"In the songs the old women sing, the forest does not offer mercy… it only offers trades. When Anzhelina was fourteen, she walked into the deepest thicket to find the Young Wolf, Ruslan Dragunov. She did not go with tears; she went with a crown of iron and a heart of flint. She offered him a life for a life: she would be the moon to his tide, the lioness to his pride, and the mother to his heirs, if only he would tear the throat from the Great Bear, Grigori. Ilya still wonders if the North Wind blew too hard that night, or if it was Lina’s own hand that guided the Wolf ’s teeth toward their brother Andrei, too. Perhaps he was a branch that always needed breaking. That was the night the girl died, and the Queen of the Fortress was born. She traded her spring so her brothers could finally see the summer."

On very bad nights, Lyosha lets himself look. He pulls up KHL scores, reads articles about Dynamo’s powerplay. After a while, he wanders into articles about ex-KHL players who play for the MLH now. He’s a Dynamo diehard, of course, and prefers the KHL, but he’s a casual Valery Garipov fan, and it would not be a surprise to anyone that he occasionally keeps tabs on how the Puffins are doing. It would not be a red flag, to anyone watching.
The Puffins are not doing so well, as it happens. Not like another team, that leads the league and dominates conversations, to the point that even articles about the Puffins can’t help talking about them. To the point that sometimes, sometimes, there are even stray pictures. Nothing that Lyosha will ever linger on. He is his father’s son. He lives in Moscow. He has a daughter who is fifteen.

Ilya and Shane settle whose name goes first with a one-on-one scrimmage. Shane wins. Ilya finds, to his own surprise, that he doesn't mind at all — and that turns out to be the easier question. The harder one is the middle name he's carried his whole life: Grigoryevich. Son of Grigori. He doesn't want to be Grigori's son anymore. He wants to be his mother's.

Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.
But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.
or: Ilya's father doesn't die during the 2016/2017 season. His brother does.

Aleksei is seven when his father remarries. He is nine when Yulia is born.
If things had been a little different, he would have hated her. He was prone to envy at that stage: restless, anxious, without purpose. Jealousy would have eaten him through and left room for something uglier to move in. It doesn’t, because Yulia loves him first.
Aleksei is nine and furious at the world, and he doesn’t stand a chance. His heart cracks, breaks and swallows her whole.

"What happened?"
Ilya swallowed hard, his mouth dry as paper.
"Alexei and Zarina..." He started, and the words felt strange, distant, as if they belonged to someone else's life. "...got into a car accident."
He felt Shane's hands lightly squeeze his waist, his husband's body tensing behind him. He turned around to face him and saw the shock in the brown eyes, the slow, terrible realization of what that could mean.
"Zarina died on the spot," Ilya continued, his voice monotonous, numb. "Alexei was severely injured. He's in a coma."
"And?" Shane asked, but Ilya knew he was already connecting the dots. He knew the family history, he knew Polina, he knew enough to see where this was going. "What about your nieces?"
"That's exactly why Sasha called me." Ilya ran his tongue over his chapped lips. "Polina, my dad's widow, would never take on that responsibility. She's always hated the girls, always treated them like a burden. And I..." His voice cracked for a second. "I'm the closest relative. The only one left."

Men do not cry. Ilya knows this, as much as he knows that being strong is only part of the battle ahead of him; being seen to be strong matters more. Ilya is twelve years old, and no longer a child. It has been four long, brittle days since his mother— since her accident.
The practice rink is busy, tonight. Under the stern tutelage of Coach Baranov, everyone here is fighting to justify their time on the ice. Hockey, Baranov tells them, often, is not a team sport. Hockey is an act of violence, and of endurance.
Ilya believes he is practiced at both.

“What is there to talk about?” “What’s there to talk about?!” Hollander scoffed, shaking his head. “You’re playing for my fucking team!” “I know.” “Why did you have to go and get traded?! You realise we’re going to have to see each other every day from now on, and play together, and-” “Yes,” Ilya interrupted. He didn’t want to know how long Hollander’s list was. “I know.” Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?” “Right.” “And we can’t- can’t hook up anymore.” ~ OR: Ilya gets traded to Montreal in October 2014. Ilya knew he had fucked up the moment he'd said it. But he hadn't been able to help it.
He had known earlier that day when he had double checked his refrigerator to make sure the Canada Dry ginger ale he had bought the day before hadn't sprouted wings and flown away. And he had known when he had researched easy recipes of things he could make that fit Hollander's strict performance diet earlier that week that they were playing a dangerous game.
The two of them were Rozanov and Hollander, and that was all they could ever be. Ilya knew that. They were Hollander and Rozanov to the public, to the media, to their teammates, to their coaches, and they were supposed to be that to each other as well.
But Ilya had called him Shane. And then Shane had left.
Or:

"I’m sorry, I am just—” He drops his fork to wave his hand around, the way he does when he's searching for the proper word. He knows enough English words to describe what it is he’s feeling, but they don’t feel like adequate descriptors. My father, the man I loathe, is dying, and there is nothing I can do to save him. Everyone in my life expects so little of me, and I feel as though I may disappear. I feel like, if I did disappear, perhaps the world would be all the better for it. You are the only man in my life who has made me feel happy to take up space. Shane, tell me, what is the English word for this?
Ilya Rozanov's okay, not good, probably bad day.
Set during a liminal space of my design between the All-Star game and Ilya's father's death.
