Shane reached out without thinking, his fingers brushing against the rough fabric of Ilya’s jacket sleeve. Ilya flinched away. “Dun’ touch me!” Shane blinked, thrown. “What the - ” “I already have boyfriend!” Ilya declared, pulling his jacket around himself like a shield. “Are practically engaged!” Shane just stared. “Ilya. It’s me.” “Only my boyfriend may unwrap me.” Ilya announced. “Is respect.” Ilya gets drunk and refuses to be touched by anyone except his boyfriend. Unfortunately for Shane, Ilya does not realize his boyfriend is the one taking him home.

The top tweet read: Rozanov did not win that game. Hollander won it from the bench with VIBES and a JERSEY two sizes too big.

The side-by-side said it all: Ilya looking derailed by Shane casually adjusting his sleeve.

Another chimed in: THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MARRY YOUR CAPTAIN.

Ilya gets distracted mid-match because his husband wears his jersey.

Harris makes a PR decision. The internet makes it worse.

Featuring: one cursed jersey bet, one tired PR manager, and a fanbase that has decided Shane Hollander controls his husband with eye contact alone.

  3. There are many ways to support your favorite player. Attending their games, for instance. Buying their jersey. Or, if you're trying to keep a secret relationship under wraps, you could drive four hours in the opposite direction, wrap yourself in a dollar store blanket with eyeholes cut in it, and attempt to blend in with the locals. It's foolproof. Nothing could possibly go wrong. The internet would never figure it out.

“Freckles?” He askes and points to the dots on his cheekbones. Ilya nods in agreement and commits the word freckles to memory. “You like my freckles.” The blush is back when Shane realizes what he said.
Ilya has the sudden thought that this moment is important, a voice in his head that might sound like his mother, or might be his own that says, don’t fuck this up, not this one. Ilya decides very suddenly that he is going to listen, and against every instinct ingrained in him, decides to be honest.

“You forget English again, Rozanov? Are my vesnushki that distracting?”
Ilya laughed, caught off guard. “So you know Russian now, Shane Hollander?”

  5. "It was nothing, Ilya. Don't worry about it." "Ah," Ilya said, and something like understanding crossed his face. "Was about us, then." Shane pressed his forehead to Ilya's neck. Of course Shane couldn't just slip this by, of course he would be figured out. He wrapped Ilya up in a hug and moved his hand up and down his back, in a way that he hoped said it doesn't matter. "He just–after he checked me, I called him a dick, and then he said I'd need my big scary Russian husband to protect me. And then he called you a name, and…" Shane didn't know how to finish that sentence, so he let it trail off. And it felt so unfair. And I got more angry than I had any reason to. And I hate that I can't go one game without my sex life being brought up in some way. And it's happened a million other times, so why should I have cared on this one specific occasion? Over the course of the first half of his fifth season on the Centaurs, Shane considers retirement, homophobia, his public life, family, and his legacy. He also gets a tooth knocked out, visits the beach, and is repeatedly pissed off by how hot his husband is.

  7. “Shane?” Ilya asks again. “What happened?” His gloveless hand twitches and he lifts it a fraction of an inch towards Shane. Shane tosses his own gloves to the ice and reaches forward, lacing their fingers together. “You took a bad hit,” he says, gritting his teeth against the fear clawing at his guts. “Flipped headfirst into the ice. Are you okay?” Ilya groans in answer and squeezes his hand, though Shane can't tell if he meant to do that or not. Suddenly, there are people all around them. Shane shifts protectively close before he realizes it’s the medical team. “Hollander, get back to your bench,” someone says, but there’s no way Shane’s going. Even if he wanted to, Ilya’s gripping his hand like a lifeline, eyes finally locked on Shane’s face. Shane isn’t leaving him.

  10. + One Time They All Had His Back Set after the events of The Long Game. Ilya Rozanov was well known to be a menace. He liked living loud and never shied away from a fight. After Shane's transfer to the Ottawa Centaurs he settled in some ways, in others he got infinitely worse. One thing they hadn't accounted for was how disgustingly in love with his husband Ilya was. Ilya was not going to let them forget.

  11. Harris had an unofficial poll on a whiteboard in the media team’s office: Team Hollander vs Team Rozanov; something that apparently was never allowed to be revealed to the general public according to Harris’s strong warning the first time Wyatt had seen it. He had promptly and dramatically signed his name under Team Hollander, though he had to write small in the little space left. He had obviously landed up at the best team possible - at least when it came to being a fan of Shane Hollander. Then Ilya Rozanov was traded to Ottawa. Suddenly, Shane Hollander went from a Hockey God, whose presence Wyatt was graced with a few times a year, to the most talked about figure in the Centaurs locker room. Ilya Rozanov was not Shane Hollander, but he might as well be the second best thing. Who else knew Shane Hollander better than his rival? Here was a live, captive source of information. A practical Shane Hollander encyclopaedia. Or The Ottawa Centaurs accidentally end up being the Shane Hollander Unofficial Fan Club. And now, with Ilya on the team, Shane Hollander is always there! Wow!

  12. “It’s one of your superstitions, right?” Hayden asked. “Like my hat. It’s your good luck shirt.” Shane felt a chill run down his spine. He hadn’t thought anyone would notice. In truth, he’d barely noticed himself. It wasn’t something he was actively doing. It wasn’t like his weight circuit or his diet or his night routine. It wasn’t meditation or yoga or cross-training. Those were all things he did with meticulous, painstaking purpose. This was just… this was something else. This wasn’t thought driven. If he was being honest, it barely had to do with hockey. It maybe was one of the only things in his life that didn’t have to do with hockey. If he was stressed, he wore the shirt and it made him feel a little bit better. It just so happened that most of the time he was stressed about something to do with hockey. That was it. It was just a feeling. A feeling of calm that came from Ilya Rozanov’s shirt. 14. Shane put God on a back burner sometime between the ages of eleven and twelve. It was around that time that he barely stepped foot off the ice. His dad would joke that he was born with skates on, while his mother cursed out a grown man for a bad play. God, religion, faith came second to the rush of adrenaline as he flew on the ice. It takes seventeen years and the love of his life being dead for twenty-eight minutes to relearn how to pray. - Or, Shane's game is cancelled and he reads Ilya's would have been last messages in a tiny hotel room with JJ and Hayden at his side.

  15. He used to visit his mother all the time when he was in Moscow for the off-season. He’d take bouquets of marigolds and sunflowers, and he’d decorate her grave with them to try and brighten it up. He’d even placed a little solar powered lantern there for nighttime, so she wouldn’t feel so frightened of the dark. It’s silly, probably. He knows she isn’t really there; knows that nothing is left of her but bones, by now. But still. Ilya had left it there anyway, just in case. He’ll never get to visit his mama’s grave again.

  18. “My flight is early tomorrow,” Rozanov says. He bites his lip. Shane’s eyes stick there too. “You look in hallway, yes?” Shane sticks his head out. The hallway is empty. Would it hurt? To go another round? Rozanov has to fly out early anyway, it’s hardly like they’ll be spending time befriending each other. What is one night, when they’ve already crossed the line with eyes wide open? “Shit,” he says. “There’s a couple at the end of the hallway, arguing, you know? You better wait until they leave.” OR Shane lies, that first night, to keep Rozanov to himself a little longer. The changes spiral out from there.

  19. "And so, like, Roz is never at these things?" Barrett had asked. "Well, he's come once or twice." Bood had answered, a thoughtful face on. "We always invite him, though I know at this point he's going to be busy." "But what's he doing?" Barrett asked, his face crunched up. "It's an Ottawa Centaurs mystery." Harris was sitting next to Barrett and was grinning at him as he elaborated. "Just like how NHL star Ilya Rozanov gets traded, willingly and by his own choice, to Ottawa and yet, no one knows why he chose the team." Or The Ottawa Centaurs have their own theories about what their captain gets up to in his free time. Wyatt Hayes organizes a bet about it. If only getting an answer out of Rozanov would be easy.

I’ll send you flowers.” Shane’s fingers go into Ilya’s hair, and Ilya hears a mumbled, “I don’t need flowers,” before a moan drowns it out. -- or: Ilya and Shane sending each other flowers starts out as a joke, and then becomes like a confession.
