, stomach clawing its way up his throat.

    “I said Benny what?”

“If you had to choose, you said Benny.”

“Oh God,” Scott sighs. He carefully keeps his eyes closed. This is what Carter has been mulling over for months now? “It wasn’t that deep, I just said whatever. I don’t see you guys that way.”

“Yeah, yeah, I get that,” Carter says. “But…hypothetically.”

  20. Ilya has heard people say that suicide is a selfish act. He's heard people say it about his mother, and it used to make him furious. He’d punched Alexei for it, once, broken his nose when he said, why are you still moping over that selfish bitch, she left us without a thought, even though he knew it was his brother’s grief speaking and not his heart.

That word, selfish, made him so furious, maybe, because some small part of him believed it. Some part of himself, a part of him that he was too ashamed of to acknowledge, let alone to name, believed that his mother should have been braver. Should have been stronger. Should have fought harder to stay with him, to keep taking care of him. Would have, if she’d loved Ilya as much as she claimed to.

He knows now, now that he has Shane, that it isn’t true. He knows it is possible to love someone entirely, completely, with the purest and truest love, and for life to still be unbearable.
