  1. Shane picks up on the third ring.

    “What?”

Ilya closes his eyes, humiliation twisting his gut. Still, though, it’s nice to hear his voice. His shoulders sag a little. “Hollander?”

“I don’t–” Shane sighs, long and heavy. “Why are you calling?”

Why is he calling? Ilya couldn’t answer. Not in any way that makes sense, anyway.

Voice wobbling, Ilya says, “I am sorry.” He inhales, breath hitching horribly. “Was mistake.”

On the other line, Shane goes quiet. Then, shuffling around, he says, “What’s going on, Rozanov?”

Or: Ilya calls Shane in the middle of the night, and against his better judgment, Shane comes to find him.

  2. "Let's see who cracks first then." "Is that a fucking challenge, Rozanov?" He asks with a shit eating grin on his face. "You bet it is." "Alright." Shane extends a hand. "Bring it on." And oh, Ilya intends to. Ilya loved days like this. It was sunny, the kind of sunny that made the grumpiest people happy. The Canadian birds were chipping away and Shane was playing some God awful music. The lake was calm, glassy in places, broken only by the soft lap of water against the dock. Shane had taken over the entire cottage with noise and movement- bare feet on wood, the screen door slamming, laughter echoing out across the trees. Ilya loved the way the air smelled like pine and warm water , loved the ache in his shoulders from swimming too long, loved lazy lunches that stretched into the afternoon and conversations that didn’t go anywhere important. He loved how quiet his mind felt here, how the days asked nothing of him except to be present. But most of all Illya loves that all of his days seemed to be like this. His stay at the cottage has been extended so many times both he and Shane know he'll be here as long as possible, likely untill start of the season. "Do you want ice-cream?" Shane asks, sitting down on the swing while purposely letting their legs touch as he types something onto his phone. "Dad says there was a discount at the store, he could drop us off some." "Hollander, do your parents know you're a millionaire?" Illy scoffs, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. "So, you don't want the ice-cream?" "Of course I do." He grins, looking out over the lake. "When can David bring it to us?" "Stop calling him David, it's weird." Shane grumbles, furrowing his brows. "What should I call him?" Illya smiles, reaching over and soothing his eyebrows because he can. He can just reach over and do little things without it being questioned, without Shane wondering why he's doing it. Because it's not weird to cuddle your boyfriend, it's not weird to soothe him or even call him nicknames. Ilya wonders if Shane would like that. What would they even call eachother? "He'll bring it over in like 20 minutes." Shane says, breaking him away from his thoughts. "Good." He says, letting his fingers go up into Shane's hair and watching as the other man molds into it, sliding closer and letting Ilya play with his hair. "You're very easy." "Excuse me?" He finally puts down his phone, his gaze, although offended, finally landing on Ilya. "I am not easy." "You are, Hollander. Let's be honest." Ilya grins, God he loves fireing him up. "Fuck off." Shane scoffs, pulling back a bit. "You're easier than me." "I am not." He says, getting offended himself even when he knows they're both purposely firing eachother up. "Even if I was, I am better at resisting than you." "You are not." Shane says, staring him down. "It's not my fault you're the one always staring things. If I even tried you would fold so fast." Ilya stares at him, Shane cannot possibly be serious. They have been doing this for the better part of a decade and it is very obvious Shane has always been easier. It started with him being less experienced and following Ilya's lead but over the years it's just the way they work. Yes, Ilya starts things but that's because Shane always goes for it with enthusiasm. "Is that so?" He raises his eyebrows. "Try then. Let's see who cracks first." "Is that a fucking challenge, Rozanov?" He asks with a shit eating grin on his face. "You bet it is." "Alright, game on." Shane extends a hand. "Bring it on." And oh, Ilya intends to. He, of course, is the first to make a move and it's as soon as just ten minutes later when David brings them ice cream. They're eating it in the kitchen, still mildly bantering about who will last longer, when he starts. He holds Shanes eyes, sucking the vanilla ice-cream off the tip of his spoon. He watches Shane's lips part and does it again, letting some ice cream drip out and off the corner of his lip before slowly licking it. Ilya knows he has a big ego, he has always been told so, but he knows it's not just his ego talking when it comes to giving head. Ilya is amazing at it, he's amazing with his mouth and he knows Shane knows so. He knows Shane is thinking about it as he watches his suck the spoon. "Fuck you." Shane whispers. "That's playing dirty." "Nei." Ilya shakes his head, putting the spoon down. "It's playing exactly as this is to be played." "Whatever." Shane says, looking away. Ilya grins, watching the skin under his freckles darken. That evening, as he's sitting at the couch and scrolling through his phone he can feel Shane come up behind him. His elbows rest on the backrest of the couch right behind Ilya and he leans in, whispering into his ear. For a moment Ilya thinks his brain is messing with him, that he's forgotten English words again but then he catches up, realising Shane is whispering French into his ear. "Fuck off with that croissant shit." He says with a chuckle. He knows what Shane was going for but Ilya prefers his dirty talk in languages he understands.

  5. Let's pretend that Shane and Ilya's sunset beach scene took place the night before the All-Star game, and Shane's gay confession is slightly overshadowed by Ilya's reaction to an injury on the ice. As the 2017 All-Star game draws to a close, you have to admire Shane Hollander’s leadership on the ice tonight. With the chemistry we are seeing from his team, you would think these players have been training together all season. Notably, this includes long-time rival Ilya Rozanov—and while it may come as a surprise, it’s clear that Hollander and Rozanov’s competitive history is not getting in the way of them working seamlessly together on the ice. It’s also clear that captain Aaron Eriksson is not going to be able to squeeze out a win against this powerful duo tonight. Rozanov with the puck now, with a beautiful pass to Hollander as they move to further solidify their victory, and ouch—Hollander just took a hard hit from Eriksson. That did not look good. There’s Scott Hunter helping Hollander to his feet now. Hollander’s waving away the medics, but you can tell he’s hurt. Looks like a possible broken rib. Who knows what this could mean for Montreal’s remaining season, but It’s safe to say that Hollander will not be finishing this All-Star game on the ice. And here comes Ilya Rozanov— boy, he is not happy. He’s confronting Eriksson now. This looks like it could get ugly. There go the gloves... And ouch, that is a powerful right hook from Rozanov. With three minutes left in the period, Hollander’s injury won’t prevent his team from clinching the victory, but it looks like Rozanov is going to be watching the remainder of this game from the penalty box. Later, when Ilya knocked on his hotel room door, Shane pulled him inside looking furious. “That was so fucking stupid, Rozanov, what were you thinking?” he hissed. Ilya just smirked. “Was thinking Eriksson would look pretty with less teeth.” In his deep voice it almost sounded sensual. “You can’t—that was so obvious, people are going to talk—” Shane said, eyes wild and anxious. Ilya looked at him like he was an idiot. “And they say what? I hit him, so this means you and I are fucking?” He rolled his eyes, but there was a fondness in his expression that never failed to make Shane feel breathless. “I need your permission to throw punch, now?” “It was reckless,” Shane argued. “Eriksson had it coming. I would have done same thing if he came after any teammate.” It was a lie, and they both knew it. “Only asshole would play dirty in stupid All-Star game.” “It was a clean hit.” “Was not. His elbow—” “I watched it back, Rozanov, it was clean,” Shane interrupted him, voice firm. “And so what?” Ilya sounded exasperated. “Is hockey. Sometimes people get punched. You never play before?” “Fuck you.” A smile was tugging at Shane’s lips despite himself. Ilya smiled back at him for a moment, but then his eyebrows drew together in concern. “How are your ribs?” “They’re fine—that’s not what I’m worried about right now.” “Is what I worry about. Show me,” he demanded. As always, Shane’s first instinct was to obey his order without question. He managed to keep himself from immediately raising his shirt, because Ilya couldn’t have everything he wanted from him all the fucking time. “Ilya.” “Shane,” Ilya said mockingly, and he stepped forward, crowding Shane against the bed until he was forced to sit down on the edge of the mattress. “Show.” With a heavy sigh, Shane lifted the hem of his t-shirt to expose the purple bruises starting to bloom over the right side of his ribcage. Ilya reached down to trace his fingers along the mottled skin, and Shane hissed at the sensation. “Is not so bad,” Ilya said appraisingly. You will recover before playoffs.” “I know that, you asshole. Which is why it was fucking stupid of you to deck Eriksson over nothing.” Shane felt a tiny bit of satisfaction from being right. But mostly he still felt mad at Ilya for risking everything because of his stupid temper. “It looked worse on the ice.” “I don’t care!” Shane snapped. “I don’t need you fighting my battles for me, Rozanov.” Ilya stared at him, looking deeply unimpressed. “Ah, so you were going to punch him, then?” he said pointedly. “It was a clean hit—” “So you say.” “Do you want me to pull up the clip and show you?” Shane said, tugging his phone out of his pocket, ready to do just that. “No, no, no. I do not want to watch you get hurt again.” There was something tender in Ilya’s expression, but it quickly shifted back to the cocky arrogance Shane was used to. “But you would like to see my punch again, da?” he teased. “Definitely not.” Another lie. Ilya was grinning now, and it was almost terrifying how much Shane wanted to kiss him.

  7. “I am normal,” says Shane, rearranging his silverware on the table. “And I will pass Logic, ignore Ilya Rozanov, and continue to be normal forever until I die.” When he reaches for Rose’s fork to move it parallel to her plate, she grabs his wrist and gently sets it on the table.
