A snowstorm strands the Boston Bears in Montreal with not enough hotel rooms and nowhere to go in their rival’s city.
On a reckless impulse, Ilya volunteers to stay with Shane Hollander.
His teammates think it’s a joke.
Shane plays along.

Shane picks up on the third ring.
“What?”
Ilya closes his eyes, humiliation twisting his gut. Still, though, it’s nice to hear his voice. His shoulders sag a little. “Hollander?”
“I don’t–” Shane sighs, long and heavy. “Why are you calling?”
Why is he calling? Ilya couldn’t answer. Not in any way that makes sense, anyway.
Voice wobbling, Ilya says, “I am sorry.” He inhales, breath hitching horribly. “Was mistake.”
On the other line, Shane goes quiet. Then, shuffling around, he says, “What’s going on, Rozanov?”
Or: Ilya calls Shane in the middle of the night, and against his better judgment, Shane comes to find him.

The puppy sniffed the hard plastic toe of Shane's skate, and then sat down squarely on his foot, as if claiming territory. “If we leave the dog,” Ilya said, “you will think about it all night. You will play like shit tomorrow. And then I will have to listen to you be sad about that for a week.” A defeated sound escaped Shane. “…Damn it.” After a secluded practice session, Shane and Ilya find a cold golden retriever in the middle of a snowstorm - and a sudden power outage. Shane does not spiral (he does). Ilya absolutely does not get jealous of a puppy (he does).
