  1. Ilya’s perspective of a few scenes from “something you can build” (and one scene that came after). Featuring: intense yearning for your committed long-term partner, supportive but confused himbos, Yuna Hollander’s momager energy, Scott realizing he’s a side character in someone else’s even crazier story, and a quick trip to California for Very Boring, Extremely Casual, Not-At-All-Romantic Reasons (aka, the epilogue).

(Companion piece! You will need to have read the rest of the series for this to make any sense—here be spoilers!)

  3. “Why are you here?”

“You see,” Rozanov drawls, “twenty-two years ago, my parents decide they fuck and –”

“Ugh. Shut up.” Shane scowls. “No, I mean – why here?” why now?

The smirk slides off Rozanov’s face. “They want –” he swallows, bringing one arm up to drape over his eyes. “The team I play for. During lockout. They… disagree about rest of season. Tell me I stay.”

    “But they can’t do that!”

Rozanov gives him a sardonic smirk.

When Rozanov’s Russian team doesn’t want to let him return to the MLH after the 2012-13 lockout, Shane finds himself pulled into a harebrained scheme to make sure his rival is safe – and it might just work. Now he only has to navigate a secret pretend relationship while also facing the condensed MLH season. But needs must, right?

  8. Ilya watches as, with shaking fingers, Shane presses something on his phone and turns it to him.

There is an article open. Ilya sees… a photo of him at Shane’s house in Montreal. A side by side comparison of them, wearing—sharing—the same shirts, and hoodies. Shane’s car driving through the gates at Ilya’s new house.

Shane hiccups, tears streaming down his cheeks.

    “They figured us out.”

  9. “My husband won’t like you touching me like this.” “Husband, eh? You’re married?” Ilya can feel the sleepy rumble of the man’s voice against his back. He presses further into it, folding his own hand over the one that’s splayed against his stomach, and slotting their fingers together. “Yes. He will be very sad when he finds out I am in bed with second best hockey player in NHL.”

  10. He reached into his pocket for his phone and fuck– he was still wearing Rozanov’s clothes. They smelt like him. He couldn’t go back inside now to get his own, that would make for even more embarrassment. I just need to get out of here, far away. He opened his phone and tried to call an Uber, but his vision was so blurry from unshed tears, he couldn't see a thing on the screen. What the fuck was he doing? Ilya is never going to talk to him again and he’s out here on the ground having a fucking panic attack. Or, what if when Shane leaves Ilya on the couch, he only makes it past the front door before breaking down?

  11. Shane picks up on the third ring.

    “What?”

Ilya closes his eyes, humiliation twisting his gut. Still, though, it’s nice to hear his voice. His shoulders sag a little. “Hollander?”

“I don’t–” Shane sighs, long and heavy. “Why are you calling?”

Why is he calling? Ilya couldn’t answer. Not in any way that makes sense, anyway.

Voice wobbling, Ilya says, “I am sorry.” He inhales, breath hitching horribly. “Was mistake.”

On the other line, Shane goes quiet. Then, shuffling around, he says, “What’s going on, Rozanov?”

Or: Ilya calls Shane in the middle of the night, and against his better judgment, Shane comes to find him.

  12. Shane had truly believed that the worst was behind them.

Mostly because his barometer for ‘worst’ had been recalibrated from a weighted mass of worry lodged in the base of his throat about league reactions, and the strain of hiding his heart, rewritten in an instant where he'd known that the worst was actually a notification bubble in a corner where it never showed, next to a name that taught Shane what it was worth to be alive at all; that opened up and spelled terror and the end of the whole goddamn world—but then it wasn't. They didn't end. Shane didn't lose. They made it through the worst.

Surely that meant everything would be okay moving forward, since they'd already survived the worst.

    __________

Or: Shane genuinely does believe they've made it through the storm, that the worst came for them and they walked out okay. Breathing. Alive. Together.

Shane—waiting for his fiancé in a hotel room, watching the man he loves more than life collapse on the ice in high definition, the light vanishing from his eyes, the feed cutting just before a crash cart descends upon him—

Shane realizes swiftly—painfully—that he was really fucking wrong.

  15. Ilya opened one of his messages. Have you seen the news? Ilya, call me. Now. Please tell me you already fucking know. Jesus Christ, man. That was it. No context. No explanation. Just panic wrapped in vague bullshit. His jaw locked. “Are you fucking serious right now,” he muttered, thumb scrolling harder than necessary. Say it or don’t, you assholes. The half-answers made his skin crawl. It felt like they were all circling something awful, whispering around it, waiting for him to step close enough to get hit. His chest felt tight now, pressure building, so he did the one thing that made sense. He opened social media. Shane Hollander’s name was everywhere. Or Shane was hurt in ways everyone could see, and in ways only Ilya would carry.

  16. He doesn’t remember any part of that night that didn’t involve Shane. He doesn’t remember the woman’s name, or what she looked like, or even why he didn’t go home with her. All of that was insignificant, a blur that faded into nothingness.

  18. “Shane was his constant. His safety net. Because he knew that no matter how unpredictable his life at home got, he would always have Shane, ready to comfort him, ready to be whatever it was that Ilya needed.” Or Ilya needs Shane after his father’s death but doesn’t want to be a burden. But it’s okay because Shane knows exactly what Ilya needs. Loosely based on the song “I don’t like darkness” by Chase Atlantic.
