Shane should be here right now, should be in Ilya’s house. Ilya should be teasing him about being picky while going through delivery options for food on his phone. Shane should be discovering that Ilya has ginger ale in the fridge and the protein bars Shane mentioned liking in an interview in his pantry. He should be making out with Shane on the couch, sneaking a hand into his pants, teasing him about whether they can beat the deliveryman and arrive before he does. Shane was supposed to spend the night tonight, the Montreal team not set to leave until tomorrow afternoon because of potential bad weather in the morning. Shane should be fed and showered and ready to curl up in bed with Ilya tonight.
But Shane is in a hospital.

    And Ilya is here.

He pulls up Jane in his phone again. He presses call.

    “Hey, you’ve reached Shane Hollander-”

Ilya closes his eyes and lets Shane’s voice roll over him.

  2. Ilya Rozanov has been saying I love you into the void his whole life.

To his mother’s cold hands at twelve, making promises she can’t hear. To his teammates through fist bumps in tunnel rituals that cost nothing because they ask for nothing. To a sleeping man, in Russian, because his native language is the only container safe enough for what he actually feels. To a country he is slowly losing the ability to love back.

He keeps saying it. No one says it back.

    Until they do.

“That’s not-” Shane starts, but he stops himself. Ilya tilts his head slightly in question, but Shane bites the inside of his cheek and then shakes his head slightly, cheeks flushing. “I do trust you,” Shane says.

“But not with your car?” Ilya asks. “You are afraid I will drive all the boring out of it?”

    Shane rolls his eyes.

“It’s a good car-” He starts in another refrain of one of his favorite summer songs.

Ilya rolls them and pins his boyfriend under him before he has to hear about four wheel drive and gas mileage again.

There are far better uses for Shane’s mouth, after all.

  4. Ilya Rozanov is an incredibly skilled and famous hockey player, maybe the best in the league. He’s known for being captain of the team in Ottawa, for being constantly surrounded by adoring fans, and for being kind of an asshole. Shane Hollander is the founder and director of a charity hockey school in Montreal. He loves his job and takes it very seriously, which leaves little time for socializing or just about anything else. Ilya and Shane cross paths when Ilya’s manager insists on boosting his public image with a little charity work. The two don’t exactly click, yet they can’t stop thinking about each other. Mutual attraction turns into a hook up, and then another, and then suddenly a positive pregnancy test. Shane and Ilya have to figure out how to navigate this complicated situation, and in the process discover the feelings they have for each other are a lot deeper than they thought.

  5. Once they are alone at their stalls, Ilya shoots Shane a sideways glance. “You look like you have… what's the phrase? When your face is natural but mad?”

“Resting bitch face?” Shane hisses through the agony in his jaw.

Ilya chuckles and points a finger right at Shane's nose. “Yes! You looked like you were going to murder poor Haas. And he was so excited to talk to you about boring hockey book,” Ilya explains, clearly delighted as he gets dressed.

  6. “Look, I know I’m boring. And lame and… weird. I just… can you not say it? Every time? Or at least not every ten seconds.” And suddenly Ilya saw the way Shane was trying to fold in on himself. Like he wanted to hide the parts of his life he had just let Ilya see. Now it looked like he regretted letting Ilya in. Or he expected him to laugh. Or leave. He crossed the room. “Shane.” Shane shook his head once. “I’m sorry. Forget it.” “No,” Ilya said gently, crouching in front of him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I was teasing. I didn’t realize.” He paused, then said more firmly, “you’re not boring.” Shane scoffed under his breath. “I mean it,” Ilya said, ducking his head to try to catch his eye. “You’re the most specific person I’ve ever met. It’s fascinating. I love the way your brain works. And the way this house feels like you.” ---------------- A fluffy/smutty one shot set some time between Tampa and Boston in 2017 where Shane invites Ilya to spend the weekend with him in Montreal.

  7. Shane loves his husband. He really does! But sometimes, it can be hard to put that love into words.

So maybe, when he tried to put it into words, he ended up writing a couple songs.

And maybe he released them under a fake name.

And maybe they got insanely popular somehow.

AKA the one where Shane and Ilya are married and in love and Shane is a little insecure about his ability to love his husband. So he becomes a faceless pop sensation. By accident. Mostly? It's complicated.

  8. “I think you don’t hate me as much as you want to. I think you’re curious about me. I think-” Ilya leans in, voice dropping even lower. “I think you watch my highlights. Late at night, when no one is looking.”

Shane Hollander is bred for greatness: son of a future Prime Minister, Canada’s golden boy, first overall pick. Ilya Rozanov is Russia’s answer: the President’s son, cocky and brilliant, everything Shane is supposed to beat.

Their rivalry begins at seventeen with an overtime goal and a blown kiss. It evolves in hotel rooms and stolen hours between games they’re supposed to hate each other through. For seven years, they hide what they are while the world watches them compete, until one catastrophic hit forces Ilya to make an impossible choice in front of twenty thousand people.

What starts as Cold War propaganda becomes something neither of them can control. And when you’re in love with your rival, winning and losing stop meaning what they used to.

  11. NHL golden boy Shane Hollander has spent his entire life being perfect — the ideal captain, the flawless teammate, the face of the franchise. He’s also spent his entire life hiding. When a chance encounter in a New York club leads him to Ilya Rozanov, Shane discovers what it means to finally let go. The problem? Ilya isn’t just confident, wealthy, and dangerously attractive. He’s also the heir to the Russian Bratva’s North American empire. What starts as one reckless weekend becomes something neither of them expected: real, consuming, and worth protecting at any cost — even when that cost includes bodies, lies, and a secret that could destroy everything Shane has built. Twenty-five years, three Stanley Cups, countless threats, and one question: how far will you go for the person who makes you feel like yourself?

  13. It happens against Montreal, because of course it does. Shane Hollander has accumulated hundreds of penalty minutes across his career, same as every other hockey player, but none have ever been from fighting. That is until a bad hit by his former teammates leaves his husband laid out on the ice and a comment that crosses the line has Shane dropping his gloves for the first (and hopefully last) time.

  14. Ilya rounded the desk, and his heart didn’t stutter but simply stopped. For an endless second everything stilled around him. Shane had found them, his letters and his journals. And the world turned sideways slowly slipping away from Ilya’s grasp. Like someone had taken away the solid ground underneath his feet, leaving him falling indefinitely. His entire focus narrowed on the pages Shane was clasping in his hands and the shoe carton next to him.

He had always promised himself that one day he would show Shane, he would tell him about all of it. But he had never wanted it to happen like this. For Shane to just stumble across the pages that carried his darkest thoughts and simple truths of his life. Never wanted him to read those alone or ever. Because Ilya wasn’t sure he was strong enough to revisit all the open wounds he had spilled on those pages.

Or Shane and Ilya spend some time at the cottage between Christmas and New Year’s and unravel their past once and for all.

  15. Still, there’s something that sticks in his chest about all of this, feeling like somehow, he’s failed. Baby should have turned on her own by now. What is he doing wrong? Everything else about the pregnancy so far has been textbook. He’s done everything right- his diet, his exercise routine, prenatal yoga, Lamaze class, protein shakes, oil massages- Seriously, he's done every single thing the pregnancy books advised him to do. He hasn’t missed a single one. Yet, somehow, he’s failed at this. And this is pretty fucking important. If she’s not head down, he can’t safely deliver her. And if he can’t do that- Christ. Shane exhales again, rubbing his hands deliberately over the aching stretch of skin on his belly. He pushes against her stubborn little foot, low on his side. “Why don’t you wanna flip, little girl?” he asks softly, brows furrowed. “I did the stupid elephant walk and I burned moxa at my feet. I’ve done the stretches, I let your dad massage my belly, I’ve tried everything. What am I doing wrong, hm?” -or, shane is 36wks pregnant with their first baby, and she's being stubborn about flipping head down-

  16. For a second Ilya pauses, then he opens the door and steps inside. Yuna is sitting on the hospital bed with her leg wrapped in a cast. Besides her lifted leg, there are no obvious signs indicating anything even happened. They barely look at each other before wheezing laughter echoes throughout the room.

Five times Yuna needs Ilya’s help and one time he needs hers.

  17. Shane groaned, eyes cracking open with great effort, the distant sound of barking getting closer and closer, and he couldn’t help but wince at the volume as it pierced right through him. “Anya.” He managed to get out, and the dog in question nudged at his head, another groan eliciting from Shane’s lips at the movement. He was struggling to understand what was happening, but everything was fuzzy and scrambled and he couldn't hold onto a single thought for long enough to string anything tangible together. “Ilya.” He exhaled as Anya nudged him again. “Get Ilya….Anya, find Ilya.” or Shane slips and falls on ice while out walking Anya, and Anya is just your everyday Lassie.

The cocky curl of his lips was all the confirmation Shane needed. You really did time it, you fucker. Ilya’s decisive goal came two point six seconds before the end of the game. Not accidentally. He did it to spite the Montreal Metros. Shane most of all. It was cruel. Ilya Rozanov, with his Russian pride and mannerisms was cruel. Except for the times when he came to Shane’s hotel room. Or when Shane went to his. It was insane how Ilya always changed behind closed doors. How his smile turned genuine, how the weight of expectations lifted from his shoulders, and only the sweet lust remained, cradling Shane in its attentive arms. Ilya on the ice, wearing the colours of his team, and Ilya in the bedroom, wearing nothing, were two different people. TL;DR: Fuck toxic masculinity, everyone is allowed to cry!
