  2. Every year Shane always drove past their local pumpkin patch wondering if they were worth the hassle of going out into the patch to pick your own pumpkin. Pumpkin carving alone sounded like an entire sensory nightmare and going out into a patch full of plants sounded just as bad. He really didn't have a want to do it growing up, too busy with hockey but now he had a pup of his own and she needed to have a variety of experiences in her little life — according to his mom that was one of the things she wanted to do very badly with him but the first time they carved a pumpkin as a family, baby Shane (around a year old) cried, screamed and wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. Shane didn't want Sofia to be afraid and Ilya had been begging to go to one ever since Harris mentioned them at practice earlier that week. Or the one where they take Sofia to a pumpkin patch.

  3. "Shane," Ilya says slowly. "Are you aware you are holding a cat?"

Shane has the decency to look slightly sheepish, as Ilya steps forward, the kitten peering at him with large green eyes while he reaches out a hesitant hand to lightly brush his finger against the cat's nose.

"Um, so a funny thing happened," Shane begins, and Ilya knows he's about to launch into a lengthy explanation. "We were out for our jog, and this kitten started running with us, so Anya just gently picked it up by the scruff of its neck and started carrying it, and I couldn't just leave it, you know? And when I took it from Anya it just curled up in my jacket like it knew it was safe, and I know this is kind of impulsive and our lives are crazy, but…" he finally stops and takes a deep breath, his gaze locking with Ilya's. "I think I want to keep this cat."

Anya wags her tail and barks, and Ilya looks from Shane's endless dark brown eyes down to the striking green ones that close as the kitten yawns so widely Ilya can see all of its tiny baby teeth. It's too cute. He's a goner. 'Fuck', he thinks, 'I'm totally screwed' and then promptly sneezes.

  4. Shane realized they were going to have to bring Sofia to practice when his mom had called them earlier that morning to say she was sick that she couldn't keep Sofia for the day which meant they had to bring her with them. Naturally everyone agreed that they could help watch her for the day, pitching in to keep her entertained. Or the one where Sofia comes to practice and runs a tight ship.

  5. "Shane," Ilya interrupts, knowing that if he lets Shane go on much longer, he really will be on the next flight back. And as tempting as it is, he really likes all the free shit Shane gets to bring home and he's in desperate need of a new watch after the last barbecue at Bood's went slightly awry. "I'm fine, I just have lice."

There's a long pause, and though Ilya can't see Shane's face, he can imagine the exact look that's there. Forehead wrinkled, lips set in a thin line, his eyes moving slowly around the room as he tries to figure something out. "You're going to have to expand on that, I think."

"Turns out the sleepover I hosted for the Pikes had more than a few uninvited guests," Ilya offers and he hears Shane exhale in relief at the explanation, making a mental note to ask when he gets home exactly what other scenarios were playing out in Shane's overactive brain.

"I bet Hayden and Jackie feel awful."

Ilya has about twenty apology texts from Jackie he knows he needs to respond to. "Yes, they do."

"You're going to make Hayden suffer for this, aren't you?"

He grins, loving how well Shane knows him without even a hint as to what Ilya has planned. "Yes, I am."

Hi everyone! It’s been awhile. Sorry this chapter is late. I was traveling over the weekend and my plane almost crashed, it lost an engine mid-air but thankfully we landed safely and everyone is ok. But I was writing this chapter with the plane wifi so I lost half of my edits and had to rewrite it. Hope you enjoy!

  10. "Ah, you are going to prison," Ilya says as the door swings open. "I always knew they would get you. It's probably the time you tried to scam our neighbours with very overpriced lemonade and brownies."

Katya rolls her eyes at him as she pushes inside.

"Not everyone can get a million dollar hockey contract at 18."

"We should have bought her an apartment," Ilya says, turning to Shane.

"The website said they encourage people to live on campus for at least their first year. It's easier to make friends!"

Or, Katya Hollander-Rozanov is moving into her dorm at McGill. No one is handling it particularly well, but they're trying.

  12. It seems silly to ever, ever be sad when this is his life. Yet, the brilliant sunlight today seems to be tinged with a gray tone he can’t blink away. Thoughts of his mother, too. The beautiful, funny, brilliant woman who used to comb his messy curls and call him her little angel whenever she spoke to him. The woman who soothed his aches when he was hurt, who brushed the harsh words of his father right out of his ears with her own gentle ones. He gets why she left. He doesn’t blame her, not really. Sometimes, he thinks he might really understand it. Days like today, he thinks, which is a bit scary. -ilya has a bad mental health day on a babymoon trip to the cottage with shane and their daughter. his family is there for him-

“English is… is not first language,” the woman said quietly. Her accent was thick, and unmistakably Russian. “Oh, sorry! I’m speaking too fast, aren’t I? Sorry,” she took a breath, and held out her hand. “I’m Yuna,” she repeated. The woman took her hand quickly, her hands bony and delicate. “Irina,” she replied, before gesturing for Yuna to sit with her. Quickly, Yuna did. “Sorry, I have not been in Canada long.” “No problem at all; welcome to Canada! Is that your boy?” Yuna asked, gesturing over to the child that had similar hair to Irina, which was poking out from under his helmet. He was taller than Shane, though his little hockey outfit still seemed to still dwarf him. He had a serious look on his face, but his eyes were light as he watched the other boys play. He was tapping his stick on the ice, clearly itching to get into the game. “Ah, yes,” Irina nodded, taking a few seconds to translate the question, “Ilyusha.” Irina looked over at her son, a small smile on her face. “Is my Ilya.” Or: Ilya and Irina move to Canada for a fresh start when he is six years old. He meets Shane Hollander at ice hockey practice, and they grow up together (and of course, fall in love).

  16. “We are in hell, surely,” Ilya complains, sweat beading at his temples as he flops down on the couch beside Shane. “Why is it so hot? Is this what we get for having gay sex?” Shane fixes him with an unamused stare. “Because it’s barely 10am, and it’s already 34 degrees outside. Oh, and the AC is broken.” “I am going to kill myself.”

  17. Harris approached the team with the idea of prank wars. It would be innocent fun that everyone could take part in. It sounded fun to Ilya and he begged Shane to participate. "Pleaseeee, it will be so fun, Sofia will love it. We must teach her to not be so boring. To fight back against her genetics." So Shane decided to think of a good prank. One where no one got hurt, one that was simple good fun.

I do not want to,” Ilya interrupts. “Stay at home with my very sexy husband who is wearing his glasses, or go out to a club filled with people who are not you? The answer is very simple, Shane.” Shane rolls his eyes again, but he’s smiling as he saunters towards Ilya.

  19. “We need you to argue again,” Dykstra says suddenly.

A few seconds of silence follow, three sets, four if you include Haasy looking up uncertainly every couple of seconds, of eyes trained on them expectantly.

“You want us to argue?” Shane repeats slowly, confusedly.

Bood nods solemnly. “We played the best game of the fucking season after your argument—”

“It wasn’t because of our argument,” Shane tries to counter, but Ilya’s pretty sure he even knows it’s pointless.

“It was because of your argument,” Wyatt says. “You need to argue on game days.”

Dykstra points between Shane and Ilya. “We need you to argue tomorrow. No questions asked. You are the Captain and the Captain’s first man.”

“Sorry?” Shane says at the same time Ilya says, “No.”

Or the Ottawa Centaurs win a game after Shane and Ilya have a petty argument and turn it into a superstition. Texting fic edition.

  20. Stepping off the elevator, Eric turned left. Hands in his pocket, his walk the easy saunter of a man who is sure which room he’s staying in.

“Aren’t you that way?” Scotty was standing in front of the elevator, pointing to the right. Which was fair, because Eric’s room was indeed at that end of the hall.

“Nope,” Eric said and kept walking.
