  1. After spending an embarrassing amount of time researching baseball, I came to a realization: if Shane isn't playing hockey, then baseball is absolutely his next great love. It's a sport with one of the largest percentages of Asian players among the major North American leagues, and one that lets him push himself to the absolute limit as a rare two-way player. Honestly, what more could Shane ask for?

Yuri, from Tadaima, Okaeri, is back! This time, she's the daughter of Alpha!Ilya and Omega!Shane, who are now captains of the Boston Bears and the Boston Red Sox, respectively.

I really hope you'll enjoy Out of Left Field. ❤️

    “Ah.”

“‘Ah’,” Ilya repeats, giving him a look before he looks back to the tidily stacked frozen mouse packages in the freezer and makes a face as a little badly-hidden shudder moves through him. “Why the fuck do you have mice in your freezer, Shane? You are doing serial killer shit now? This is why you have cottage in the middle of nowhere? For serial killer things?”

    “It’s for Spaghetti,” Shane says.

Ilya gives him an absolutely horrified look at that and turns a little green, which makes him remember that Spaghetti isn’t just his snake's name.

“Not food!” He rushes to explain. “Not food spaghetti! Snake Spaghetti!”

“What the fuck are you even saying right now,” Ilya says, looking honestly a little concerned that Shane might have something going wrong in his head.

(Distancing himself from almost twenty years of owning a snake, Shane can indeed see why this situation might be a little alarming for someone on the outside looking in.)

(It also clues him in to the fact that maybe it’s not just Spaghetti who should have gotten a little adjustment period.)

  3. Things like this didn't happen to other people; Shane knew that. He’d been alive long enough to experience the confused glances and exasperated scoffs that always accompanied his discomfort with things other people didn't even notice. He would not fuck this up – not because he couldn't handle the way the sheets touched his skin. The burning of his skin spread to his eyes as his vision blurred. He squeezed his eyes shut and scrubbed his hands over his face. He would not cry. The tears fell hot and silent. They pooled at the curve of his jaw and around his chin, puddles of shame and self-contempt. Fucking breathe, he told himself, as he turned the faucet of the shower as far as it could go. He stood watching the water pool around his feet and slip down the drain until he heard Ilya stir. At first, he wasn't sure if he had really heard his name. “Shane?… Shane?” He wanted to yell back, assure Ilya everything was fine, but when he opened his mouth, only a squeak escaped. “Moya lyubov?” He cleared his throat and tried again: “In here.”

“Go?” Rozanov repeats, and Shane thinks he manages to nod, thinks he manages to spin some kind of excuse that he knows Rozanov doesn’t really buy, but he needs to go. He needs to get out of here. He needs to find somewhere quiet and calm where he can ride out this panic and painful tightness until he can catch his breath again. He needs-

    He needs to go.

“I’m sorry,” he says, turning heel and resisting the urge to just book it right for the front door only because he’d rather not have to explain to Hayden why he returned from a hookup with Boston Lily in men’s clothes that he certainly didn’t leave in.

It’s not until he makes it halfway up the stairs to Rozanov’s bedroom that it occurs to him in a cold rush that it isn’t just anxiety that makes it this hard to breathe.

“No,” he tells himself firmly, white knuckling the bannister and trying to take a deep breath just to prove that he can.

    It wheezes.

It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof. But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together. (how ilya learns about shane's food allergies) (and how shane learns what it's like to have someone who always saves him a seat at the table) (and who also makes sure there's food he can eat on the table to start with)

  7. Shane was still trying to settle Max, cupping the back of his head, pressing him back against his chest. Body warmth, familiar scent—that was supposed to be enough. That was supposed to be some innate thing, some animalistic pull newborns had toward their parents, hardwired in them from the beginning. Shane had read that. He was pretty sure he had read that. It was probably really bad that his baby didn't have it toward him. Or, Shane is not bonding with his new baby.

“Luch-Shane,” Ilya says, catching himself only at the last moment before he breaks their no pet names in the workplace rule. “Why don’t you get some air, yes? We can-”

Shane’s anxiety takes a quick backseat to annoyance once more, at being handled like a child instead of a grown man, like he hasn’t been doing this just as long as Ilya, like he needs someone to tell him when to take a break.

Like he deserved to have everything taken away from him because he couldn’t handle it to start with.

“I’m fine,” he says, voice icy.

The step he takes away is too big, farther than he meant to get from Ilya’s side, and the air between them feels both charged and icy.

He isn’t quite bold enough to try and fix it.

(shane is married and on the same team as his husband) (and all it cost him was his whole career and the life he spent years building beforehand) (but it's fine, really) (it's all so very, very fucking fine)

  9. Being a good father and a good husband turned out not to require anything extraordinary. All Ilya had to do was hold his son upright while he cried. Reach for his husband’s hand when everything else felt fragile enough to break. Explaining why. Explaining it again. Apologizing when he was wrong and letting himself be forgiven, too. Stay—especially on the days when staying felt like a decision he had already, once, been afraid he might not make. Do it again tomorrow. And tomorrow, Ilya learned, was no longer frightening when it looked back at him through brown eyes.

“That’s not-” Shane starts, but he stops himself. Ilya tilts his head slightly in question, but Shane bites the inside of his cheek and then shakes his head slightly, cheeks flushing. “I do trust you,” Shane says.

“But not with your car?” Ilya asks. “You are afraid I will drive all the boring out of it?”

    Shane rolls his eyes.

“It’s a good car-” He starts in another refrain of one of his favorite summer songs.

Ilya rolls them and pins his boyfriend under him before he has to hear about four wheel drive and gas mileage again.

There are far better uses for Shane’s mouth, after all.

  14. “Or Mexico,” Ilya says. “So you can be so boring and not drink tequila.” He expects Shane to maybe laugh, or get bossy and tell Ilya to get on with it. He does not expect him to go stock- still in his arms and fall completely silent. “Shane?” “I – I,” Shane stammers. “I don’t want to go there.” He doesn’t sound happy any more, at all. He sounds scared and confused. Ilya’s mind has started to race but he forces his voice to stay calm. He has only heard Shane mention Mexico twice, once to say his parents were going there on holiday. Once when Ilya asked about other men Shane’s been with. --- Ilya and Shane talk about Shane's encounter with another guy that time in Mexico. Shane doesn't have good memories. Shane’s autism makes love complicated—until Ilya makes it safe. Shane Hollander loves deeply—but quietly. Crowded rooms, public affection, and the constant noise of the world weigh on him in ways he struggles to explain, especially when standing beside someone as open and radiant as his husband. Shane’s autism shapes how he experiences love, touch, and connection, often leaving him trapped in his own head, convinced he isn’t enough. Ilya knows better. Through gentle control, unwavering patience, and fierce devotion, Ilya becomes Shane’s anchor—guiding him back into his body, his breath, and the safety of being loved exactly as he is. Across moments of vulnerability, intimacy, and raw honesty, Shane must learn to voice his fears and trust that his differences are not a burden, but something Ilya cherishes. This is a story about quiet love, consent spoken and unspoken, and two men choosing each other again and again—softly, fiercely, forever.
