  1. Ilya suddenly cleared his throat, squared his shoulders, lifted his chin with a strange expression and began reciting poetry in Russian.

    Shane's jaw dropped.

“...anyway, he cut his wrists, wrote this poem with his blood, and hanged himself. What?”

Shane closed his mouth, shook his head, and finally said,

“When I came here, I expected a lot of things. I don't know that you'd make me drink litres of vodka or something like that. But not poetry in a cemetery, I admit, I didn't see it coming.”

    ...

NHL 2012 Lockout. Hollander comes to Moscow to play in the KHL and learns two things: Moscow landlords don't particularly like renting to Asians, and Ilya Rozanov has a spare room.

  2. “Hollander?” a voice asks from deeper in the flat. It is decidedly not a girl’s voice. “Hollander, what is – oh.”

Yuna looks from her son to the person who has appeared behind his shoulder: Ilya Rozanov, naked except for a towel. Yuna’s eyebrows go back up as she looks from Rozanov back to Shane.

With a sigh that seems to deflate the tension in his body, Shane closes his eyes for a moment, and then finally steps aside. “Okay, maybe it’s best you do come inside.”

Yuna and David just mean to surprise their son before the season starts. Except Shane isn’t home alone – and his unexpected visitor turns out to have a problem that is right up Yuna’s alley. What would they have done without her? Probably something stupid, like pretended to get married.

  3. “Why are you here?”

“You see,” Rozanov drawls, “twenty-two years ago, my parents decide they fuck and –”

“Ugh. Shut up.” Shane scowls. “No, I mean – why here?” why now?

The smirk slides off Rozanov’s face. “They want –” he swallows, bringing one arm up to drape over his eyes. “The team I play for. During lockout. They… disagree about rest of season. Tell me I stay.”

    “But they can’t do that!”

Rozanov gives him a sardonic smirk.

When Rozanov’s Russian team doesn’t want to let him return to the MLH after the 2012-13 lockout, Shane finds himself pulled into a harebrained scheme to make sure his rival is safe – and it might just work. Now he only has to navigate a secret pretend relationship while also facing the condensed MLH season. But needs must, right?
