Ilya tries to deal with the fallout when he is left alone, realizing how deep he is falling for Shane. When he makes it to Shane's cottage, nothing will keep him from shedding a tear or two over shopping lists, shared clothing, dental hygiene, and having someone be the one to take care of him again, finally.

  2. He hadn’t meant to look. Honest. He really hadn’t. But Shane was in the shower, and Hayden had picked up what he’d thought was HIS phone. In his defence, the phone in question had been tossed onto the bed closest to the window, which they both knew was always his bed. Both of their phones were the same model, and neither of them had bothered to change the ringtones from the default notification. He’d picked it up without a second thought and, well, had immediately realized his mistake. But it was too late. Hayden had seen the text chain. OR Hayden starts to put the pieces together and figures things out much sooner than expected. He’d met Shane in 2008. It was the International Prospect Cup, and they’d hit it off almost instantly. Hayden had seen his raw talent and knew, even then, that he’d go far. He’d joked around with a very shy eighteen-year-old Hollander, calling him the new Crosby, who had himself once been dubbed the new Gretzky. It was a sort of passing of the generational torch, if you will. And anyone who’d ever watched Shane Hollander play hockey had to admit there was no denying he was their generation's Great One. Of course, some contested that, predicting Russia’s Ilya Rozanov as the next Great One of hockey. But Hayden knew, like the rest of the world should, that the greatest players were always Canadians. It was their sport after all; no stupid, arrogant, pain-in-the-ass Russian asshole was going to take that title. He had been ecstatic to learn they’d been drafted to the same team. Growing up in rural Ontario, Hayden had always had a soft spot for Toronto, but ultimately didn’t care where he got drafted as long as he got drafted. So, learning that a Canadian team had chosen him was an incredible moment. But learning he’d be teammates with none other than Shane Hollander had been surreal. They’d become fast friends. In the beginning, Shane had been fun, and he’d enjoyed going out with the team after games or particularly gruelling practices. Though he rarely drank, he’d still show up and have a good time. It had been on one of those nights out that Hayden had met Jackie. He’d been sipping a beer with Shane, watching Drapeau make a fool of himself on the dancefloor, when two gorgeous girls slid into their booth. A peppy little redhead had plopped herself next to Shane, while her stunning brunette friend dropped in next to Hayden. He’d bought a round for the table, then took his shot with the girl smiling up at him. Shane had been a killer wingman, politely chatting with the other girl as Hayden and Jackie drank their asses off and tore up the dance floor. An exhilarating few months later, they were Mr. and Mrs. Pike, and Hayden could hardly believe his luck. Shane had stood up with him, of course, supporting the relationship everyone else told him he’d rushed into. But Shane could see their connection; he could see how happy Hayden was and how amazing Jackie was and how perfect their life together would be. He understood and supported Hayden. “I just want you to be happy, man,” Shane had said, “if Jackie makes you happy, then fuck what anyone else says. Be happy.” And Hayden was. He had the woman of his dreams and the career of a lifetime. Nothing could touch him. They’d gone from good friends to best friends after that. Shane had been there to help put his new place back together after the housewarming party got a little out of hand. Shane had been there to celebrate the birth of all of Hayden’s kids. Shane had been there to console him when he’d traded in his sweet-ass Hummer for a Dodge Caravan. And Shane had been there countless other times. Hayden had tried to be a good friend in return. He’d repaid the favour when, after Shane bought his first place, some of the guys from the team had shown up to the housewarming with a keg. It had gotten a bit rowdy despite Shane’s best efforts, and Hayden had stuck around till morning to help him clean up the mess. Unsurprisingly, that had been the last time anyone from the team had been invited to Shane’s condo, aside from J.J. and himself. It was why he had jumped at the opportunity to be invited to Shane’s cottage the summer it was completed. He’d packed up the minivan with Jackie and their kids, then driven out to spend Canada Day long weekend at Shane’s ridiculously fancy, custom-built, lakeside cottage. Suffice to say, Hayden and Shane were best friends. Ride or die. A True bromance. Which was why he noticed when things were … off with Shane long before anyone else. It had started with a simple text message. LILY > Come over He hadn’t meant to look. LILY > Come over > will be worthwhile > 2886 Beacon > Text me. I will let you in There was a moment of silence that stretched for several minutes before another series of pings, and Hayden couldn’t help but look down at the phone he’d still been holding. LILY > You are coming, yes? > Do not make me beg > SHAAAAAAAAAANE He’d snorted at the girl’s desperation, but immediately felt bad for looking. Shane was notoriously private and probably would have been pissed if he knew Hayden had seen. Plus, at 10¢ a message, she must really like Shane. Or at the very least, really want Shane. Damn, Hayden was impressed.

  4. Ilya Rozanov has seen the tape on Hollander, seen his blazing speed and his quick hands, his almost psychic ability to know where the puck will be. Hollander is a magician on the ice, the best prospect in the world except for Ilya himself. But up close, Hollander looks young. Soft. Western. He has big eyes and freckles across his nose like a little kid. He is attractive in the way that many young men are attractive, his face not yet hardened by the work of the real world, and he seems nervous to be out here, nervous to be seen with Ilya. Because Ilya has been forced to learn everything about Hollander, Ilya knows that Hollander is older than him, not much, a few weeks. But looking at him, Ilya feels weary and old. He hates that.

  8. A few days before Shane’s seventeenth birthday, he told his parents he’d broken up with Elise. “It just didn’t work out,” Shane said, not really looking at either of them; instead, he was staring at the TV, obviously not really watching the hockey game he’d put on. There was a faint rosy tint to his cheeks. 11. "A game?" said Shane blankly. Ilya waved his arms around as if to communicate through hand gestures. "You know, a sex game. Where we pretend to do something in a sexy way." "You have a... fantasy? Like, you want to act out a scenario?" Shane said hesitantly. Ilya snapped his fingers. "Yes. I have a fantasy." "What's your, um. Fantasy?" Even asking, Shane felt a hot blush rising up his cheeks. Ilya leaned forwards so that his lips were to Shane's ear. "I want you... to be a fan." Shane shuddered at Ilya's breath ghosting across his skin. "A fan?" "Yes, a fan. My biggest fan. And you ask me for an autograph." 13. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to be in Ilya’s proximity—not at all—but rather the opposite. Shane wanted Ilya to take him apart, to hold and caress and touch him—but for Ilya, it appeared to differ. After the awards, after their time spent in his hotel room, it seemed Ilya wanted nothing more than space, kicking him out at the earliest possible opportunity. 'We didn’t even kiss.' The message sat typed out, but not deleted, in their chat, taunting him with the truth of what had happened that night. Ilya hadn’t kissed him, and that affected Shane. It affected him in ways he couldn’t begin to imagine, the constant thought of Ilya, Ilya, Ilya running Olympian laps in his mind. Clearly their… whatever they were, was affecting Shane more than Ilya, and that was an issue. The one person he longed for—when had he started longing for Ilya?— didn’t want him back, and it hurt. Okay, maybe Shane was overreacting, but still. It was going to be a difficult 24 hours, what with his sudden illness and combined heartache. OR After Las Vegas, Shane Hollander falls into subdrop. Ilya is there to pick him back up.

  15. "On the ice, he acted quick. Found the puck fast, moved to the net faster. Years of experience had honed his reflexes into second nature. But here, off the ice, wearing ROZANOV on his back like some doe-eyed puck bunny in the stands, his brain short-circuited completely." Or: Shane accidentally wears Ilya’s shirt into the locker room. “Oh.” Ilya rested his head back on the pillow, looking over at Shane. “So you are the asshole.” A wide smile stayed frozen on Shane’s face. He couldn’t help it. “No, it’s still you.” “No, it’s not me.” Ilya feigned offense, thumb stabbing toward Shane. “You’re the asshole.” He sat up an inch and cupped his hands around his mouth. “Everyone! Shane Hollander is an asshole!” Shane’s grin was starting to hurt his cheeks, his laughter coming easier than it had in months. He gave Ilya a playful shove, sending him tumbling back into the pillows. In an accent that had begun to fade, Ilya added, “I am feeling too good to lose tonight, anyway.” “Oh yeah?” Shane turned onto his side, propped on an elbow. “’Cause I’m feeling pretty good too.” “No shit,” Ilya murmured, sliding a hand beneath the sheets to squeeze Shane’s thigh, spurring an echo of pleasure that still clung to the edges of his mind. Sunlight soaked their bare chests, a rarity when their time together was usually isolated to late nights and unfamiliar hotel rooms. It felt better than Shane was willing to admit. Almost normal. The thought sobered him. In reality, they were both supposed to be on the ice in a few short hours. He grabbed his phone from the nightstand, eyes widening. “Shit, Ilya. We’re late.” Ilya’s eyelids had gone heavy, an arm flung over his face. “Hm?” “I need to get back to my hotel for pickup,” Shane hissed, kicking the sheets aside. Behind him, Ilya groaned, long and dramatic. How he’d earned the captaincy with his complete indifference to punctuality baffled Shane. Then again, no one seemed to mind when he kept dragging Boston to victory night after night. It took effort not to marvel at him in those brief moments from the bench, the way he made it all look effortless. Their clothes lay in a heap by the bedroom door. He hadn’t even folded them. Shane scooped up half the pile and tossed it across the room, a pant leg smacking Ilya in the cheek. “Sorry.” “Liar,” Ilya groaned, expression pinched as he slipped free of the sheets and stretched, arms reaching overhead. Shane was already tugging on his sweats, shirt slung over his arm, when he caught sight of Ilya dangling off the edge of the mattress. Light brown curls stood in every direction, a faint sheen still clung to the dip of his spine, a wrinkle pressed into his skin. For a moment, panic gave way to something softer. There were few things he allowed to disrupt his routine, and Ilya had held the top spot since they were eighteen. Shane crossed the room in a few long strides, leaning in to press a firm kiss to his lips. “See you soon, Rozanov.” Ilya’s hand came up, cupping the back of his neck and pulling him closer, deepening it. "Stop trying to distract me,” he murmured against Ilya’s mouth. “Stop trying to leave,” Ilya countered, fingers twisting into Shane’s hair, tugging lightly. It was almost enough to convince Shane to crawl onto his lap and see how quickly they could fit in round two. Or was it three? Shane bit back a sigh. “Tonight?” Ilya’s jaw ticked. “Tonight.” The distance Shane was forced to put between them had grown harder to bear lately, recent confessions weaving new threads into place. He’d ask him soon, about the cottage. Two uninterrupted weeks, no deadlines, no schedules breathing down their necks. Ilya would probably say no. But what if he didn’t? “Go,” Ilya said at last, breaking the kiss. Part of Shane was grateful, because he wasn’t sure he had the willpower to do it himself. The absence of Ilya’s touch settled in immediately, a dull ache that followed him as he turned for the door. There was a mindset Shane liked to settle into before a game, and he was struggling to reach it. It was clouded, inevitably, by the memory of Ilya’s hands roaming over bare skin, teeth at his neck, the way he’d murmured filthy encouragement as they found their rhythm and slipped into Russian when they lost it. Maybe it was for the best that they didn’t make a habit of afternoon meetings. This was torture. Traffic was thick, and Shane tapped his fingers against the steering wheel, eyes flicking to the clock again and again. Was time moving faster today? By the time he’d parked and sprinted up to his hotel room, there was barely enough time to pull on dress pants and shrug into a high-end suit jacket over a wrinkled shirt. It didn’t quite meet dress code, but he’d rather take the hit for that than further fuel Hayden’s theory that he’d been late because he was with a woman named Lily. A woman Shane had vehemently denied existed. His protests had sounded less convincing lately, and maybe he’d stopped caring if they did. Theriault waited outside the bus, and Shane was already apologizing before the coach could get a word in. “My bad, Coach.” “First for everything I suppose,” Theriault grunted, giving him a look that lingered somewhere between concern and curiosity. Shane was the captain. He was supposed to set

  16. At the penalty box, Shane grinds his jaw so hard his ear starts hurting. Then he remembers that ESPN caught one of his players using a homophobic slur in front of the most famous gay player in the league, flaunting Shane's authority as team captain in the process. His ears are ringing and he feels like a zoo animal, but he catches Scott Hunter’s eye for long enough to say, “I’m sorry,” then averts his eyes. When Hunter says nothing, Shane looks back up long enough to see the guy bracing himself to say something pitying, and Shane would rather die, so he cracks a joke first. “So what d’you think? Most dramatic way to come out in the NHL? Or do you still have me beat?” Hunter snorts so hard he almost overbalances, then looks at Shane like he’s lost his fucking mind. “I think we don’t need to talk.”

"Because it's none of your business? What the fuck?" "Aw, so you don't kiss and tell?" Hayden teased, laughing when Shane's blush deepened. He shoved at his shoulder, trying to wipe the smile from his face. "Relax, dude. I'm only messing with you. You don't have to tell me anything. But, like, we can talk about this shit. Sex, you know.
