Shane put God on a back burner sometime between the ages of eleven and twelve. It was around that time that he barely stepped foot off the ice. His dad would joke that he was born with skates on, while his mother cursed out a grown man for a bad play. God, religion, faith came second to the rush of adrenaline as he flew on the ice. It takes seventeen years and the love of his life being dead for twenty-eight minutes to relearn how to pray. - Or, Shane's game is cancelled and he reads Ilya's would have been last messages in a tiny hotel room with JJ and Hayden at his side.

Hayden cuts himself off at the sound of something he hears so rarely, he’s almost sure he’s imagining it. He scans the room, looking for the source, and sure enough, his eyes land on his target. There, nestled in between two of his teammates on the couch, is Shane Hollander. Laughing. Out loud. Audibly. Like, he’s actually fucking laughing, not the fake laughs he forces out to make other people more comfortable. In fact, he’s laughing so hard, he looks like he might cry, and Hayden would be delighted by the sight of it if he weren’t so fucking concerned. Shane Hollander doesn’t laugh at parties. Shane Hollander barely laughs when he’s actually happy, and he’s never happy at parties. So what gives? Or: Shane Hollander accidentally gets very high. That's it, that's the fic.

"The changing room was muted as the players waited to be told who would be called. It always hurt to lose, but losing against Boston always stung more, and not just for Shane. Hayden came up, half undressed to pat Shane on the shoulder, saying, “We’ll get them next time, man. You did great.” Shane managed a weak smile. Just then, the locker room door opened and a nervous-looking Jordan - the rookie on the Raiders’ team appeared. The ribbing and bickering stilled. “Um- hi guys,” he started. Shane held his breath. “Captain wants…Hollander.” WHAT. The Voyagers’ locker room immediately delved into self-righteous uproar. “That entitled prick!” “Fuck him, man.” “That son-of-a-bitch.” “Like hell he can have our captain. Who the fuck does he think he is?” Set in an AU where Winner's Rooms exist and Ilya picks Shane a few months after snapping at him in Sochi and ignoring his texts. Shane thinks he can ignore the hurt but panicks when Ilya's signature chirping hits a little too close to home.

Shane's breath catches on a sob, and he muffles the sound with his hand. Everything feels like too much. He’s naked, and he can feel entirely too much on his body, inside his body, and he hates how it's starting to feel gross. His head is pounding, and he can't even focus on placating his mind when his lungs are also screaming in his throat for breath. Ilya hears, and his hands reach out to hold Shane, tension lying in every part of his body. “Shane—” “Don't touch me,” Shane snaps, more desperation than yelling as he rips his arm out of Ilyas's grasp. His tears have nowhere to go now, and they finally spill over, hot and humiliating, down his cheeks. Ilya freezes in place, hand hovering mid-air. A myriad of emotions flicker across his face: confusion, hurt, fear. Ilya takes an unconscious step back like someone shoved him. His body curls in on itself, trying to make himself appear smaller. He looks... terrified. Like, Shane just called him a monster, and he believes it. OR: inspired by the fight in the long game when ilya had told shane he could have sex with other men because he did not believe in cheating.

Shane has finally convinced Hayden to invite the Bears (Ilya) to his annual NHL Christmas Party. Obviously, Shane can't really help himself when Rozanov finally shows up. What time do I need to be there? I’m getting there at 8. See you at 9, Hollander. Tonight, Shane–and Ilya, apparently–were attending Hayden’s annual NHL Christmas party. This tradition started a few years back, about two after the rivals’ rookie season. Shane didn’t dare to ask to invite Ilya until recently because it would be risky, and just plain stupid. Well, he would venture to say he didn’t invite Ilya, he just mentioned that Boston would be playing in Montreal and it’d be chivalrous to ask the team to join Hayden at his massive penthouse. However, it wasn’t easy to convince him. Shane recalls Hayden’s intense sigh, which was more of a loud, elongated groan, and a dramatic throwing back of his head. It made Shane wonder if the public would rather watch a Pike versus Rozanov rivalry. Anyway, Hayden begrudgingly agreed and Shane fought back a smile. As 8 o’clock approached, Shane stood in front of his bed with three outfits laid out: a suit, a cashmere sweater and jeans, and a button up and slacks. At first he landed on the suit, slipping into it with ease. When he saw himself in the mirror, though, he could basically hear Ilya’s snobby comments. So fancy, Hollander. He shyly blinked a few times to shoo those thoughts and went back into his bedroom. He opted then for the sweater since he figured it’d be too cold for a short sleeve. As he pulled the sweater over his head he took in a deep inhale, hoping it would look presentable, at least. He examined the fit in the mirror once again, this time a small smile twitching up his lips. Shane eyed himself, loving the way his watch sparkled beside the deep blue sleeve and how his pants fit perfectly. Ilya returned in his mind, this time saying looking good, Hollander. This comment wasn’t sarcastic, it sent shivers down Shane’s neck, all the way to his lower back. The time now was 8:15, so Shane began his drive to Hayden’s. This was a drive he’s done a million times, so why was he so nervous? To distract himself from the anxiety that began to bubble up in his stomach he turned up the radio. It was playing some trashy pop song, and it honestly didn’t help him very much. Parking a few blocks away, Shane took the two minute walk to fix his hair. As his fingers wandered through the strands, he wondered if Ilya was on his way. Though he saw the man a week ago, both on the rink and in his private suite, he was anxious to see him again. Of course, nothing was going to happen, but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy just being in his presence. Yes, Ilya was usually an asshole, and, yes, Ilya loved being an asshole, but Shane knew that wasn’t all he was. Shane reached the front door and could immediately hear music blasting. It was honestly pretty similar to what the radio had been playing. He wished Hayden threw a more festive Christmas party–one with mistletoe and charcuterie boards and vintage music. Instead it felt more like a club. Which, of course, Shane still enjoyed, but he liked slow moments, too. When he stepped inside he was greeted by a very, very drunk Hayden: “Shane! Ugh, you missed it, I, um,” Hayden took a deep breath and tried to figure out what he wanted to say. “Yeah, man, you missed it,” was all he could conjure. Shane shook his head and exhaled a laugh, “Already had a lot to drink?” “No, no, just a few shots.” Shane tilted his head in doubt. “Maybe a few glasses of wine, too,” Hayden smirked, “you want some?” “Uh, no, you have ginger ale?” “God, man, it’s fucking Christmas! Have a drink!” “I’m okay.” Shane shook his head and looked past Hayden. He saw Scott Hunter, still as handsome as he remembered, JJ, and a few other players he recognized by name. No Rozanov. “So, uh, you have some?” “Yeah, man, whatever. It’s in the cooler over there,” Hayden slurred, unimpressed. Shane patted him on the shoulder as he passed by. Under a table covered with drinks, Shane found a few coolers and opened a few before finding one filled with sodas. He reached for the coldest ale there was and grabbed it, quickly pulling back the tab and popping it open. As he took his first sip, he felt something brush against his arm. His eyes followed the sensation and noticed Ilya standing beside him, analyzing the different bottles of vodka laid out on the table. Shane quickly looked forward and cleared his throat, attempting to keep his gaze ahead. In his peripheral, he could see Ilya grazing his index finger over the lids of various drinks, mumbling something under his breath. Finally, he landed on one that satisfied him and poured a hefty amount in his glass. After taking a swig, Ilya turned his body toward Shane and leaned against the table. Shane couldn’t help but admire him. Unlike Shane, Ilya was wearing a loose shirt with the top three buttons undone. His cross laid perfectly underneath his collarbones, and Shane could see his stupid tattoo peaking out. For bottoms, Ilya wore tight fitted black pants and a belt with a chic silver buckle. The way the denim followed the muscles of his thighs made Shane blush. Ilya’s hair was loose golden curls, and it fell on his forehead in a way that complimented him beautifully. Without meaning to, Shane was checking Ilya out. “Like what you see, Hollander?” Ilya said, low enough that only Shane could hear. He quickly shook his head, leading his gaze back to what was in front of him. “Shut up,” he mumbled, taking another sip. Ilya smirked, his mole raising slightly as lips curled up. He hummed in response, scanning Shane in a way that made him take a sharp breath. He felt his whole body heat up as the Russian undressed him with his eyes. Shane quickly sped away from the situation, fearing that it would be too obvious if he stayed. As he walked away, Ilya couldn’t help but stare.

Six months after the Olympic Games, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov haven’t spoken a word to each other...and Shane Hollander is doing a terrible job of pretending he’s fine. With the NHL Awards looming and everything left unsaid hanging between them, one drunken night in Montreal spirals into an unexpected karaoke performance, and everything he’s buried comes spilling out in front of the one person he never stopped thinking about. For Ilya Rozanov, hearing Shane sing might be the moment that finally breaks the stalemate before the NHL Awards bring them back into each other’s orbit. Sometimes it only takes a song, a crowd, and one look across a room to realize that silence was never the same thing as moving on. OR: Between the Olympics and the NHL awards, Shane does drunk karaoke and pours his heart out, and Ilya sees the whole damn thing.

Shane gets drunk and decides to get a tattoo for his boyfriend, his boyfriend likes it. A lot. “This is such a stupid idea, you do realize that?” He did. He really fucking did, but it was also possibly the best idea he’d ever had. Hayden had been trying to talk him out of it for the last hour, since the idea had wiggled its way into Shane’s head - to no avail, obviously. They had gone out drinking, a rare feat for Shane, but it was the end of the season, they had made it to round two of the playoffs before Ilya and the raiders had knocked them out. He was bummed for a couple days, obviously, but they had played a hell of a season, and if Ilya managed to get another cup under his belt with the raiders before he moved to the Centaurs, it would be a good way to go. He would be proud of his boyfriend. The night had started pretty normal, Hayden and J.J. dragged him from his apartment, promising he wouldn’t pay for a single drink tonight (which didn’t really sway him, he was rich for fuck sake), but what did it was the promise to let him drunk ramble about his sexy, wonderful, cup winning (probably) boyfriend. And so he did. He had a couple beers, more than what he’d allow during the season, and talked their ear off. After having nobody to talk to about his gay awakening, and then tying down said gay awakening, it was good to finally have people he could rely on. Someone to sit and listen while he waxed poetic about Ilyas jawline while downing his 5th beer. Beer number 6 had been his tipping point. They had been on their way to their third bar (J.J. said it wasn’t fun unless they bar hopped the whole street) when the neon sign caught Shane’s attention. ‘Sirens Ink’ in bright blue letters ‘walk-ins’ flashing below it. He had never thought about getting a tattoo before, not that he didn’t like them. Ilyas collection had him drooling more than once, but he had never seen himself as the type of person to get something engraved on his body forever. He was too indecisive for that. But this. This was a good middle ground. His friend from high school, one of the few he had kept somewhat in contact with since becoming a household name, had posted an Instagram story about his new tattoo just last week. He had his bottom lip pulled down, revealing ‘YOLO’ in bold black letters. He had been so intrigued that he’d googled ‘inside lip tattoo’ and seen a bunch of people had done it. Most of his research had told him it hurt like hell, but it was funny seeing other peoples reactions, people didn’t often regret them, and if they did it wasn’t a big deal because people couldn’t see it unless they showed it off, the added bonus being it faded quick. At the time he had shrugged it off, and sent his friend a “cool!” DM. But walking past the shop had given him the idea, sure he couldn’t imagine getting something people would see, something people could judge just by glancing at him. But this, this he could hide. He could go about his day with nobody knowing he even had a tattoo. So here they were. Shane sitting in the chair, Hayden pacing back and forth just a few feet to his right, and J.J. attempting to hold his phone steady as the tattoo artist set up his station, Shane holding his bottom lip down for easy access, the stencil already in place. “You’re really going to do this aren’t you?” Hayden asked, stopping his movement and giving Shane a dejected look. Shane just shrugged and sent him the best smile he could with his bottom teeth on full display, ‘ROZANOV’ sitting pretty on his bottom lip. “He is going to lose it!” J.J. called from his other side, Shane wasn’t sure if he was referring to Hayden or Ilya but both was probably right. That had been another hard driving point for Shane, Ilya would lose his mind, he’d take one look at the tattoo and fuck Shane into next week. He was counting on it. The humor left Shane’s body as he heard the first buzz of the machine, sitting straighter and tugging on his lip that much more. “You ready?” The artist asked, a glint of humour in his own eyes. Shane just nodded stiffly and closed his eyes, preparing for the pain. —— It hadn’t taken half as long as Shane was banking on, thank god, but once he was done, the machine finally off, the room was silent. Shane still held his lip down, and looked toward his best friend who just rolled his eyes. He shrugged as if to say ‘well! Hows it look?’ To which Hayden scoffed and gripped his arm that wasn’t stiff, pulling him up and toward a mirror. Shane looked at himself, his eyes slightly glazed, cheeks red, and his lip. It was bleeding slightly around the bold letters, but it looked good. It looked so good. He felt good too, branded in the most secretive way. He felt fucking beautiful, having Ilyas name on him (semi) permanently. He laughed, the giddy sound breaking the tense room, and it put everyone else at ease, J.J. started cackling again, the tattoo artist letting out a breath and chuckling, even Hayden rolled his eyes fondly. This was such a good idea. He wouldn’t see Ilya until they either won the cup or were kicked from the playoffs, so he had to keep it a secret, he wanted to see Ilyas reaction up close and personal. That was fine, he could keep a secret just fine. —— It was another two weeks before he seen Ilya, the raiders had lost in the final round of the playoffs, losing in game four to Florida. It was a good fight, but it just wasn’t looking good from the start, the Raiders were on fucking fire, but Florida had just been better. Ilya was pissed, obviously. Coming that close just to lose always stung, but Shane had something to cheer him up. Shane had been at the cottage for the last week, getting everything ready, buying ingredients for tuna melts, stocking up on ginger ale and cokes, ensuring they had enough fire wood, domestic shit they wouldn’t want to do once Ilya got there. Today was the day, he was finally going to see Ilya again, he was counting down the seconds to hearing the keys at the front door. The tattoo had healed, it didn’t take very long for the swelling to go down, and he found himself staring at it whenever he saw a reflective surface.

Ilya Rozanov hadn’t planned on getting a dog. It was the offseason, his life was already complicated, and the universe — according to his mother — was definitely keeping score. Shane Hollander definitely hadn’t planned on it either. He liked structure. Predictability. Things that didn’t bark, shed, or sprint toward chaos without warning. Or: Hollanov getting a dog!

Eva was Ilya and Shane’s miracle child, born prematurely in the summer of their third season together on the Centaurs. The moment they laid eyes on her in the NICU of The Ottawa Hospital was the moment they both felt their life truly had purpose. Eva was smaller than the other babies but already had a head of soft blonde curls. Her tiny hands would grip Shane’s fingers as Ilya sang Russian lullabies, their favorite pastime, and her big blue eyes would marvel at the world around her. She was kind and sweet and truly an angel, which is what made it so, so terrifying when she told them at 5 years old that she wanted to play hockey like papa and daddy. - A 5+1 of Ilya and Shane’s life as parents, through the lens of their daughter’s experiences with hockey.

“How’d it go?” Hayden asked, grinning sleepily. “You in love?” In such a panic that he didn’t think about the words, Shane replied “Fuck, yes, I think I love him” That certainly got Hayden’s attention. He sat up in bed and looked at Shane in shock. Shane debated turning back around again at the look on Hayden’s face but instead just stood there frozen. With some apprehension Hayden replied with “Okay… do you want to talk about it” Or: Shane accidently comes out to Hayden post tuna melt and it goes from there Shane – November 2016 What is happening? This was bad. This was really fucking bad. Shane’s heart was racing, and it wasn’t from taking the stairs. Every fiber of him wanted to run right back up those stairs and into Ilya’s arms. To wrap himself around him and go to bed with him and wake up with him. And that was why Shane marched straight out of Ilya’s building, and didn’t stop walking until he was safely back in his hotel room. In his panic, he wasn’t careful enough about not waking Hayden. He wasn’t in the room for ten seconds before the bedside lamp was turned on. With some apprehension Hayden replied with “Okay… do you want to talk about it” and then seemed to look at Shane more closely and asked “Hey, are you okay?”. Shane didn’t feel okay; in fact, he felt like he might either throw up or pass out. Slowly, he sank to the floor, back against the door, unable to process everything that had happened that day. He wasn’t sure if he was more surprised about being in love with Ilya or sort of accidentally coming out to Hayden. He was vaguely aware of movement in the room and looked up when Hayden hesitantly touched his shoulder. “Um, hey Shane, don’t freak out, okay? It’s okay, I, we’re cool and we can talk about it if you want or not” Shane thought about it and figured that now that the words were out there, he needed to talk to Hayden – he didn’t want to feel awkward every time he saw him, and his shocked brain had managed not to use Ilya’s name during his confession. “I, sorry to drop that on you I just freaked out. I, um, like guys, obviously…” “You being gay or whatever is fine by me and I won’t tell anyone, I swear” “I don’t think I am exactly, it’s complicated” “Okay, you want to talk about this guy, whoever it is? I can see how it would be difficult” This was not something that Shane was okay to talk about, even without names. “It doesn’t matter, okay? We can’t be together so there’s no point thinking about it” Hayden looked at him with a mixture of sadness and exasperation, “Shane…” Shane was unwilling to have this conversation in case he said something that was incriminating. Hayden seemed to be dealing with the idea that Shane was into guys, but he didn’t think he would handle who exactly Shane was into. “Look it’ s fine, I’m gonna have a shower, and obviously you can’t tell anyone about this” “No, I would never” With that Shane got into the shower and stared at the wall for a long while. Hayden – November 2016 Hayden had thought a lot about what Shane had told him the other night. A few things obviously made sense now – Shane’s unwillingness to date or share anything about his dating life, how closed off he was at times, why he was so secretive about meeting people. Hayden was sympathetic to all of this, but what he couldn’t figure out was what was up between Shane and the guy that Shane clearly had in his life. He’d been sneaking off to meet someone in Boston for a good while – Hayden had only realised the pattern recently, but he wouldn’t know if they were meeting at other times. He couldn’t understand the nature of the relationship either, they’d clearly been hooking up for a while and from what Shane had confessed in his panic the other night his feelings, at least, went deep. So why couldn’t they be together, especially since they’d clearly been successful at hiding whatever relationship they had so far? It didn’t make any sense. What made even less sense was a week later when there started to be press about Shane and Rose Landry. Hayden knew they’d both been at JJ’s party the other week – JJ had come into practice bragging about it the next day. Shane had refused to say anything about it to the guys, claiming that he was just respecting Rose. Hayden didn’t know what to make of it. There’s no way Shane had gotten over his mystery guy in the space of a week; Hayden had seen the look on his face in that hotel room, Shane definitely had deep feelings for the guy. That meant that either Rose was helping Shane cover or he was leading her on, neither of which felt very likely. Hayden had always felt like he knew the man very well and, while he might not have figured out all of the key facts, he knew Shane would never intentionally hurt Rose. Seeing as Shane had known Hayden for 7 years and never mentioned he liked guys, it seemed unlikely he’d told Rose in the week he’d known her, but maybe Shane’s guy was a friend of hers? Mystery guy being an actor would explain why absolute secrecy was needed. Hayden decided not to say anything for now out of respect for Shane’s wishes. Shane – January 2017
