  3. It is December, and Scott has been out for long enough to pretend to be used to it, and things are not perfect but they’re fucking good, and Ilya Rozanov is at his apartment for dinner—has been for over an hour—and he’s still waiting so stupidly hopefully to introduce a boyfriend who very, very clearly isn’t coming.

  6. Most people were surprisingly okay with Scott's very public coming out and a few took it upon themselves to wish him well after the speech at the awards ceremony. It was great but now Scott is just looking forward to a more normal night with the guys when he gets interrupted by Dallas Kent. Luckily someone else is willing to speak up for him, even if it's not who Scott would expect.

  7. “You said Rozanov is a great captain,” one of the reporters says, deviating from the usual script. “What makes him one? Do you think he’s better than you?”

If Ilya was here, Shane would immediately answer with a negative. He would also let Ilya be the one to brag about his many, many accomplishments, and maybe banter with him about who’s got more.

    But Ilya’s not here.

    And Shane is bored.

  8. Rozanov made a dismissive noise. “No, no, I will pick you up. Send me your address.”

“I’m not giving you my home address.”

    “Why not!”

“Because you’ll probably post it on social media to psych me out before our next game.”

That made Rozanov laugh. “It is good idea,” he said. Stopped laughing. Started again. Blew out a breath like he had to get himself together. “I might do this to you,” he allowed, “but you have nice boyfriend living with you now. I would not do this to him. You are safe.”

  9. Scott watched as Hollander leaned in, further, to hear Rozanov. This was the part that didn’t entirely make sense to him. The missing piece of something that felt like it was just beyond his reach. This was quiet ease and small moments of comfort and a look that makes the rest of the world fade away. This was how he felt with Kip.

    Scott stilled.

It was as if someone had whispered it in his ear. It was as if the final piece of this insane, deranged puzzle finally clicked into place. His heart was pounding in his ears. He was probably wrong. In fact he was entirely wrong. This wasn’t like him and Kip. It couldn’t be Kip. Scott had been watching too many romantic comedies. His head was in the clouds.

    But they weren’t touching.

Hollander and Rozanov were as close as they could be, without laying a single finger on one another. They were specifically, rigidly, separate. The warmth between them was bridled. Entirely. And this, Scott realized, his heart sinking into the floor, was also how he had felt with Kip.

    Oh. Oh fuck.

  10. His throat felt thick and Scott coughed to hide the hitch in his breathing. "I’m not ashamed of who I am. I love Kip. I've won a Stanley Cup and made history as the first out MLH player. I think we could win the cup again this year, or at least make it through a couple rounds of the playoffs because our team is incredible. So fucking what I’m inconvenienced by showering last? It’s worth it."

  11. "U-haul lesbian?” Scott parotted. He was getting too old to keep up with all these new terms. “You own gay sports bar, yes?” Ilya was looking at him like he was an idiot again, “isn’t that where all the lesbians go? Shouldn’t you know these things?” Scott opened his mouth to reply but it was quickly intercepted by a yelp when a foot caught him sharply in the shin. “Shit sorry!” Shane bolted upright looking more alert than he had in the last 30 minutes, “I meant to kick Ilya”. He then kicked Ilya under the table,

It's been over a year since Ilya stopped hurting himself, but an accidental kitchen mishap nearly sends him spiraling. Good thing Scott and Kip are there to help him through it.

  14. Summer in Russia was never easy for Ilya. His father's insults, Alexei's never-ending greed, the secrets he had to keep - it was a heavy weight to carry.

But now he is finally free, with a few weeks left until hockey season, and an itch to scratch. So he books a ticket to Spain, where no one cares about hockey, or who Ilya Rozanov is and who he fucks.

Things are going well until one night, Ilya gets roofied at a gay club and is saved by none other than Scott Hunter.

  15. Then Scott Hunter looked at him, really looked at him with no panic or consternation or grief, just something heavy and piercing that made Ilya feel like his heart was on the outside of his ribcage. “Be safe out there, okay?”

“Okay,” Ilya said, softer than intended.

In real life, they both turned around and walked away into the night. But in Ilya’s memory, that never happens. They just stand there, eye-to-eye, until the sun comes up and it’s too bright to see anything else.

  16. Svetlana knows about Jane. It's frankly insulting for Ilyusha to think otherwise. She just never expected to have to call him for help. During the Olympics. In Russia. In the dead of night. - Or, it's Sochi 2014 and Russia has lost to Latvia. Grigori Rozanov, not yet compromised by illness, punishes his son for shaming the family. When Svetlana finds an injured and emotionally fragile Ilya, she knows she needs somewhere safe for him to recover. And there's only one person in Russia who Sveta trusts with her Ilyusha: Canada's Golden Boy, Shane Hollander.

After hooking up with a man in Mexico in Summer 2014, Shane Hollander receives an explicit video file and a request for $10,000. He pays the money, and hopes that is the end of it.

    It is not.

At the 2015 All Stars, after months of pretending everything was fine, Shane's house of cards comes tumbling down.

  18. Scott and Ilya put up a united front against all the homophobic assholes in the league. Well, maybe not that united. But at least they're changing the narrative a bit, one homophobe at a time.

  19. Following Shane and Scott's fight on the ice, Ilya completely loses his mind, and thinks it's a good idea to break into Scott's home and attempt to physically assault him for an, at worst, ambiguously homophobic comment (and, far more likely, a mere jab at their famous rivalry). Scott informs him that, not only does he not have any idea about Shane and Ilya (because he has a life, and is not a television viewer following their actions at all times, nor does he have an encyclopedic memory of every awkward encounter he's had over the last few years) but that his actions are downright illegal, not to mention insanely homophobic.

Or: the author is a gay man who has seen way too many fics with this disgustingly homophobic premise, and he is so very tired.

  20. “Scott Hunter is next door, yes?”

“No way we're asking him for help. What would we even say? Hey Hunter, we were just fucking each other next door, and I broke my leg, and by the way, we think you're gay, so wanna help us?”

    Or

Ilya and Shane just spent a great night together after the All-Star Game. Life is good.

Until Shane trips and breaks his leg, and they have to figure out what to do so he isn't found in his biggest rival's hotel room at 2 am.

Ilya has an idea. It involves asking Scott Hunter for help.
