  1. When the Centaur's plane goes down in early 2021, Shane is left a shell of who he once was. When he dies in an accident months later, he is reunited with his Ilya... in 2008.
This fic is a series of moments as they live through to 2021 again, but they make things a little easier on themselves and for the people around them. The first chapter is Shane's POV, taking place in the early years. Second chapter is Kip's POV as the hockey world shifts around the phenomenon that is Hollanov.

What would have happened if Shane Hollander and Rose Landry really had stayed together? Shane was running from himself and trying to push down his consuming feelings for his rival, Ilya Rozanov. He couldn’t let himself fall in love and would do anything to stop it, even if that meant staying with his beautiful actress girlfriend. He would do anything to keep his secret, despite destroying his relationship with Ilya to do so.

  4. “Rozanov needs a place to stay. His visa won’t allow him to go home to Russia over the break, and we don’t have the cash to put him in a hotel.”

Did the Harvard dorms completely shut down over the winter break? What about the dining hall? Shane supposed he didn’t really know. He’d never stuck around to find out, when he was younger.

    “Okay?”

Coach raised his eyebrows. “So, he’s staying with you.”

    Shane’s eyes went wide.

    “What?”

“Come on, Captain,” Wiebe looked down his nose at Shane. “Try not to look too thrilled.”

  5. Troy made an L-shape with his index finger and thumb, like suddenly he was a movie director and Ilya was his newest muse. “You’re like one of those rom-com heartthrobs. Harris and I watched one the other night, where this campus bad boy is actually a huge nerd. You know, secretly pounding textbooks in the library.”

“Yes, exactly!” Wyatt said. “You’re like the opposite of the girl that takes off her glasses in a movie and everyone realizes she’s hot. You put them on, for that effect.”

Ilya looked mildly offended. “Oh, so you did not think I was hot before?”

    “Eh, on paper, I guess.”

“On paper,” Ilya repeated back, grimacing. “Like taxes? You think I am as interesting as doing your fucking taxes?”

The world goes crazy over Ilya in glasses, and Shane tries to deal.

  6. "You are calling your sister liar?" he asked. "On her recital day? On International Women's Day?" Niko just glared at him, while Max snickered behind the pages of his book. "Everyone has a mad voice," Ilya said wisely, reaching for a fresh bobby pin. He gathered up the loose strand that had slipped free and started over, completely unruffled by the looming deadline. "You get yours from your dad." "I don't have a mad voice." The statement came from the doorway. Shane stood there holding Mila's tiny pink cardigan—the one with the pearl buttons that perfectly matched her leotard—draped over one arm. He was fully dressed now, ready to go. White dress shirt tucked in, navy tie perfectly straight, the silver tie clip Ilya had given him years back catching the morning light streaming through the window. Nobody responded. They all knew better. Or, Ilya and Shane's daughter's first ballet recital happens to fall on International Women's Day. A holiday that Ilya takes very seriously.

“Thank you, Shane. For repairing my car.” Ilya shakes his hand one more time before pulling away. Shane might just be deluding himself once again, but he could feel how Ilya purposely dragged his palm slowly across his, even extending his fingers just so their skin would be touching each other longer; he took his time letting go. It felt way more sensual than it should be. His cheeks were now turning red. “Ah, don't thank me just yet, haha. Still have to actually fix your car later. But you can trust me on taking care of it, I’ll be sure to be very careful!” Shane says enthusiastically. This makes Ilya smirk again. “Hm. Then I will thank you tomorrow again. See you.” Shane Hollander works in an auto repair shop. Ilya Rozanov owns a ton of spare sports cars and has a lot of free time.

  9. Shane knows the plan to wait to come out until they retire isn't ideal, but he doesn't have a better one. He thinks that he and Ilya can make it work, until his mom points out how long they will have to live their lives in the shadows.

But once he realizes that, he immediately knows that he can't come out. It would ruin his legacy.

He's pretty sure that's why he doesn't want to come out. No other reason. Right?

He is sure that's all it is until Ilya asks him if he would be safe if he came out. And he can't answer.

    -------

or Yuna does the math on the retirement plan and when she points this out it opens Shane's eyes.

  10. And then there is Ilya Rozanov after all of them, the cocky eighteen year old smoking in front of a no-smoking sign outside an arena in Saskatchewan. Ilya Rozanov, hockey player, born in Moscow, Russia to Irina Rozanova and Grigori Rozanov (though Shane wouldn’t really know this until much later). June 15, 1991. Shane was born before him so, technically, Rozanov has never known a life without Shane Hollander, which he will definitely lord over him whenever he’d get the chance to. His jersey number is 81. He’s a center like Shane. He’s the captain of the Boston Raiders. He’s a Gemini, though Shane has no idea how that affects him, if it has any bearing on his personality at all. Shane thinks there’s none because Rozanov is an asshole regardless, but all the tabloids insist that there is. He’s six foot three; only an inch taller than Shane. He’s a boy. There’s this thing that he does where he rubs his nose whenever he’s lying. It’s a pretty easy tell, and Rozanov is not a very good liar. He’s a boy, a boy, a boy.

Sometimes, he wishes Rozanov was a girl instead.

  11. “Come on,” Comeau says. “Are we all just supposed to pretend it's normal that you’re still playing house with Ilya Rozanov?”

“Gil—” J.J. says, but Shane doesn’t want him to finish that sentence, to pull Comeau gently off the ledge he’s steering himself toward. Shane wants to push him, kicking and screaming, to make them say it to his fucking face. That after all this time, they still hate him for the heinous crime of falling in love.

“We’ve been married for two years,” Shane says. “I’m not sure that qualifies as playing house. I mean, it’s longer than you were with your first wife, isn’t it?”

Or: Shane reunites with his former teammates at J.J.'s bachelor party. He's finally ready to say (and maybe punch) his piece.

Half-awake, Shane blinks at him sleepily. “What is it?”

    “Mmm.”

  15. "We have newest member of the team with us today, as you all have seen.”

Shane glanced up again, watching as the captain gestured vaguely toward Shane without looking at him. “Shane Hollander.” The name came out of his mouth like it was laced with poison.

Shane became very aware of many eyes turning to him now. He felt a few claps on the back and tried to force a tight smile. But his eyes wandered back up to Ilya Rozanov, who was looking at him with so much quiet contempt, that Shane started to understand the phrase ‘if looks could kill.’

They go no contact for close to a year until Shane is unexpectedly traded to Boston the following season.

Shane finds his new captain is a version of Ilya he's never seen before: dark, icy, and distant.

The Swiss National League doesn’t care about the legendary Hollander-Rozanov rivalry. When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.

Then the lockout ends in January, and it’s time to go back. Back to different countries, cities, lives. Beds.

    Reentry is harder than expected.

  17. Shane Hollander works at a coffee shop, plays hockey, keeps his head down, and doesn’t ask questions he doesn’t need the answers to.

So when a new regular starts showing up—quiet, watchful, Russian-accented, and conducting invitation-only meetings in the back—Shane notices. When that same man takes an unsettling interest in Shane’s closing shifts, his routines, and his safety, Shane does what feels sensible: he adjusts his behavior and keeps his mouth shut.

Ilya Rozanov orders an Americano. He reads, but only in Russian. He worries when people work late alone.

They are operating with very different definitions of danger.

If he didn’t ask questions, he couldn’t be lied to.

    The rules were simple.

    1. Do not ask questions you don’t need the answer to.
    2. Do not share personal information freely.
    3. Do not be alone with Ilya Rozanov.
    4. Do not give him a reason to think you’re afraid.

  18. “If you ever talk about my fiancé like that again, then I will end your career.”

The words are pure vitriol, dripping from Shane’s mouth like venom from the fangs of a snake. He doesn’t raise his voice, he doesn’t even sound angry, he just sounds lethal. Like a man you don’t want to cross. Like a man who fully intends to honour his promise…or threat.

    He’s met with stunned silence.

  19. “Hello, moya lyubov,” he said sweetly. “How is your head?”

There was a pregnant pause where Shane must’ve stood there in shock, his mouth slightly agape as he lost the ability to use any of his bodily functions. Then Ilya moved to pull him into a hug, the physical contact shocking him back to reality. He pushed Ilya away from the door with his good hand, Ilya going along willingly, and closed the door as quietly as he could in his panic.

“Ilya, what are you doing here?” Shane asked, his voice barely contained. “How did you even get this address, did you find it online somehow?”

The softness in Ilya’s face morphed into a wicked grin, which didn’t make Shane feel any better.

“I got address from your mother, silly,” Ilya replied, without a hint of irony or sarcasm.

“My mother. You got. This address. From my mother.”

    ===

A follow-up to "why do you hate him?". Shane doesn't remember much from his time in the hospital, which isn't helped when Ilya decides to surprise him at his parents' home. Shane knows he should be happy but...it's a shock, of course. But the time together allows Shane to learn a lot about Ilya that he'd never had the chance to before.

  20. Shane's eyes burned. "What if I hadn't noticed?" "But you did." "But what if I hadn't?" Ilya pulled Shane against his chest, wrapping his arms around him. "You would have. Because you are Shane Hollander. When Shane Hollander has goal—like goal to keep our baby safe—nothing gets past him." He pressed a kiss to Shane's temple. "Is blessing and curse, yes? But mostly blessing." Or, 3 times Shane's hypervigilance caught something wrong with their kids before anyone else did, and 1 time Ilya had to confiscate his laptop.
