the stupid plan doesn't work anymore by Anonymous
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-02-24
When Shane learns that Ilya's plane has crashed and he doesn't even know who Ilya's emergency contact is or if Ilya's alive, he has a stunning realization that Ilya dying without anyone knowing what they are to one another would be a torment.
Ilya is injured in the plane crash, Shane does a lot of coming out.
“I love you,” says Shane, “I love you so fucking much, Ilya. And when you’re less loopy, I think we need to talk about how the stupid plan doesn’t work anymore.”
Ilya’s mostly out of it by now, but he snorts, “Hollander wants to deviate from plan? Must be very serious for me, yes?”
“You’re going to be fine.” Shane can’t even entertain the possibility of anything else, “Go to sleep.”- Part 1 of love is loud, messy, and complicated

Ilya Rozanov had no idea it was possible to be so unbearably happy in February. It was objectively the worst month of the year between the terrible weather and the exhaustion of the mid-season grind, but as he sat next to his husband on a plane to Columbus in the middle of their two week roadie, he felt almost giddy. They were cuddled together watching the latest Fast and the Furious movie (they were somehow going to space, but also the ocean floor? He had been too busy staring at his husband’s freckles framing his glasses to focus, sue him).

“Why not strip poker?”
Shane blinks. Over the roars of the rest of the table, Ilya has to lean over so that Shane can hear him. His hot breath tickles across Shane’s cheek.
“Hollander? This is okay with you?”
Shane opens his mouth to say no are you all crazy there is no way I could get naked in front of you without you being able to see how desperately I want you, but swallows it down.
“Sure. Yeah, it’s fine. I’m okay.”

How to Build a Legacy by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-02-22
Shane knows the plan to wait to come out until they retire isn't ideal, but he doesn't have a better one. He thinks that he and Ilya can make it work, until his mom points out how long they will have to live their lives in the shadows.
But once he realizes that, he immediately knows that he can't come out. It would ruin his legacy.
He's pretty sure that's why he doesn't want to come out. No other reason. Right?
He is sure that's all it is until Ilya asks him if he would be safe if he came out. And he can't answer.
-------
or Yuna does the math on the retirement plan and when she points this out it opens Shane's eyes.

Forty-eight people boarded the charter flight from Raleigh. Only one woke up in a Savannah hospital.
Ilya Rozanov is the unbreakable Captain of the Ottawa Centaurs. Now, he is also the sole survivor of a tragedy that the NHL would rather treat as a PR nightmare than a massacre. With a shattered body and a ghost team, Ilya finds himself at the center of a corporate conspiracy fueled by blood money.
But he isn't alone. Shane Hollander has always been his greatest rival. Now, he’s his only anchor. Because sometimes, the only way out is through.
Complete!
More Details on the Main Character Death TagHey! The MCD tag is STRICTLY for the death of the Centaurs team, right from the beginning. Neither Ilya nor Shane die at any point in the fic.

Sings the tune without the words by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

“I know, season is over. You probably want to sleep, snuggle your wives and your kids—or boyfriend,” he grins at Troy, “but I need my team for one more night.” He swallows hard. His heart beats harder. He thrums with energy. “I have big life announcement to make, and I don’t want to do it in stinky locker room. So. Everyone come to my house for dinner tomorrow night. Bring partners, children, whatever. We will celebrate our season, and I will tell you my big news."

it isn’t hard to see with eyes closed, the love we made by justhockey

It’s perhaps the sweetest Svetlana has ever known Ilyusha to be. She has always been granted access to the more affectionate side of Ilyusha, the one that he rarely shows to anyone else, but it was never anything compared to this. This tenderness, this adoration, that he gives so freely to Shane. It’s like her best friend is a completely different person right now, and she starts to wonder if maybe she was wrong earlier. Maybe, instead of being too boring for Ilyusha, perhaps Shane Hollander is giving him the space to become something soft. Something without walls, or masks, or armour. (Or, 5 times people doubt their love for each other, and 1 time they are certain of it.)

To be clear, Ilya is grateful the rookies aren’t growing up the way he did in the NHL. Ilya took the hazing to the chin – humiliation rituals, beat downs, grueling practices to prove he could “hang” with the big guns on the team. That being said, there’s still some part of Ilya that balks at the request by the gaggle of rookies to watch The Iron Giant, a veritable children’s movie at the team’s latest movie night. OR: Five times Shane and Ilya were the support system for the Centaur rookies they dreamed of having when they were younger.

the golden age of mosaic broken hearts by writinginasnowglobe

If you ask anyone who knows even the slightest bit about hockey, they would say that Shane Hollander is one of the nicest players out there. A generational talent with talks of a dynasty. If you ask Ilya Rozanov, he’d announce loudly that Shane Hollander is the best thing that happened to him. Don’t get it wrong; he’d still call him boring and polite and “very Canadian” and only the second best hockey player in the league. But there’d be a sparkle in his eye and a soft smile on his lips, and it wouldn’t be hard to see the pure adoration the man had for Shane Hollander. He’d mock him with “golden boy Shane Hollander,” but there’d be a thread of something hidden in his voice. Almost as if he doesn’t truly believe it. Or, Shane Hollander left Montreal. He's not sure if all of him did, though.
